How to unlock the Massacre achievement in Mafia II - Definitive Guide

I found the best way to grind kills was on "The Don" mission located at the docks. I switched back and forth between machine guns depending on which type of ammo the enemies were dropping (changes by the area).

Make your way through the enemies leading up to Big Sal. It may seem like they spawn infinitely but they don't. If you keep moving forward, many enemies seem to run to a predetermined spot before they try to attack you, so you can just pick them off as they run past. I stuck to machine guns and tapped Left Trigger rapidly on distant targets to snap target them (on Easy difficulty). I could manage the run up to Big Sal in less than 5 minutes, killing anywhere from 65 to 75 guys depending on where I ran.

Once you've killed him, start running back and once you get to the 3 tankers enemies will start spawning behind you. Take a few out then let them kill you to avoid the rest of the run back to the safe zone.

This method should without a doubt get you the achievement in under 45 minutes if you've completed the story, which I finished with about 400 kills.

Each run getting 50 kills easy. Don't die at the beginning because the kills get easier at the last 30. I tried the other solutions including the top ranked one, and this is the fastest way to 1000 kills.

After I finished the game, I needed +/- 200 kills. With this mission, on Hard difficulty, you'll get around the 50/75 enemies to kill if you take your time and spend a lot of time in cover at the right spots.
+ 1 for this guide.

Do you have I get the 1000 kills in one playthrough? I played through it on hard but want to go for the 1000kills achievement on easy, because it's a long time ago I played Mafia 2... ;) When I start a game on normal or easy it shows all the kills in the game stats, does anyone know if it pops per 1000kills in one saveslot or via the statistics?

I got it with this solution, but instead of running all the way back, I would let the Don kill me. Saves your kills, and a lot of time running back.

@Hanshiro - I am pretty sure the game combines the totals of all your save slots. I can't confirm this exact achievement as yet but I CAN tell you that I got the one for 100 headshots from my combined total (my first save slot somehow became corrupted at 57% and wouldn't load and so I had to start over on another save slot.) I had about 70 or so from the corrupted save slot and then I still only needed to get the 30 or how ever many it was exactly for my achievement to pop :)

Ok I can now confirm that it definitely goes by total stats combined of all game slots. I unlocked this last night at exactly 1000 enemies and I had at least 100 from a different save slot. And this mission was definitely a quick way to grind out the remaining 300 for me :) +1

Thank you! That's great! Just looked at the solution here again because I've got time to do it now and two days ago you confirmed it. I feared I had to get 1000kills on my easy slot.

Ok, i'm at 1100 kills now and still no chievo. A quick google warns about using the glitch to go after miles/points before unlocking the kills, sadly i had no idea about that. Guess i'll have to start over...

A good method for sure. Think the 45 mins timer is a bit optimistic :) I had 400 kills when I started and it took me at least 2-3 hours using this method.

I can add one thing - kills caused by exploding vehicle (i.e. the first three goons killed by one of the yellow trucks) DOESN'T COUNT!!! Game requires kills by gun to make it count. I don't know what about grenades and molotovs, but car explode kills doesn't count for sure. You can add this.

Good solution. Once you kill the 3 enemies and the 2 on the bridge, keep run up the left side of the gas tanks, turn around and run back a group of 3 will spawn at the bottom of the line of tanks.(where the hut is), rinse and repeat. Once they spot spawning, run over to the red train carriage and 3 others will spawn and run over to you, kill them and run around the carriage. This will happen a few times. I think I got another 20+ kills doing this before they stopped and I saved my states and restarted the checkpoint (hence keeping all ammo spent during the level).

You'll get this by replaying missions in the game. By the time I was done with all missions i had 600 kills. The remaining 400 i got on the mission Sound and Furry which has quick easy kills (Top right on map by Bruski).

Start it up and run forward towards objective, equip machine gun, kill 2 enemies on the right behind fence, cover behind white car, shoot the 3 enemies running in the far back, then the guy on the left, last one around the corner to the left. This will get you x7 combo. reload last checkpoint and redo. This will take between half an hour to an hour to get 400 kills.

Awesome guide. I literally had a stopwatch -- from loading the mission to the next load was 58 seconds, so if you are consistent (and you will be once you do it a few times) I can confirm an easy 400+ kills in an hour. The benefit of this mission is that there is only a short distance from the spawn point to the enemies -- shaving valuable time. Nice one!

