How to unlock the Technician achievement in Mass Effect 2 - Definitive Guide

This achievement becomes possible once you recruit Mordin Solus for your team, at which point you can access the upgrades console in the Tech Labs on the Normandy.

Upgrades can be found during missions by looking around, by purchasing them at stores, or by consulting with your team members on the Normandy, who often have special upgrades to add. Upgrades that you've purchased at a store immediately go into effect and count towards the achievements. Upgrades found in the field or given by crew members, however, have to researched in order to count toward the achievement (this will also make them go into effect). This requires mineral resources and can be done at the research terminal in the Tech Labs on the Normandy (where Mordin is), or by selecting the upgrades option in the dialogue wheel when talking to members of your team on the Normandy. Once you have researched or purchased 10 total upgrades, the achievement will unlock.

A list of all upgrades (and weapons) to be found in the field (remember that you have to research these on the Normandy for them to go into effect): http://www.gamefaqs.com/boards/genmessage.php?board=944907&a...

You don't necessarily have to go out of your way for this achievement. 10 upgrades is a rather small amount, and you can likely get this without any major sidequesting. If you want to be extra cautious, the link posted above will help.

Agreed that this achievement comes rather quickly. Got it before leaving Omega just by looking around during quests and mining 2 planets for minerals.

For people doing multiple playthroughs:
When I played Mass Effect 2 the first time I mined every single planet and had over 400000 iridium, over 300000 platinum and palladium and over 100000 Element Zero, but I ran out credits and couldn't buy all of the upgrades. So in one of playthoughs I bought all the upgrades and didn't research anything until right before the Omega 4 Relay and came up with the approximate amount of each element you need to research every upgrade.

Element zero- 35000
Iridium- 225000
Platinum-265000
Palladium-225000

If you have an import save from Mass Effect 1 and beat Mass Effect 2, you get up to 50000 of each element, so you won't even need to mine for element zero. So basically you can mine until you get these amounts then won't have to waste any more credits for mining probes. You will also get more elements from containers while doing missions.

For the most part if you just examine the obvious blue squares you come across in your path of playing the game then you'll get this. But if you choose to force it then here is list of all mods that will add to your count and can be found in the field.

Once you have recruited Mordin, you can complete Research Projects at the station in the Tech Lab. Go to the weapons and it will show you what upgrades you can make. You will find these upgrades during missions, which will then be available to create.

You will find upgrades lying around missions, and you can purchase upgrades on Omega, The Citadel, Illium and Tuchanka. Obtain any assortment of 10 tech upgrades to unlock the achievement.

Note: Purchased upgrades will directly count; you don’t need to research them, unlike the ones you pick up.

Purchasable Upgrades:
Harrot’s Emporium - Omega - Predictive Display

Saronis Applications - The Citadel - Microcore Amplifier, Ablative VI
Cirta Foundation - The Citadel - Microscanner

Serrice Technology - Illium - Hyper Amp, Quantum Threading, Microscanner
Gateway Personal Defense - Illium - Lattice Shuntting

Fortack’s Database - Tuchanka - Hyper Amp

See "Weapon Special" for a list of purchasable weapon upgrades, which also count towards this achievement.

Once you have recruited Mordin, then the Tech Lab will be available. You'll find upgrades to purchase throughout the game on the ground, by purchasing them from vendors, or by talking to your crew members. You will need one of the four major elements (element zero, palladium, platinum, and iridium) in the game to research the upgrades though. Head to the research computer in the Tech Lab and begin your upgrading.

Find 10 improvements and the trophy will be yours. Finding them is very easy, you just need to explore all corners of the level. You need to look for improvements that affect the characteristics of technical skills. Mordin has one of them, but the rest can be found from merchants, as well as by carefully studying the levels and completing side quests.
