How to unlock the Hole in Your Pocket achievement in Mafia III: Definitive Edition - Definitive Guide
Edit 2/8/17: Some people are saying that this achievement isn't unlocking for them even after spending over $500,000. It's entirely possible that a recent update glitched it. If you're having trouble unlocking this achievement, please let me know in the comments, especially if you spent more than $500k in a single playthrough.
Edit 3/27/17: This may be fixed. If you haven't been able to get it to unlock before, try loading up the game to see if it will now work for you.
Edit 7/30/17: I don't know if spending money upgrading the marijuana grow op in Faster Baby! or Sammy's in Sign Of The Times counts toward this. However, it seems like a potential way to kill two birds with one stone, as there's achievements for fully upgrading both businesses.
Buying weapons and upgrades is the most obvious way to get this other than spending a lot of money on ammo, throwables, and armor. Since blowing through all your ammo and buying it up again just to spend money is stupid, spend your money on new weapons and upgrades for Lincoln and his arsenal.
You can't upgrade the special weapons, but upgrades for pistols, shotguns, rifles, and automatic weapons can be purchased for as high as $18,000. Upgrade Lincoln's accuracy, total ammo carrying capacity, stability, and reload speed. Note that you have to Cassandra's earn up high enough to purchase these upgrades from the arms dealer. The requirements are:
Improved Accuracy - $60,000
Increased Ammo Capacity - $140,000
Improved Stability - $220,000
Faster Reload - $370,000
This achievement isn't too difficult as long as you're maximizing the earn from all of your rackets and you're well into the game. I was buying some of the weapons and all of the upgrades as they became available and still had $100,000+ in the bank at all times.
Getting Vito's earn to $140,000 upgrades the Consigliere Assistant so that she will automatically collect your kickback from your Underbosses. This saves you a lot of driving and keeps the cash flowing in.
(It should be noted that progress on this achievement carries across playthroughs. And since this game requires at least two playthroughs to 100%, if you're not in a hurry you could just shoot for $250k spending per playthrough which would be very easy.)

@bdp123; A couple of players who have had long-time glitched achievements were able to resolve them with the Definitive Edition that is free for owners of the original game. However, you must first delete your old save file everywhere.
Press on your controller to open the guide, and then select My games & apps.
Highlight the game, press on your controller, and then choose Manage game & add-ons.
In the menu on the left, go down to Saved Data, then highlight the saved data for your gamertag on the right and press on your controller.
You will be asked about deleting the save data:
Choose:
Delete everywhere to remove the saved data from your console, the cloud, and all other consoles you play on.
Uninstall the game. Even if you have installed the Definitive Edition, uninstall it because there has been interaction with a possibly corrupted save file. So, this precaution is to remove potential corruption from game files:
Clear the cache. This is to prevent the corruption from coming back to the reinstalled game and/or the new save files:
Press and hold on the front of the Xbox until it turns off completely.
If you have a power brick, unplug it from the back of the Xbox. If you don't have a brick, just unplug the XBox. Press and hold on the front of the Xbox several times to remove any remaining power and clear the cache.
Plug in the power brick if you have one or just plug in the XBox One if you don't have a brick.
Wait for the light on the power brick to change from white to orange. If you don't have a power brick, wait for at least one minute.
Turn the Xbox back on as you would normally.
Install the Definitive Edition of Mafia III. Start a new game.
It's easier to kill the racket bosses than to flip them because you don't have to gather all the intel required to flip them. So, if you decide to do this, I'd recommend working on spending the 500K and killing the racket bosses.

All my save data was already deleted from the old console plus I am playing on a brand new console entirely different then the one I originally beat the game on.
Was your save data deleted from the cloud?Playing on a new console, normally solves the problem of corrupted files preventing achievements from unlocking. However, if the global XBox Live save file was not deleted, as soon as you started up the game, your new console would synch with this global save file and, possibly, import the glitch that had afflicted you earlier.
Oversimplifying, back in 2016, you spent over 500K. So, the game thought it gave you an achievement. But it was never credited to XBox Live because of the glitch. Even after the glitch was fixed, in your old save file, you have been credited with spending over 500K. So, the game thinks you already have the achievement and won't give it to you again.
Right now, if I look at your Mafia III page, your stats say you have earned over 1.2M. I think that is more than you earned in the last few days. I think much of that cash is what you earned back in 2016. Similarly, I think the game has retained your old spending which exceeded 500K. My supposition is that it is that old spending that was retained in the global save file that is telling the game not to give you the achievement.