Much better solution than doing The Don over and over. The enemies are right there and you can finish each "cycle" in less than a minute. I went from 100 kills to 500 in an hour+.

!!! PLEASE READ THIS BEFORE GOING FOR MASSACRE !!!

As someone mentioned before, if you got Millionaire achievement with drop-through-the-floor-in-the-shop glitch, prior getting Massacre then the latter might not unlock for you (and Explorer as well). So this is possibly partial solution for Massacre not unlocking at 1000 kills.

So here it goes: I said it's partial because if you have save file with more than 1000 kills this won't work for you. Achievement system just tracks hitting 1000 threshold, not 1010 or 1200. (Bad coding example...).

So here's my "story" and what I did (step by step) to unlock the achievement.

1. I've got Millionaire achievement with above mentioned glitch.
2. I did not have the Explorer achievement at that moment.
3. IMPORTANT! I was replaying The Don mission to get 1000 kills, but I SAVED THE GAME (subs on/off method) when I got 993 kills. Let the enemies kill you at this point.
4. IMPORTANT! Started The Don mission again, but when I hit 1007 kills with NO Massacre achievement unlocked, I quit to dashboard without saving (just power off console or quit to dashboard from the game without returning back to menu or saving the game).
5. Just to be safe I copied Mafia II save file to Flash drive.
6. Started the game.
7. Selected Jimmy's Vendetta and pointed to Flash drive when asked. After game has started I checked that I still have 993 kills;
8. Pressed Continue and started The Don mission (can be any mission I think);
9. After exactly 7 kills Bang!!! achievement poped, saving me a lot of time and nerves instead of redoing it on the fresh save!

REMINDER: If you just started your way towards 1000 kills DO NOT FORGET to save somewhere between 990 and 999 kills.

Hope this will help to those of you who just going after Massacre cheevo or for those who have save file with less than 1000 kills.

This is confirmed as working method.

It worked for me even with me doing the millionaire glitch and didn't clear my cache or anything so the achievement must be buggy but I had no issues at all and I had about 931 enemy kills before doing the millionaire glitch.

Good to hear! I just described my experience with that issue, so if someone will confirm that clearing the cache is unnecessary - I'll edit the solution of course. Thanks for your input!

Isn't it just easier to get the massacre and explorer achievements before doing the millionaire achievement glitch or does that not work ?

Millionaire and Explorer were two of my first achievements of the DLC. I used the exploit. I had no problem unlocking Massacre afterwards. It popped at exactly 1000 kills.

I do not have this achievement yet but I am very close.

But i found the strategy that worked best in the mission "Tam in a Jam" this mission is located near the top right of the map theres a little path leading to it it's the only mission around.

I found it easy because there are at about 40 of his guys and you will already have about 600 of just playing through to this level. I may take a while but keep replaying the mission until you get it and if you get bored there are some other missions where yoy can rack up easy kills.

Don't forget to take plenty of ammo and also when you die the people you killed before you died still count towards the 10000.

Vote positive if this helped and please leave a comment if you find another easy solution and i will update it.

Thanks :]

Here's something no one has mentioned, that I would've liked to have known going into the post-game kill grind:

Collateral-explosion kills via exploded vehicles DO NOT COUNT!

Like many, I was using "The Don" mission to rack up my kills. This mission begins with a group of enemies (and the initial waves) positioned near three Hank B trucks. I thought I was being efficient in starting the mission by luring them closer to the trucks, then shooting the trucks' gas tanks. It was a fun way to start things off (with a bang)... until I realized those kills weren't being counted. This means every time I replayed the mission before this realization (which was a lot, I'm embarrassed to say), I was cheating myself out of the first eight-or-so kills.

Don't make the same mistake I made; just gun them all down. Even though collateral-explosive kills DO give you an Explosive Kill tally that keeps the combo alive, these kills are NOT considered legitimate by the game's Enemies Killed counter... which is pretty lame if you ask me.

This Solution guides you not only to work on this particular Xbox Achievement, but on two more during the effort. I suggest you shall go for this once you have achieved 100% completion in Jimmy’s Vendetta.

Please view my created relative video first: http://YouTu.be/ccADmT5xBpg

Getting armed: Purchase Grenade Mk.IIs from either Harry's or Giuseppe's Gun Shop. While Harry's place is around the top left of the map, Giuseppe's is a bit to the right of the center on the map.

