How to unlock the Apprentice achievement in Magic Duels - Definitive Guide
If you're like me, and you're terrible at building a competitive deck and trying to beat people online, don't fret. This can be boosted with either two people or doubleboxed. That's how I did it, and it was surprisingly easier than I thought it would be.
The trick is you need to dashboard during the loading screen where it shows the character/background. If you quit your game at that point, it won't count as a loss.
Setting things up is simple. There are no 'range brackets', so a level 1 can match up with a level 35. If you're boosting with two boxes, your second profile will always lose. If you're boosting it with a partner, have one person be the dedicated loser first and the other the dedicated winner. Every win is +1, every loss is -1, so you can't trade off until one person has gotten to 40. What decks you build doesn't really matter, but I would recommend building several decks as this method also works great for doing the new daily challenges which are largely 'do something in a versus match'. So you can work on those at the same time.
When you make your deck, make a note of what character avatar you choose for the deck, as well as what background is on the deck.
This is important, because when you're matching up, the character choice and the background choice will be how you identify if you've found the other person or not. If you're doing this with another person, communication is also very important. I used the bald white guy with a plains background for one deck and an armored bearded man with a mountains background for the other (if you leave a negative because I don't know their official names...shame on you.)
Choose a time very late at night, I boosted this typically after midnight PST.
The losing profile starts searching first, and after two seconds the winning profile starts searching as well. If you find someone that isn't your partner, hit the guide button, scroll down to Magic Duels, hit Start, and go to Quit. Load the game up and go back to the 'Versus Battle with a Matched Opponent' and try again when you're both ready. As a tip, wait for the game to start showing the picture of the opponent before you decide the matchmaking failed, as there were some times where one profile would find someone and start loading the picture before the other started loading, even if both profiles had matched.
Once you're in the game, You must play it. The losing profile can just mulligan their hand down to one card and just keep skipping with Y, while the winner needs to put down creatures and take the opponents health down to 0. You can work on whatever daily challenges you have to do in a versus match or whatever.
Any questions, let me know. I used this method because I'm terrible with versus and I'd say overall it took maybe 5 hours to go from 0-40. Achievement timestamps tell me it took me 59 minutes to go from 30-40.
