Pick VS CPU and play against the computer. You play on split screen and the center line will move left and right as you and your opponent make combos. Make a few combos quickly to push the line over and the computer will go down in short order.
This mode is not easy and you can wind up with a bunch of trash blocks that make it hard to win. This also works against the computer, so a series of lucky blocks for you can mean an easy victory. Use this to your advantage to unlock a few skins for the skin mode achievement since you get one per level you beat. As long as you don't quit out, you can retry the current stage, which can carry you to level 3 or 4, even if you are new to Lumines.
