How to unlock the Master achievement in Magic Duels - Definitive Guide

EDIT: Support for this game ended in late November 2019 and it appears that this achievement is no longer obtainable.

In order to earn this achievement, you need a 40 win differential in versus battles with a matched opponent. Each win raises your rank by one and each loss lowers your rank by one.

There was an exploit that allowed you to dashboard to prevent losses from counting, but that has been patched. The only way to get this now is by maintaining a greater than 50% win percentage and building your rank to 40.

Edit: Sets were released after I stopped playing so listing a deck I had success with years ago is pointless. Your best bet for a good current deck is to check No Goblins Allowed.

I like this guys deck and have given him a thumbs up. If you feel like you have a better idea than him write up a guide. Your comment gives little help to those looking for a good deck to use.

4 out of 5 times, my game freezes and takes me back to dashboard, when people use the exploit and closes down the game....makes it almost impossible to get these achievements for me :( so its not completely true, that it doesnt inconvenience the guy you play against..i still voted positive though

I've won over 100 online duels and I've never had it freeze when the other player leaves. Crappy.

This hasn't popped for me - All lower rank achievements popped as soon as I hit the rank. Anyone else experience this?

The 'hitting the home button/quit' method no longer works since the latest update. Just a heads up.

And now, strangely.. I am noticing that my first season(Origins) ranking.. has been changed from 40 to 0.. and after being demoted for leaving from the last match, the next match that I won, I was promoted twice.. So, something is definitely going on that I am not sure of. Hopefully my 40 rank will be restored for the first season, instead of that ugly 0.. Anyone else's experiences with the new update and their ranks would be appreciated.

I don't believe that quitting out keeps your rank anymore... :(

It does not keep your rank. Disconnecting, dashboarding, losing power or losing the game will count as a loss and rank you down now. You need to do this legit now.

Incidentally, the matchmaking in this game is terrible. I recently started (5 total online games) and all but one have been against level 30+ with crazy decks and expensive customizations.

Just as a headsup to those looking, if you are terrible at building decks like I am, you can still boost this between two profiles via quitting out. I posted a solution as to how I did it.

I play mono red, it's super fast sometimes you can deal 7 damage in turn 2. Red can generate lots of tokens, burn any creature early game to the ground. And if you have assembled your red army, play embernaw Helion Boom game over.

https://www.reddit.com/r/magicduels/ also has a decent community with some good tips. Currently they're suggesting new people try spending coins on Kaladesh. Can build a decent Boros aggro deck with vehicles. Alternatively, invest in Eldritch Moon and/or Shadows Over Innistrad to build a humans or vampires deck. Of course, it'll take a while to save up the coins, especially with a 400 coin per day limit and you need to buy most of Origins to get the other achievements, but Origins kind of sucks for cards.

For anyone still trying to get this, I suggest trying this deck (not my creation):

https://www.magicduelshelper.com/decklist/details/e1c643c4-d...

It's a red/white vehicle deck that uses mostly cards from Kaladesh, with a few Origins and one AER card thrown in. I was lucky enough to have enough coins to buy all of the Kaladesh and AER cards when they were on sale recently, so I went looking for a deck that combines the two and this one was the first one I saw.

It's not invincible - no deck is - but it is fast and strong enough to take out even the 5-color removal/Planeswalker decks that you tend to see the high-ranked players using. I'd estimate that I won 70-80% of my matches with this deck, including numerous games where I never had more than 3 mana available.

For comparison's sake: I never made it past rank 10 in any of the previous seasons, yet with this deck I hit rank 40 in just a few weeks. I hit rank 30 less than two weeks after hitting rank 15, and it only took me two more days to get from 30 to 40.

If you're like me, and you're terrible at building a competitive deck and trying to beat people online, don't fret. This can be boosted with either two people or doubleboxed. That's how I did it, and it was surprisingly easier than I thought it would be.

The trick is you need to dashboard during the loading screen where it shows the character/background. If you quit your game at that point, it won't count as a loss.

Setting things up is simple. There are no 'range brackets', so a level 1 can match up with a level 35. If you're boosting with two boxes, your second profile will always lose. If you're boosting it with a partner, have one person be the dedicated loser first and the other the dedicated winner. Every win is +1, every loss is -1, so you can't trade off until one person has gotten to 40. What decks you build doesn't really matter, but I would recommend building several decks as this method also works great for doing the new daily challenges which are largely 'do something in a versus match'. So you can work on those at the same time.

