From all my play time this is literally all that matters for overall, nothing else impacts it but the overall numbers of the guys at these positions.
Since you can have two receivers and two corners, naturally drafting them earlier leaves you with the option to draft a second later on, should you get stuck with a dud round.
+1
Currently the closest I've gotten to completing this achievement was an OVR rated team of 81. It was made up of no duplicate Gold player positions, 9 Elite players (QB, LT, LG, TE, WR1, WR2, FS, SS, MLB) and before I picked my last elite card the WR2 I was already at 81 OVR.
So just keep at it as often as you can (20-30 minute wait timer) and good luck to you because you're really going to need it.
One thing of note that helped me that no one seems to have talked about...
In the early rounds, I highly recommend focusing on players that you don't expect to see at the same position again. Of course, look at your OVR change with all three players and if one moves it up, choose that guy. But I found that in several rounds, I had at least two players who would move me up.
My point is that it seems like you will only have 1 LG or RT (or any other lineman) show up throughout the draft who will be a superstar. Choose that guy. Positions like QB, HB, MLB, WR seem to show up a lot. If you have a choice in the first 7 rounds or so, take the O lineman, FS, SS, or D lineman. In my case I had a 91 OVR QB show up in the first round, but I passed on him and was able to get an 89 QB in the 10th round. This strategy seemed to help me, so just wanted to pass it on to the community.
Last point, my coach put my at a 73 OVR right off the bat. I have seen some comments stating that this essentially glitches the draft and you will be unable to get an 83 OVR or higher. That is completely FALSE. Again I went from 73 OVR start to 84 OVR at the end. A ton of luck in there, but you can help yourself out with a good draft strategy. Keep trying, you'll get it eventually. Good luck!
This is the the team that I drafted to finally get the achievement:
Offense:
QB: J.Elway (91, Elite Legend)
RB: E.Smith (91, Elite Legend)
WR: G.Tate III (82, Gold)
TE: D.Walker (84, Gold)
LT: A.Munoz (90, Elite Legend)
LG: M.Iupati (85, Elite)
RG: K.Long (85, Elite)
RT: R.Schraeder (85, Elite)
Defense:
RE: E.Ansah (87, Elite Friday Night Player)
DT: F.Cox (85, Elite)
ROLB: D.Hightower (87, Elite)
MLB: D.Johnson (85, Elite)
LOLB: W.Mercilus (82, Gold)
CB: S.Smith (85, Elite)
SS: C.Pryor III (85, Elite)
After only get five 82 teams in total, last night they had a special Friday Night Draft Champions Event. After about 5-6 hours of drafting and getting six 82 times, I got the 83 on my last attempt of the night. This is just 100% pure luck to get, as we all know by now.
Getting the achievement on this Friday night event is probably the best chance to try and get it, without waiting months later for better cards to be added. The event has two guaranteed legends rounds and exclusive players. The event starts at 5 PM EST and goes through Saturday at 10:30 AM EST. I am assuming this event will take place every Friday night, but I can not find confirmation of this.
EDIT: The draft nights have now been moved to Tuesday Night. Not sure if they could be moved again in the future.
The hardest achievement in the game! Luckily, there is a trick! As of this writing, they have a special draft event on Tuesdays. It used to be Fridays... so make sure you aware of what day they have the event when you have the game. Don't bother going for this on any other day. It's a waste of time.
On the special event days, you get BONUS legendary or elite players. The options to choose from are simply way better. I must have done 40 drafts with no luck. Then on the special event Tuesday, I got it on my second draft.
In addition to the special day:
Know the basic roster layout. Pick only one player from each position, other than:
CB
WR
DT
Those positions can have two guys, but drafting two top level QB or RB is not going to help you at all. Some people are saying TE and FB for example don't help you, but they do. Every position helps you, with at least ONE guy picked. Drafting two FS or SS though, isn't wise.
UNOBTAINABLE DUE TO SERVER CLOSURE
This is the trophy that will more than likely delay you from obtaining your platinum and increase your time to platinum tenfold. The thing about it, is it's not a difficult trophy - just mostly luck based. You can have a perfect drafting strategy but if your pulls are bad, then you're stuffed.
As I explain in the video, sometimes the game will only give you low end gold cards to choose from. Even worse, sometimes the game will keep giving you elite cards but only from the same positions repeatedly.
The good news is you have an unlimited amount of attempts to try for this trophy. If you fail to draft an 83 OVR team, then simply quit out of your first game and try again, but note that you will not be able to re-draft for 20 minutes from the start of your previous draft. So essentially, its only about a 15 minute wait.
This trophy gets easier as the NFL season goes along. As the season progresses MUT introduces new players and legends weekly, and these players and legends overall rating increase weekly as well.
The best strategy I can give is this:
Try to choose a good coach. I know most times you won’t get that chance, it’s not necessary but it helps a bit if you do. Most coaches with West Coast and Single Running Back styles start at 73, while most other coaches start at 72 but this varies as well so experiment.
As for players, NEVER draft a Fullback. That position does not affect your overall rating. Next tip is not to draft the same position twice unless it’s cornerbacks (up to twice) or Wide Receivers (Up to 3 times). Your starting roster has 22 spots but you only have 15 rounds to draft players so no matter what, seven of you players will suck (71-73 OVR rating) and only significant upgrades at starting positions will raise your teams overall. Having two great players at the same position will absolutely do nothing good for your team. For example: You drafted an 85 Tight End in the 3rd round, don't go and draft The Gronk in the 10th round just because he’s available. Sure at 91 OVR he’s the best TE in the game but drafting him over your already 85 RE is only a +6 and will not help you as much as upgrading another position with a larger net OVR increase. This goes for all positions.
This point is delivered well in my video. As you can see on two occasions, I draft lower rated gold players over highly rated elites because it benefited my overall rating.
On that point with all things being equal always draft the player that will give you higher net gain ratings wise. I talk more about that point in the video.
Draft highly rated rare positions first. What this means is if there is only one position in your starting lineup, then choose that over positions where there are two. I.e. you only have one starter at QB or RB but two or three starters at WR or CB. This helps because later in the draft you will pull a deck with high rated players from positions you have already drafted (this will happen). You can double up on corners but not RTs. Get it?
Something I learned through trial and error this year is that some positions pull more weight in terms of overall than others. This may not be scientifically accurate but from my experience I can assume this:
QB > All
RB > All but QBs
WR > OL
TE > OL
DE > All secondary
DT Lowest weighted defensive position.
My final breakdown on my 83 run was:
- RB – 91 Emmit Smith
- QB – 87 Big Ben
- WR1 – 85 B-Marsh
- WR2 – 83 Sammy Watkins (chosen over an elite player)
- C – 87 T. Frederick
- RG – 85 T. Turner
- TE – 82 Ertz
- FS – 88 Honey Badger
- ROLB – 85 Haliiiiiiiii
- MLB – 86 The other B-Marsh lol
- LOLB – 86 A. Brooks (Niners!)
- CB1 – 89 J. Jenkins
- CB2 – 84 D. Trufaunt (Chosen over 2 elites)
- LE – 85 Cameron Jordan or Jordan Cameron?
- RE – 82 S. Richardson (underrated)
My final tip would be to pay attention to your team's overall rating in the top right corner of the screen. Sometimes it will fluctuate and inform you if a player will raise it so for every round make sure, you scroll over each player to check, no matter their rating. To re-draft without playing an entire draft champions event season, simply quit out of the first game.
