For the more difficult stages (which for me was everything above stage 2 ), I used the following technique:

1. As soon as the stage starts, quickly stack up a column of garbage at the right edge of your playing field, all the way to the top. That way, it will be the CPU's problem when it becomes part of the CPU's playing field.

2. Play the level as slowly as you can, letting the CPU eventually lose on its own. (Credit due to user vittau on Steam: https://steamcommunity.com/app/851670/discussions/0/17275759...)

3. Try to get rid of at least one square on each pass of the sweep line. In other words, if you don't already have a match waiting to be swept, and the sweep line is about to reach the right edge of the screen and wrap around, you should drop your current block immediately to make a match, rather than waiting and missing the coming sweep.
