How to unlock the Explorer achievement in Mafia II - Definitive Guide
All Credit for the original guide goes to RudeN4t3d4w6.
Make sure you save the game (options menu) at approx. 990 miles, load your last save and then just drive the last 10 miles.
Hope it helps
UPDATE:
Glitch also works for the RUS & JP version of the game.
Just to help out fellow europeans since our stats are tracked in kilometers instead of miles. Unlocked with no problem for me, boosted to around 1587km then drove the rest on the highway.
Unlimited Point Glitch = 21-23/mph. This was with a rubber band holding down Right Trigger. Best for bedtime boosting.
Reverse Circles = 12-15/mph. Slowest method by far because gas actually has a direct effect.
Driving the Bridge = 70-75/mph. Defiantly the fastest but requires you to actually do it, therefore the most boring.
** Bridge Tip** - To get the best time out of this, I filled to a full tank then went and started "Walker Rocket Theft" on the map left of the bridge. I would then quit out so it saves my car there with a full tank of gas. Then whenever I ran out of gas or wrecked my car, I would just change an option to save then reload last checkpoint. Instant fresh car with a full tank and a short trip back to the bridge. Downside is the points don't save, just the miles.
Hope that helps people in deciding which method to go with. Good Luck!
First, make sure you're playing the DLC, as the miles from the main story do not count towards this achievement. With that being said, you'll want to find a nice open area with no traffic or obstacles to block your path; I suggest the dock area. When I first started to do this method, I usually would go with a Thunderbird - it seemed to have the best results in terms of staying in a descent circle. But then I tried it with a Cossack (car you get only from Made Man dlc pack) and felt that it maintained a higher speed when driving in a circle. It also didn't seem to do the jerky slow down when you ran out of gas.
If you have a wired controller, it works great, since you don't have to worry about it shutting off. When you get it set up how you want, wrap a rubber band around your controller to where the left joystick is facing right. Afterwards, tape the left trigger down. Once that's set up, watch your car for a few minutes to make sure it's going in a descent circle to where the car won't collide into anything. The reason I choose to go in reverse is because it causes the care to align in a near perfect circle. When accelerating forward, the donuts are not very consistent, and you will be stuck into something not long after you begin boosting. While there is an issue with fuel in the game, even though the car runs out of it, it will still go (slowly).
An additional add on for when you are feeling masochistic, is to drive on the bridge back and forth since it is 1 mile long. If you are one of the lucky few that have the Made Men DLC content in your game, then this tip applies to you. When you have your RL-3000 (fastest car in the game) take it to the body shop and buy the best wheels for it, along with the highest possible upgrade. This makes the bridge method a lot faster since you can reach higher speeds at a quicker rate. Whenever you are running low on gas, or you've wrecked your car too much, just take it back to your home's garage and park it. When you reopen the garage, pick that car. You should have a car in perfect condition with more fuel! Also, if you were wanting to keep the city score you get, you can do that by saving inside the house you're at.
The way I myself have been doing it is while I'm at sleep or work, I'll use the rubberband method. When I'm actually at home and am in the mood to play video games, I'll grind out a few miles, just so I'm speeding the process up. Once I start to feel pretty bored, I'll stop and play something else. This is a really long grinding achievement, and I'd rather do smaller sessions than go too overkill.
Note: If you have a problem with your game freezing, you can save your miles by simply pressing start, going to options, game settings, then toggle subtitles on/off. When you back out it will save your miles! Just make sure to save often, you really can't go wrong with saving too much. Also, I've heard reports of people's achievement not unlocking - if that's the case, save around the 995 mile mark and retry the game. Usually they will unlock it by doing this. But if they save after the 1000 mile mark, they were screwed.
The video below shows a good straight away area to drive on, along with the achievement unlocking.
Can any one else confirm this?
Does everyone know this already so they don't add it?
For example, I get about 12-15 miles for an hour ( approximate, It was an estimate) Whereas, if I used the rubber band on the trigger, I got 20+ miles for a half an hour. It's not huge,, but it takes less time this way.
Obviously you need a wired controller. And a rubberband.
It says you are running out of fuel, but I am testing this now and so far after 20 minutes of doing this it hasn't ran out of gas so I guess it never does.
The only difference I see is, on the speedometer the needle still bounces from 0-70, but instead of the tachometer just staying at around 10 or so, it jumps up to almost 140.
Try it and comment if it takes less time for you or not.
Edit: confirmed by Dillagence
. Head to the bridge that goes from Greenfield to Little Italy and go across to Little Italy.
. From little Italy, work your way to the freeway junction ( the one near Joe's apartment ). Join the Freeway southbound and go all the way around. ( from the bridge go down the hill to the very bottom, turn left go to Diamond motors, then right and then left and follow the road up and onto the freeway)
. When you have gone all the way round, you will be back at the bridge junction. Go left and down the hill and start over and keep on going until you have the 1,000 miles!
. Or go all the way around the freeway to Dipton, go round the sidestreets and then back onto the freeway going the other way and do a u-turn at the bridge and do that over and over.
Doing this achievement this way I got this in 4-5 days. I was covering both routes to add a bit of variety ( even though it isn't much ) which was around 200 miles a day. The freeway is around 5 miles each way from one end to another and the bridge is approx 1 mile each way if you want to add that to the route also. I used the Ascot Bailey fully tuned and if you crash or die your miles will not be affected. I was rammed over the side of the freeway a few times by drivers when I was doing this.
Most people may not do the achievement this way as it is very boring but for those who do hope this guide helps you out!
Fastest way to get this achievement is to drive at the bridge and highway's back and forth, honk your horn to make cars move out of the way. On my second save i had 70 or so hours cause i used rubberband method and reverse on the docks (credits to ABouncingSoul) to slowly gain miles while I sleep **NOTE** use normal not simulation driving setting to spin near perfect circles when boosting.
Near the end after boosting 620 miles and driving 380 miles on bridge/highway i got to 1000.19 miles, I got out and shot the gas tank (suggested on forums) and waited 1 minute and finally got it.
Recommended vechicles for bridge/highway: Smith Thunderbolt and Ascot Bailey. You can steal a new one driving around when your low on gas or smoking engine.
Save your game once in awhile incase the game freezes by going to menu/options and change a setting this will save all stats but city score. To keep your city score save at a safehouse/home. Make a backup save on usb/memory card around 995 miles incase it doesnt unlock.

