How to unlock the Jerry Rice Award achievement in Madden NFL 13 - Definitive Guide

Just a note to start, this guide is not for getting the Peak Performance achievement (99 overall) and when I got the Jerry Rice Award I was still in the 80s overall. The RB methods out there for Peak Performance are much easier imo, and you don't need to have good stats to dominate as a WR anyway. So on to the guide.

Make a possession receiver and make him a high draft pick and an instant starter on the Packers. I made my guy 6'8" as in Markyshizzle's guide, and started with high jumping/catching/catch in traffic ratings. It made me the #2 WR. I would suggest turning off trades, though I don't know if the computer will trade you or not. I would also turn off the fire coach option. Set the difficulty to All-Madden, and go into League Sliders and turn all the Player Skill sliders up to 100 and the CPU Skill sliders down to 0. Also turn Fatigue and Injuries down to 0, and I like to turn Holding to 0 as well so you don't get plays called back because of stupid holding calls.

Now you're ready to begin. Your goal for the first two seasons is to get as many yards and touchdowns as possible. In the GB playbook is a formation called Strong Close. There are 3 money plays in here and they are all you will need for your entire career. The first two (FL Drive and Y Trail) are for gaining huge yards and the third (WR Out) is for when you are down close to the goal line. You can actually run pretty much whatever route you want and then call for the ball by pressing A so the goal here is to basically run a deep corner to the sideline on almost every play. You can also mix it up by running a straight streak, or a deep post. More explanation below.

The Strong Close formation will have you lined up close to the linemen. This is important as it gives you more room to maneuver past the secondary, and also because you're never off the screen, which made it easier for me to run routes because I could see where I was going at all times. Pick one of the two plays mentioned above and snap the ball. What I did most of the time was run about 10 yards up the field then briefly fake like I was going to cut inside but then cut back out at an angle toward the sideline deep and press A. Then you have to go get the ball and hit Y to catch it. The receiver will not auto catch the ball for you. It will take some experimenting with the best ways to fool the DB, but generally it's best to go to the outside as it keeps you away from the safety.

One thing I also found is that audibling to "Deep Pass," which is actually play #1 (FL Drive) above, even if you had already picked that play, will often cause the defenders to creep up toward the line, making it very easy to blow right past them for a big gain. Once inside the 10 yard line, pick the WR Out play (which incidentally is the Quick Pass audible) and basically run the route on the play, pressing A as soon as you make your cut to the outside and catching it in the end zone by the left sideline.

During these first two seasons when you are racking up as many yards/TDs as possible, I would recommend purchasing the Feet In Bounds trait early on as it will help you have more complete passes when Rodgers throws too close to the sideline. I would also recommend raising your Catching and Catch in Traffic ratings to 99, and then work on Speed. I wouldn't worry about the development trait because with that extra 100k you can already have higher ratings, and as stated before, your ratings really aren't that important to this achievement anyway, but they do make things a little bit easier.

Note: Do not play the offseason games as the stats from those games do not count toward your career stats. Just sim them and make sure you win every playoff game because you need to win the SuperBowl every year for the legacy boost. I only had to win 3 SuperBowls to get the achievement. Save before simming each playoff game and if you lose just reload your save and try again.

After two seasons (I averaged 7500+ yards and 100+ TDs the first two years), change gears and start concentrating on getting catches. Don't worry about yards or TDs anymore. I had about 500 catches starting the 3rd season. Use the same two plays you've been using all along only flip them with RT and run the short drag/slant route. Stay in front of the linebackers and just catch short pass after short pass, letting yourself get tackled, and holding Y after every play to hurry up to the line and do it again.

Using this method I was able to get 40-50 catches a game. Again, don't worry about yards at this point, even though you haven't passed Jerry Rice's yards totals yet. They will come by the time you catch 1,000 more passes. Also, when you get down close to the goalline you can still use your trusty WR Out play for the touchdown. 9-10 games into the 4th season I passed Jerry's receptions record, which left me about 500 legacy short of 20,000. I then simmed to the end of the season, and the season awards such as MVP, best WR, etc. put me over and bloop!

To summarize, the stats that will get you the achievement are:
1549 receptions
22895 yards
197 TDs
3 SuperBowl wins
4 MVPs

This is a very time consuming and repetitive achievement, but with perseverance you can finish it and be that much closer to 1000. Another note is that at this point if you still haven't gotten the Hall of Famer achievement, you can retire and that achievement should pop as well.

