How to unlock the BOOM achievement in Madden NFL 17 - Definitive Guide

I don't know if anybody else had issues with the slant strategy, but I did. I kept missing the tackle and the other controller would autocontrol 20 yards down field before I stopped them. Didn't get a single battle.

I used running strategy instead. Start the game on Pro for each, 15 minutes and make sure you change the game speed to very slow. (Makes getting the hit a bit more forgiving.) Had the second controller team run a power O and used a defensive player that was offsides behind the o-line to get an immediate hit. (Make sure you leave enough time before the hit for the HB to get the ball though. Ended up getting a battle probably one out of every 3 tries and the best part was that you have tons of opportunities. Just keep accepting the penalty for offsides. Eventually you'll be on the 1 and if they score a TD you can just accept and try again. No punting, nothing.

Took me about 5 minutes total to finish. I used the Cowboys and Pats and controlled Church on the Cowboys to get.

Took a few tries to prefect the timing but the plays you select aren't all that important. I did it with Half Back Dive and a generic 4-3 man zone coverage play. The trick is to have your defender in the backfield, behind the tackle and between the RB and O-Line, any closer and you'll tackle the QB instead. Once you perfect this it's just a matter of time before you get a battle.

Spent over 2 hours on soul popped's solution with no achievement. Spent 5 minutes on Flatline1775's and got it. Thanks.

This worked!!! I wasn't getting the battles that frequently, and sometimes another defender stopped the battle, but eventually got 3 done in about 15 minutes. I think you have better odds the further you are from the goal line, since once you're at the 1, the other defenders tend to crowd the line and join in and tackle the HB.

Hey Gunstar were you running goal line defense? If I recall correctly I was running a Tampa Zone so it was only rushing like 4 people. I'll see if I can replicate the issue and update the solution.

took me a few minutes to figure out where to position my tackler, but worked fine after that. got a tackle battle 1 out of 5-6 runs. I always used 4-3 man coverages on defense, did not have any defender interfer whatsoever.

Uh!
Not sure i understand... do you mean you placed yout defender between the O-line and the RB? Like near the QB?

This is the most horseshit achievement I've ever worked on. I played an entire 60 minute game with no accelerated clock and other than the 2 tackle battles I won, the button prompt would pop up for a split second giving you no where near enough time to react at it. Not saying your solution isn't correct by any means, but this achievement is just trash.

Did you try my strategy? Because there is effectively no clock since there is a defensive penalty on every play and the game can't end on a defensive penalty. I think the achievement was trash without abusing the game like I did though.

The issue I’m having is guessing which button the tackle battle is going to be. I always hit the wrong button. laugh

I can't +1 because I did this on PS4, but this worked like a charm.
One minor quibble - I found my defensive line was breaking through a little too aggressively and a few of the tackle battles were broken up by an AI defender. I used Prevent defence for the last few attempts. Either way, this worked really well: Got it in after six or seven tries and was getting a battle to prompt every three or four tries.

What finally worked for me was two-controller play in couch co-op with15 minute quarters. I played man defense in a QB contain play. I set the offense to an outside quick pitch. which made me a lot of times in the open field OLB to RB in the flats. I also played Steelers Vs Steelers and toggle the even teams toggle while setting up the game. I think those last too things was crucial in getting the tackle battle to trigger way more often.

Yeah, if I remember right (I did this a while ago.) you position your defender on the side the power-O is running to just behind the O-Line. But, yes, you are between the O-line and the RB. Kind of offset near the QB. You might need to adjust your placement for the first few plays, but since the play results in a defensive penalty you can just keep trying until you get it.

I found it worked better with the Pats using HB Dive and Cowboys running man on man coverage. Took about 20 tries but got the achievement within the first drive. Thank you so much!!!

The video below and guide are not mine; all credit go to M-Easy on YouTube.

Moving the TL;DR to the top:

(1) Get two controllers.
(2) Download a 99 overall roster and use that for both teams.
(3) All-Madden difficulty, 15 minute quarters, no accelerated clock.
(4) Primary controller on defense: FG Block.
(5) Secondary controller on offense: Shotgun, Quick Slants
(6) Primary controller controls MLB. Move him back and over a few yards, toward the WR.
(7) Secondary controller throws to outside WR.
(8) Primary controller attempts tackle, hopefully wins battle.
(9) Lather, rinse, repeat.