When you make your deck, make a note of what character avatar you choose for the deck, as well as what background is on the deck.

This is important, because when you're matching up, the character choice and the background choice will be how you identify if you've found the other person or not. If you're doing this with another person, communication is also very important. I used the bald white guy with a plains background for one deck and an armored bearded man with a mountains background for the other (if you leave a negative because I don't know their official names...shame on you.)

Choose any time you want, though if you do it in daytime hours of PST/EST, it will take you slightly longer to match up than if you do it in nighttime hours of PST/EST.

The losing profile starts searching first, and after two seconds the winning profile starts searching as well. If you find someone that isn't your partner, hit the guide button, scroll down to Magic Duels, hit Start, and go to Quit. Load the game up and go back to the 'Versus Battle with a Matched Opponent' and try again when you're both ready. As a tip, wait for the game to start showing the picture of the opponent before you decide the matchmaking failed, as there were some times where one profile would find someone and start loading the picture before the other started loading, even if both profiles had matched.

Once you're in the game, You must play it. The losing profile can just mulligan their hand down to one card and just keep skipping with Y, while the winner needs to put down creatures and take the opponents health down to 0. You can work on whatever daily challenges you have to do in a versus match or whatever.

Any questions, let me know. I used this method because I'm terrible with versus and I'd say overall it took maybe 5 hours to go from 0-40. Achievement timestamps tell me it took me 59 minutes to go from 30-40.

Just as an addendum, I put that you should try to do this very late at night, but you can also do this during the day. It just will take a little longer to match up correctly, but not egregiously so. I do this method for easily boosting my Versus daily challenges and still match up within 2-3 attempts during the day.

When is "late at night?". What timezone we talking here?

Oh, late at night for PST or EST. I'm actually going to clarify it to time not mattering, because I do mine at any time now and I don't have a problem matching up.

Nice, plus one from me, just tried it, 10pm GMT and matched up with my dummy account 5 times in a row

I’m doing this in the middle of the day. Most I’ve gotten is 2 in a row, but never took more than 5 tries to match up. I’m still easily getting the solution’s estimate of 10 per hour. Thanks for the solution.

Master (50)
Hit rank 40 in ranked Versus Battles

short explanation about ranks, if anyone has any doubts as to how it works:
You start at rank 0 or 1.
If you win an online ranked match, your rank goes up by 1.
If you lose an online ranked match, your rank goes down by 1.
Your current rank or your opponents rank does not affect this - you go up or down by 1 rank.
If you lose connection to the server, you cannot gain rank. I don't know if you can lose rank, but I expect it to be similar.
If you lose connection to the internet or the game "fatal errors", I don't know if it affects your rank. Your opponent will get an AI, and can finish his/her game to gain a rank (or lose one).
The maximum rank is 40, which unlocks the "Master" achievement.

my red/white aggro-control decklist:
1x Kytheon, Hero of Akros
2x Anointer of Champions
3x Elite Vanguard
2x Fiery Impulse
4x Titan´s Strength
2x Knight of the White Orchid
2x Abbot of Keral Keep
4x Divine Favor
4x Inferno Fist
4x Celestial Flare
2x Twin Bolt
1x Chandra, Fire of Kaladesh
3x Iroas´s Champion
2x Exquisite Firecraft
1x Archangel of Tithes
1x Avaricious Dragon
7x Plains
9x Mountains
2x Clifftop Retreat
4x Boros Guildgate

This is the hardest achievement in the game, but with a little luck and a very good deck is feasible to do. Winning a Competitive Versus Match increase your level by 1. Losing decrease it by 1. Yo have to reach level 40 (highest level in the game) to unlock the achievement. That means that you have to win at least 2 competitive duels per duel you lose if you want to make any progress towards it.

The best way to do this is to exploit a "glitch". You can quit to the dashboard before losing to avoid the -1 rank penalty. If you do that, the opponent will be matched with a God mode AI on whats left of the match. So, if you are going to quit, wait until the last moment of the game when defeat is inevitable so that the AI doesn't make a comeback. Remember, bro's before chievo's.