Make a possession receiver and start him on the Bears. This will make you start as a #2 receiver and have an 82 overall. I made my receiver 6'8 but you can prob make him 7'0 to make him truly unstoppable.

NOTE- Turn of fire coach option, if you coach is fired, your stats drop dramatically.

Each season play 4-5 games and run up the stats as high as possible. Lead the league each year receiving yards, tds, and catches. You may sim to the end but make sure you save around week 14 and see if you get the end of season rewards that you want to build your legacy.

You should get
OROY - Rookie of the year (first year only)
Offensive player of the year
MVP of the league
many other milestones

If you don't get the milestones above, reload your save and play more games to boost stats.

After you get the following rewards, sim your way game to game and win the superbowl, saving after each playoff game and reloading if you don't win.

Note- I play on all-pro and spent my first 100k xp in the developmental trait. I plan on using this player to get my 99 hopefully

This is a long grind as I am nearly done with my 4th year and have won all superbowls, and 2/3 mvp. I am currently at about 7k legacy. To pass Jerry Rice it takes 20k legacy.

I hope my tips help you , please feel free to leave feedback if you want to help with the solution

Note - Got this achievement 8 seasons in, winning the superbowl and mvp 7 seasons, breaking all records minus the reception record ( was 300 away)

well it takes some skill to be good at the game, i dont use 1 play, as a receiver you run whatever route you want and call for the ball. The height just helps you highpoint and catch the ball

I know that it takes skill, but for the Dan Marino achievement there's a solution to use only one play, so after a while you know exactly what to do in each situation. You prefered shotgun passes, quick passes or even PA-passes? What's better, starting right next to the O-Line or beside the sidelines?

you cant pick your play really, i only ever audible to "quick pass or PA" I have almost 4 seasons in and have never gone to my playbook.

Is there a way that you start with an higher overall rating as a WR for a specific team? Like you can be drafted by the Jets as Power Running Back and start with an overall rating of 90

not sure, you need to join a team that is looking for that specific position. for instance STL needs a pocket quarterback.

Did you adjust the sliders? I dont know if it changes the amount of legacy points you earn. I played one game on All-Pro as WR and broke the records for REC, TD and Yards in a game and got away with 190 legace points. I know it is much for one game, but with 3 recordsit seems like nothing..

after 4 seasons you said you were at 7k legacy and you got this achievement at your 8th season. So in seasons 5-8 you got 13k legacy? So how much legacy does breaking career records get you? Because in the QB career I just finished I was only getting 500 legacy when I broke career records. It seems (from how much legacy you obtained in seasons 5-8) that the WR career gives you a whole lot more legacy for breaking career records. Unless you were playing more than 4-6 games a season?

I am only asking because I am on pace for around 7k legacy after 4 seasons. And after the 5th season you don't get end of season awards anymore (cept for pro bowl). So this will take way longer then the QB career. Something like 12+ seasons.

After breaking all records minus the reception record, i was about 500 short, i started the next season and played 2 more games and got my 500 after beating some season goals. You get a big chunk for winning the 5th pro bowl, 5th mvp, and 5th superbowl

cool thanks for the response. I am in my 5th season right now. Let me finish it out and see what I get. Because the first 4 super bowls i was only getting around 300 legacy for each super bowl

Playing on all madden and getting at least 3 touchdowns and 300 yds a game I am only getting like 100 legacy points a game. Does that sound right? I'm on week 16 of my 3rd season with 3,503 points.

Also, if you are a speed receiver make sure you put yourself on a team with a great return man. It sucks having to do that every game.

okay these are my stats after playing 42/57 games including playoffs not including preseason
receptions 1,120
receiving yards 30,000
receiving tds 396
punt returns td 9
kick off return tds 2
mvp 3
opoy 3
superbowl 3
i have destroyed every record except the receptions. the thing i dont understand is that i have all that and only have 18,000 legend points like this is absurd but whatever i will have this achievement tomorrow by the end of my 4th season and only playing 3 1/2 seasons

you need to break the catch record to put you over...

ps, if you played playoff games instead of simming them then you wasted alot of precious time

The only thing that matters is the awards and leading the league, as well as records, you cant get any of those in the playoffs

i didnt end up having to get the record for catches and i simmed the playoffs i got it this morning my stats were more then double rices in receiving tds and receiving yard buy not its on the joe montana

Play on all madden!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I simmed almost the entire first season so really being in my 5th season I
'm only in my 4th season of actually playing the games.