Boosting Method:
Find an open, empty area and park your car. Use rubberband or duct-tape to on the LT (hold it down) and Left Analog stick (fix it to the left). This causes the car to reverse in circles over and over again. The car will run out of fuel but will keep moving. It's a slow and painful method, but at least you can go out of the house while the duct-tape/ rubberband do the driving for you.
Make sure you use a wired controller too. Wireless controllers tend to go off after a while even when duct-taped. - Optimus Neeker.

Boosting Locations:
1 - Outside warehouse on the docks by vehicle theft delivery.
2 - In the dead center of the park. - Skurkitty.

Just so you don't miss the 1,000 mile mark and potentially get screwed by the glitch.
Luckily this isn't tied to a specific vehicle but that is a lot of driving. Once your total distance travelled reaches 1,000 miles you'll receive this trophy.
unwraper1 has discovered a glitch that currently allows you to get this trophy by falling through the map. Getting the trophy via this method will take roughly 30-35 hours of falling, depending on your starting score. See the video below and this post by AJ1127 for details on where to start. To get the trophy via this method, turn off your controller's power saving function and plug it in to a USB cable to prevent it from turning off for any reason, then I would advise you to do this over several nights or leaving your PS3 on overnight and saving your progress in the morning. To save your progress, simply select "Restart Last Checkpoint" from the start menu, then go to any mission and start it to trigger an autosave. Your progress will be retained the next time you start the game. This has been tested and confirmed as working.
A map showing where this location is can be found here.
1.Disable the power saving mode of the joystick.
2.Connect the USB cable to it.
3. Video guide .
4.Save progress through "Restart Last Checkpoint".
