Explosive bricks are introduced in levels 4-1 thru 4-6 (Alchemy Tower). Once a ball hits an explosive brick, the ball will violently ricochet around. This makes controlling the ball difficult, let alone strategically aiming for more explosive bricks.
I managed to get this by luck, as it unlocked through normal play for me. However, this is another instance where you can continuously restart stages in order to get a good setup. Level 4-3 might be a good choice.
