How to unlock the Descendent of Iga achievement in Mark of the Ninja - Definitive Guide

You can earn three stars in a level in two ways; either by sneaking past everyone, without killing or being detected, or by killing everyone you come across. Both methods will just as easily give you a three star rank.

The easier way, however, is to just go serial killer and slaughter anyone you see. Here are some things I kept in mind while getting three stars, going for kills in every level:

- If you get detected, and the 800 point deduction appears in red, you should just restart checkpoint from the pause menu. This'll reset your session status to being undetected, and you'll still net the "no detection" bonus at the end of the level. Plus you get to keep your 800 points.

- Distract guards before killing them. If there's a lamp, gong or similar anywhere in their vicinity, you can throw a dart at it to get 150 extra points before going for the kill. You can lure guards towards a lamp by running one step, to make a little bit of noise, and then hiding somewhere close-by. You can only get the distraction once per guard.

- Try to hide in shadows before you get the kill, to get a 200 point "undetected" bonus. If there's nothing to hide in, you can also get the bonus by hanging down from a perch as they walk past. Last, but not least, you can also get the bonus by teleporting through the guard using the Mark of Serenity skill. You can lure stationary guards past shadowy areas by running one step as well.

- Always hide corpses if you can! You can only stuff one corpse into a dumpster, but you can hide as many as you wish within vents.

- Terrorizing guards can work out very well. A terrorized guard will give you a 600 point "friendly fire" bonus if he kills any of his buddies, which can be more than the 400 points you might score if you kill him yourself. You can terrorize guards by using the arrow in your inventory, stringing up corpses or by tossing corpses at other guards. Terrorizing is pretty situational and requires a bit of creativity on your side, and isn't exactly necessary, but it's pretty fun and the more points you get, the better.

- The highest-scoring kills are using traps, getting a guard to shoot another guard, lynching them and dragging someone into a vent to slice their throat. All of them give 600 points, while a vanilla stealth kill only yields 400.

- In the Tabriz levels, it's a very good idea to throw darts at traps and lure enemies into them. They will obliviously walk right into them and give you a hefty 600 points for the kill. Also, in Tabriz, you can get double points for a kill if there's a spike pit nearby. Early on in one of the levels, I got 1200 points for dropping a chandelier on two guards, and then another 1200 for tossing them into the spikes not two feet away.

- And one final tip: the three stars aren't really that hard to obtain at all. Just work your way through the level, killing everyone you can find in as creative ways as you can, while avoiding detection, and you'll be more than fine. I just wanted to provide a comprehensive solution. Finally, it's probably a good idea to get the stars before you get started on New Game+, as that mode is slightly harder.

That's a lot of tips here. It's worth noting, maybe at the beginning, that the "stars" the game refers to in the achievement aren't called stars anywhere else and don't look like stars. They are the little circular coin-looking awards at the end of level that are given based on the number of points you have in the level.

- Until you get to the last few levels, three stars is trivial, and I wouldn't bother restarting a checkpoint to keep my undetected status unless it's related to one of the seals.

- Hiding corpses is great, not only because you get a bonus for hiding the body, but because you get another bonus for an "oblivious" guard that walks past a hidden body. Keep that in mind when deciding where to hide bodies.

- Some of the kills you mention do give 600 points rather than 400, but result in there not being a body to hide (or the body already being hidden, like the vent kill). If there is a place to hide a body nearby, you can get more points from a vanilla stealth kill and a hide than you can from, say, lynching a guard or using the Ravenous Insects.

- The final two levels have tough point totals. In the next to last one especially, I found that working my way through undetected and without killing anyone was the best way - the bonuses are significant. In either, if you do kill someone, it's probably best to kill everyone. Killing one person loses you a bonus, so you'll need to kill at least ten or so to offset that loss.

Honestly, after I got the death dart (that terrorizes) and upgraded it I spammed that thing throughout levels. I had to backtrack in some parts quite a distance to restock, but that dart will send enemies into a frenzy killing others nearby (I believe friendly fire is 300 points) and, if upgraded, will cause them to commit suicide (600 points for ninja tool kill). Areas with dogs I would terrorize a guard and let him kill the canine, then just hide the bodies.

Also, going back through once you obtain the Mark of Serenity was also helpful for staying undetected (200 points per guard plus the end mission bonus).

Question that this solution does not provide! Do i need to get 3 stars in first playthrough AND new game plus or whatever it is called?

Secondly! Can i start new game plus and go back to normal run and get missing stars there if it is only needed now for one of the two?

Negative vote from me until someone can confirm the only thing i went here to find. Do you need to earn 3 stars in both normal and game plus? It does say every level but not sure if it means like every level for both playthroughs.

Yes you can switch back and forth from normal mode to new game plus. And you only need 3 stars in normal mode.

In order to get all three stars in a level, you may need to milk some points out of it by using getting "hidden" points from every enemy possible, even the ones you plan to kill. Meaning if you have the opportunity to hide () inside of a dumpster, or plant, etc. as an enemy passes you by, you will get 200 points apiece. On a grapple point, or in a vent will also yield points if they get close enough and don't spot you. Distracting enemies also counts for extra points, so distract every enemy possible and wait for the ? over their head to go ahead to get credit for undetected, and then air that with perfect stealth kills and that's some easy points (750 for one kill with all 3 bonuses). You will also want to look around the map for artifacts, which are on pedestals scattered throughout each level, and can be picked up by pressing . Note that though NG+ has the scores erased, you only need to get 3 stars on each of the normal missions.

Points to reach for 3 star:
Level 1 - 23000 Level 6 - 29000 Level 11 - 17000
Level 2 - 21000 Level 7 - 15000 Level 12 - 27000
Level 3 - 34000 Level 8 - 29000
Level 4 - 21500 Level 9 - 19000
Level 5 - 19000 Level 10 -31000