Now you can get ready to learn about the destination: On the top center of the map, you will recognize a B-icon in a blue circle - it is for Bruski's Scrapyard. Only a bit below from there, is the Mission, Sound and Furry, if unlocked by you. It is the Mission you shall play when going for these Xbox Achievements for Mafia II in Jimmy’s Vendetta:
-Faster than Light (very simple to do that way/comes naturally)
-Firebug (very simple to do that way/comes naturally)
-Massacre (very efficient method)
-Explorer (you might just achieve 1% of the task, when you are always using a car to drive these few meters only every run - but there is no reason for not doing it - besides, perhaps you want more cars around a zone where you destroy everything, like me!)

I would say, the process is going down pretty fast - I doubt that there is a greater method than this. If you think so too, please vote positively on both: Solution; Video.

Kill 1,000 enemies to get this trophy. Note that police and civilians do not count towards this total. The good news is that any kills you get in replayed missions still count towards this total so you don't have to worry about running out of targets. In fact, even if you die or fail to complete a mission your total still counts.

By the end of the missions, you'll likely be about halfway to this total. To farm the rest, stock up on ammo (especially grenades) and do the mission "Account Closed" just above the east side of the Grand Upper Bridge. There is a big alley full of enemies. It will take you about two minutes with grenades to go through this alley and there are upwards of thirty enemies each time. Don't worry about being too careful, just run and gun, tossing grenades at any cars that a lot of enemies are using for cover. If you die or reach the end of the alley, then you can restart from the checkpoint to maintain your kill totals and refill your ammo. Each time you restart this mission it will automatically save your progress.

Of course, after completing Vendetta, as already written, you will not collect 1000 frags. After receiving this trophy, I began to complete the mission “Tam's Trouble” over and over again, but somehow it quickly became boring, and Thompson didn’t really help me complete the mission in “a couple of minutes.” I would advise you to buy ammunition and go to the docks, namely, complete the mission “Don” (if I’m not mistaken with the name, it’s the only one at the docks). I don’t deny that it’s not as quick to complete as the mission “Tem’s Trouble,” but it has its big advantages: firstly, the number of enemies in this mission exceeds 100 (I usually got about 106), and secondly, there are problems with weapons you won't have. In this mission, you don’t have to run headlong to kill Don, nervously looking at the timer, you will have plenty of time. The most important thing is to find good cover and wait for enemies who will gradually run up to you. After you kill Don at the lighthouse, do not immediately run to the safe zone, but slow down a little at three points: at the fuel tankers, near the carriages and near the yellow trucks. Enemies will run in almost the same packs as before. After making sure that no one else is running to scalp you, move to another shelter and carefully wait for your enemies. After all this, you will have more than 100 frags per mission and a good amount of points, since you can score a very good chain there.

The best place for Farming, in my opinion, is the “I'm not a coward” mission, in which you need to chase a dude who is running towards a car. There are about 30, maybe more, enemies in the mission. A small corridor, no one comes in the back (except the police). The start of the mission is right next to the check point, there is a point where you can snipe about 10 enemies. In general, I stuffed about 600 frags on it in an hour and a half. It’s not necessary to go all the way, it gets hot, reload the checkpoint. And yet, for some reason, enemies killed by an explosion do not count towards the overall count, just like the police.

A very good place for the Don mission, about 100 can be shot per visit. After killing the main target, calmly go to the exit, the enemies will gradually spawn, shoot them and calmly recruit them in several visits to this task

how to do it in an hour:
did it in the mission “Account Closed” (not far from the long bridge, on the right bank)
- come to the mission beacon with a Thompson and MP40, full ammunition and reloaded.
- you start killing everyone.
- You can also kill the police, or you can ignore them, because they don’t count.
- at the turn where the car starts to drive away - you allow yourself to be killed by the last enemy.

There is no need to complete the mission, the count will continue and you will always have full ammunition for the restart.
The mission beacon is very close to the enemies.
I haven’t had any additional kills from a gas tank/car explosion, so I don’t recommend it. As a result, there were 100 more “killings with weapons” than just “killings.”
You can get headshots and car explosions in the same mission.

The best mission for this is the penultimate mission in the port - "Don". After we have completed all the missions, we go and stock up on weapons and head to the port for this mission. There are countless enemies there, and even when you kill the target, the enemies will not stop coming. Even if you are killed, your progress will remain. Replay this mission until you get 1000 kills. For some reason, kills caused by a car explosion do not count.
