How to unlock the Scientist achievement in Mass Effect 2 - Definitive Guide
Go to any category and choose an upgrade, (Orange means you can purchase it, Grey means you don't have enough resources). Choose an upgrade in orange and "research it" and the achievement will unlock.
NOTE: If you need resources, go to the galaxy map and go to any planet, scan the planet for resources.
After you recruit Mordin, the Tech Lab access is open, and the research terminal is either to the left or directly in front of you, depending on how you enter. You will have several options to choose from including weapons, ammo, prototypes and ship enhancements.
To research any tech, you will need a certain amount of resources: Element Zero, Iridium, Platinum, and Palladium. All of these can be found throughout the galaxy by visiting a planet and scanning for resources. If the research is orange, you have enough resources and may complete the research for that item. If it is grey, you will require more resources.
If starting a complete new game you may not have enough resources, however you should have enough if you import your save from Mass Effect.
If you leave negative feedback, please state why so I may correct. Thanks!
Once you have recruited Mordin, you can complete Research Projects in the Tech Lab. You can pick up plans for these projects around the environment on missions and such.

You won't be able to access the Normandy's lab until you recruit Mordin. The sooner that you recruit Mordin, the better. Head into the Tech Lab. The research terminal will either be right in front of you or the first thing to your left depending upon which door you enter through. Activate the terminal and select one of the options (Weapon Upgrades, Armor Upgrades, Ship Enhancements, or Prototypes). If you have enough of the four minerals (iridium, platinum, palladium, and eezo), you'll be able to complete most of them without a problem.
Since there won't be a bonus for having a Mass Effect game save, you'll most likely have to gather resources beforehand. See Prospector for more info.
