How to unlock the Cat's in the Cradle achievement in Mass Effect 2 - Definitive Guide
To gain the loyalty of Thane, you must perform his quest on the Citadel, where you stop his son from becoming an assassin. You obtain this quest by talking to Thane on the Normandy once prompted; Kelly will tell you when he is ready to talk about it, and the quest will also appear in your Missions log in your journal.
** DETAILED SPOILERS BELOW **
The quest gets underway on the Citadel, by talking to the C-SEC officer near the entrance (after customs, after the security door -- in the C-SEC office). [NOTE: it appears that you must have Thane in your party to receive the appropriate dialogue options.] He directs you to Mouse, a petty criminal, who tells you the name of the man who hired Thane's son. After you finish up with mouse, you then return to the C-SEC officer, who agrees to bring in that man (whom he has an "understanding" with, complicating matters) and allows you to interrogate him privately. That man eventually discloses the name of his target, a turian politician. After that interrogation and the subsequent conversation with the C-SEC officer, you will go to the area where the turian politician is campaigning. If you successfully follow him around the area without losing him, you will be able to prevent Thane's son from completing the assassination (either by preventing the death or by using a Renegade action to shoot the turian yourself).
** END DETAILED SPOILERS **
If you complete the mission and the assassination target is killed by Thane's son, there should be an autosave that takes you back far enough to allow you to try again to prevent it. You must prevent the assassination (or complete it yourself) to gain this achievement.
If you lose the Turian when following him, you will fail and not get his loyalty.
At the end, if you don’t disarm Kolyat and stop the assassination, you will also fail and lose his loyalty.
It is possible with high enough Renegade to kill the target yourself and still get his loyalty.
By repeated conversations with your squad members on the Normandy (in-between missions), they will eventually come to you for help about a certain situation. Agree and offer to give them help, and you will be given their loyalty mission. Next time you visit the galaxy map, it will show you where to go for each loyalty mission you have (a little note will pop up, EX: “Help Thane”).
Thane’s loyalty mission is another many seem to have difficulty with. There are two key factors in failing:
- If you lose sight of the Turian diplomat, you lose your lead, and you will fail.
- At the end, if you don’t disarm Kolyat and stop the assassination, you will fail.
You can also assassinate the target yourself (Renegade) and still get Thane's loyalty.
Talk to Thane in between missions. He is on the third level of the ship, in the Life Support section. Loyalty missions will not be available until after the mission on Horizon is completed. Thane’s loyalty mission will unlock after speaking with him once.
This is one of those missions that can give some people trouble. You can fail this in two ways, so make an extra save before beginning the mission. When you arrive on the Citadel, talk to Captain Bailey about finding a drell. He’ll tell you to find a contact named Mouse. Speak to him and he’ll give you the name of the person who hired Thane’s son, Elias Kelham. Return to Bailey and speak with him. You’ll get to interrogate Kelham. You can do whatever you want to interrogate him, but the renegade options provide some hilarious lines. After the interrogation, Kelham will tell you that he hired Kolyat to kill a politician named Joram Talid. This is where things get tricky.
You have to follow Talid on the catwalks above him and check in after every stop with Thane. If you lose sight of him, you will fail the mission. Always keep an eye on him and try not to get too far ahead. When you reach Talid’s apartment, Kolyat will take out the bodyguard and run after Talid inside. Here’s the second point where you can fail the mission. If you let Kolyat kill Talid, Thane will not become loyal. You can kill Talid for the renegade option or use the paragon option to stop him (Thanks to Lord Maim for the info). After you somehow convince Kolyat to not carry out the assassination, he and Thane will have a conversation and then you can return to the Normandy.