PLUS if you break single game records over and over again you get big boosts all throughout the season. I think the initial record is 336 for yards, so I went just over to like 350, then the next game i hit like 365, then 380, and so on. It's really hard to break the record over and over again once you put up 600 the first game. You'll have a hard time beating that more than a couple times in a career if any.

True that playoff games don't matter but you want to win every superbowl and all of the individual awards every year for the fastest results.

Just a note i would like to add on this!..Go for 200 receiving yards a game 3 receiving td's and 20 receptions(catches) a game. The play i used to do this was on bears playbook Gun split offset go up and click X Slants middle. Basically do the exact route unless double covered then do a slant cutback route. i get about 30 catches a game with well over 400 yards. On all madden difficulty after first season i played about 5 games and got 2746 hall of fame points. Ill keep this updated to see how many seasons it takes for me at this rate.

A certain play you have chosen most of the time to rack up your stats would be cool. Alright, no one before you suggest to use big guys as your player in their guides (nomather what position your playing), but all other things in your guide are made clear in every other guide before this one! I dont want to be offensive, just begging you to tell us more about your way to the top :)

just wondering out of curiousity does the difficulty effect your legacy earned because i suck at running my routes and what not in madden so on the all pro and all madden difficulties i drop almost every pass that gets thrown my way

Been playing a lot of my online coach career but here's what I've come up with:

Single game records- shattered them over and over
Season records- broke them all every year beating my own scores
Career records- finished Tds, almost have yards, not close to catches
oPOY all years
MVP twice
4 superbowls

At the end of my 5th year on All Madden before the Super Bowl I have 14,000. Boom.

Got it in Week 16 of 2017 season, you need to basically win all Super Bowls, get all of the awards you can (MVP, OPOY, League Leader, OROY, etc) and break all the records as a receiver (yards, touchdowns, and you'll get it just short of the catches record). I ended up simulating the last 2017 season because I was only ~800 points short of 20k legacy, and it was faster. If you play only a few games and simulate the rest it will take you a lot longer in terms of seasons to break the records for yardage and catches.

The only setting I modified was the difficulty (upgraded to All-Pro and left it), and coach firing to off.

My end stats were:
Legacy: 20459
Catches: 1505
Yards: 29,982
Touchdowns: 342

5x Super Bowls
5x MVP
5x League Leader
5x OPOY

Start a new Connected Career as a Balanced Wide Receiver High Draft Pick for the Green Bay Packers. You can join any team you wish, but the Packers have a quarterback in Aaron Rodgers and defensive stars that are young and will be around for many years.

Before starting your new Connected Career league, change difficulty to All-Madden (can leave it on Pro). Set all User sliders to 100, CPU sliders to 0, and all Penalties to 0. Leave rest of the settings at default.

This will take between 7-10 seasons to unlock. Make sure in the first five seasons to win the MVP award and Super Bowl each year. After 5 years, you no longer get legacy points for them. Though, every year you still get legacy points for reaching season milestones in 1200 yards receiving and 20 receiving touchdowns. You will be required to return punts and kickoffs. Trophy unlocks when you surpass Jerry Rice's legacy score of 20,000.

Each Season do the following:
  • Sim all Preseason games.
  • Play the first 5 games to earn at least 4,000-5,000 yards receiving.
  • Play the first five games to earn at least 50-60 receiving touchdowns
  • Play the first five games to earn at least 250 catches
  • Sim remaining games
  • Reach the playoffs
  • First 5 seasons win the Superbowl and MVP
  • Simulate the offseason
It is important to break the Jerry Rice's all-time records in Yards Receiving, Receiving Touchdowns, and Catches. Breaking all three records can net you close to 9,000 legacy points. Thanks to killingjoke87 for the tip.

They key is to find a passing play you are comfortable with and run that same play over and over. A good slant passing play works best. After each play that is successful, quickly double tap to run the hurry up offense to run the same play again as using the hurry up offense gives you more possessions. Beware even on All-Madden with sliders in your favor, the defense can still swat balls away from you.
