How to unlock the The Messenger achievement in Mad Max - Definitive Guide
The Collectibles tab accessed from start button will show you the status of all your Archangels. Look for both symbols to be bright to know you have achieved legendary win time.
There are 15 locations for races ( and 16 races) located on the map at the trophy symbol. The course is marked on sand in red, but look for shortcuts. However, make sure you have plenty of boosts to get over dunes quickly when you do take a shortcut. There are 3 race types; Scatter Run; Time Bomb, and Barrel Bash.
Scatter Run – make your own course, be 1st to finish and under required time. For this race type, use a practice race to look for short cuts, ramps, etc. to shave off time. These were easiest in my opinion. Cars in race tend to leave you alone, but will swerve into you if you pass them slow or they catch up to you. Other cars on roadside or coming toward you (not in race) will try to ram you.
Time Bomb – You have a ticking time bomb that explodes if you don’t make it to finish line 1st and in under required time. You MUST use shortcuts, ramps etc. to make it in required time Cars at start will immediately collide with you. Thunderpoon them at start of race. Cars on roadside or coming toward you (not in race) will chase you and try to ram you. This is the most annoying race – make sure you have plenty of thunderpoons and shoot at distance!
Barrel Bash – This is the only one that you have to hit checkpoints (otherwise you fail). Practice course looking for shortcuts. These won’t be huge detours, just cutting a corner or using a small ramp, but you’ll need them to get required time. Mostly stick to course being sure to thunderpoon all of your opponents at start of race. Typically, no one else bothers you, but barrels can spin you out. So hit them as straight on as possible and boost through them if you have one to spare.
*TheStayonTarget has good advice for when you thunderpoon cars at the beginning of the race, "...go for the second car in front of you (3rd from the front). It'll take out that car AND the one closest to you from the starting line."

This trophy requires you to participate in and win, a race at each of the 15 Death Race locations on the map (note that The Reconvene requires 2 Archangel races to be completed) in Legendary time. The required Legendary time for each race is shown on the vehicle selection screen under the Times section and is indicated as the Token time with a Griffa icon. Once you win a race in Legendary time with all 16 Archangel builds, the trophy will unlock.
Since there are multiple achievements related to Archangels and Death Runs, and it can be confusing at first to know what exactly Archangels are and how best to approach all of these achievements, I have decided to keep all the information here rather than having to read multiple achievement solutions to know what to do.
First I will discuss Archangels. What Archangels are is a preset build of your Magnum Opus. In other words, when you build an Archangel, it will change your Magnum Opus to a specific engine, tires, etc. The game claims this is a way for you to switch between types of builds without having to completely customize your vehicle every time. However, you'll find that you don't even really use the preset builds (Archangels) much except for these achievements, and will likely instead just equip the best of what you have in each category.
You'll need to unlock all Archangels to be able to unlock all of these achievements. You'll unlock and build your first Archangel as part of the story. The rest of the Archangels require you to buy specific car parts so they're available to build the Archangel. Often though, car parts needed have some specific criteria to meet before you can buy them, and you'll always be told what you need to do. This will be either completing Wasteland missions, lowering the threat in a specific territory, obtaining the color by defeating a specific Top Dog, or collecting the car body from a specific scavenging location. These are all straightforward to do. Just look on your map and do whatever is required, knowing that you may need to progress farther in the story if you don't have the needed Wasteland mission available yet.
There is one car part that is unique from the rest and a pain to find: the Slick Rubs tires. They're needed for two Archangel builds, and it tells you to use the hint on the history relic from Pink Eye. This is not helpful at all. On top of that, the tires are not marked as a collectible at a scavenging location, they don't show up on your map, they don't show up on your minimap, and they don't even have an identifying mark when you're looking straight at them, aside from the slight sheen that all lootable objects have. The image below shows where the location is. Note that, while they are in a scavenging location that is marked on your map, they aren't part of completing the location. If you complete the location without collecting the tires, the location won't be marked on your map anymore, but you can still return there to get the tires. Go down the stairs into the underground area where the loot is, and the pile of tires is at the base of the stairs.
Now on to Death Runs. There are 15 different Death Runs (in general, one per region) across the map. Each is a race, and it will be one of three different types:
- Time Bomb - get to the finish line using any route, and meanwhile all other cars are trying to destroy you.
- Scatter Run - get to the finish line using any route you want, competing against other cars.
- Barrel Bash - get to the finish line by following the red streaks on the ground, which lead to barrel checkpoints. At each checkpoint, you need to crash through at least one red barrel for it to count. Missing a checkpoint results in an automatic fail when you reach the finish line.
The first time you complete each type of Death Run, you'll unlock an associated achievement. A couple tips to make things easier:
- If you screw up and want to restart a race, hold to leave your vehicle. This automatically fails and lets you restart.
- Wait until you have a mostly upgraded Thunderpoon before attempting these.
- Right when the race starts, immediately shoot at a car with the Thunderpoon. This will blow it up and often a second car too. Proceed to destroy the other cars right afterwards. Having no competitors makes it that much easier to finish the race quickly. Also, destroying competitors at the start of each race with each Archangel is the most surefire way to unlock "The Exiled."
- Also right after the race starts, pull up your map, find the finish line on your map, and set your waypoint on it so the line on your minimap takes you on the fastest route to the finish.
- In general, stay on the track and follow the roads, no matter which race type you're playing. You'll virtually always get off track or slow down if you decide to drive off road. Follow the line on your minimap as mentioned previously.
Lastly is how to organize these races to do them efficiently. You actually don't need to worry much about this, because each Death Race only lets you play as a specific Archangel; you don't have your choice of any Archangel for every race. Even so, for completeness sake, here is the list (in no particular order) of which Archangels are used for which race. Note that I used the region name rather than the race name, because if I say 'Tricky Pass' then you might end up scrolling around the map trying to figure out which region that's in.
- The Heights - Speed Demon
- Wailing Winds - Rule of War, Speed Freak
- Rot N Rusties - Jugger of Virtue
- Colossus - Kill Box
- Fuel Veins - Soul Sweeper
- Blackmaws - The Jack
- Dry Gustie - Pinky Finger
- Fuel Veins - Celestial Bones
- Grit Canyons - Argent Cavalier
- Parch Moon - Righteous Spike
- Chalkies - Aurelian The Ready
- Reek Hills - Cardinal Grinder
- Cadavanaugh - Sanguine Guardian
- Knit Sack - Radiant Shadow
- Grandrise - Lord Gravel
The Death Race in Wailing Winds must be completed twice: once as Rule of War and once as Speed Freak. That's why both are listed there. Also, there are two Death Race locations in Fuel Veins, which is why it's listed twice.
There is no need to keep track of which races you've completed and which Archangels you've used and done in legendary time. A completed Death Race location has a little yellow gas pump sign next to it. Also, when you go to your vehicle collection (either in the pause menu or in a stronghold) you can view your Archangels. Each one has two symbols below it: one with a trophy and one with the Griffa token symbol. If you've completed a Death Race in legendary time with that Archangel, both symbols will be filled in yellow.
At the same time, get all the trophies related to the races.
There are 15 Death Races in total, and 16 Archangels. (You will complete 1 race with 2 different Archangels).
