Planting a seed requires a plot and a seed.
To collect seeds you can find berries lying around. In one of the starting areas The Meadows you can find light blue and pink berries called Polyberrys. Suck them up with your vacuum harvester and you will acquire the berry and a seed. Now you need to build the plot to plant the seed in.

to go into the build menu, hit 
in Constructs - Essentials and you can find the Small Plot at the top. Place it down and build it using 8 pieces of wood and 12 plant fiber. Once built, hold and select the seed shooter. Aim it at one of the squares on the Small Plot, shoot and it should plant the berry automatically. Pretty straight forward achievement.
Please be aware that there are achievements for planting 100, 500, and 1,000 seeds.