Full Solution

Considering 32% of players have this achievement, it's maddeningly (no pun intended) difficult to get if you're actively trying for it. M-Easy's solution below worked well for me, and I was able to get it in ~15 minutes.

You're going to need two controllers. Download the BILLZ99 roster (or any other roster you can find where every player is a 99 ... most likely the one you used to get the legacy achievements), and have both of your controllers play as that team against each other.

All-Madden difficulty, 15 minute quarters, no accelerated clock.

Your primary controller/account will be on defense. Choose any Field Goal Block play, and control the MLB (the guy NOT on the line of scrimmage), and move him back about 10 yards and 5 yards to the left.

Your secondary controller/account will be on offense. Go into Shotgun formation, and call Quick Slants. Snap the ball, wait about half a second (for the WR to actually start his slant), then throw a bullet pass (hold down the button) to the WR on the most left side of the screen (in my case, it was the cn_X receiver).

As soon as you throw the pass with your secondary controller, use your primary controller to line up and try to tackle the player. You won't get a tackle battle every time, but I got one per minute of game-time (I unlocked after 6 tries with 9 minutes to play in the first quarter).

When the tackle battle starts, repeatedly mash the button that shows above your player's head; if you make the tackle, that's a "win." If the WR breaks free, you lost, and it doesn't count.

After each play, hold down cn_Y on the secondary controller to hurry up and call the same play again without having to go to the play select screen. More attempts in less time!

If your primary account causes a turnover or your secondary account scores, just punt the ball back to your secondary controller and get back on defense.

The achievement will pop as soon as you've won your third battle; no need to wait until the end of the game.

Does this have to be done on All-Madden. The buttons pop up so fast on mine I can never win the battle. Do you have any other suggestions that could help.

I've done at least 6 clean and timely tackles, but achievement did not unlock. Any ideas why?

I played on all madden, vikings99 roster, 10mins clock.

Lower difficulty on the tackling team down so you can win the battles easier. Pro is fine. I put pro on both was definitely easier than all madden.

This is the perfect setup. But it it so much easier just to control the other controller and LOSE the battles. I did it on 2 profiles this way in less than a quarter each, after failing many times the other way.

Just a quick tip: I did what soul popped wrote except with a slight difference: instead of leaving both controllers at pro, change the second controller (opponent) to All-Madden difficulty. That way it makes it more difficult for them to barrel through u therefore creating more tackle battles. I was able to win 3 easily with the offense on quick slants and the defense on load block right. Also, don't be the middle line backer until the catch is made on the offense because when you switch players it initiates contact.

Tackle battles are a new feature in this year's game. You can learn about them in the skills trainer. Essentially, tackle battles are single button mini-game prompts that appear over the tackler and runner’s head at the moment of impact, whoever presses the button first or the fastest wins. On offense you break the tackle; on defense you punish the ball carrier. Unfortunately, there is no explanation for what triggers tackle battles vs. regular tackles. The good news is they occur multiple times every game.

This trophy proved difficult to unlock vs. the CPU. I developed a strategy to easily obtain it using 2 controllers or playing online vs. a friend. First, download and load my rosters. Now play a mirror game with the 49ers vs. the 49ers. I assumed having players with similar strength ratings would improve the chances of tackle battles triggering; and I was correct.

For the offense, choose a shotgun formation and pick a Slants play. For the defense, choose a field goal block like Load Block Left or Right. On offense, get ready to throw a quick slant to an outside receiver. On defense control the middle linebacker (Bowman), before the snap back up with Bowman. Now snap the ball and throw a quick slant to an outside receiver. Now you will have a one on one tackle opportunity with Bowman and the receiver. It seemed like 1 in 3 or 4 tackle attempts would end up in a tackle battle. Use a no huddle offense to keep it going. Now simply win with the defensive player 3 times to unlock this trophy. This process goes fairly fast.

This one can be a bit of a head scratcher, as you will think you get it...but nothing pops. Keep plugging away. It's finicky, but you'll probably have to specifically go for it as it didn't come natural in ANY of the games I played. I wouldn't recommend the Gauntlet Cheese roster for this, as the player skills need to be fairly equal.

(9) Keep going until you get it
