How to unlock the Weapon Specialist achievement in Mass Effect 2 - Definitive Guide

I was having trouble finding where some of the weapon upgrades were but then I found this guide and it proved to be very helpful. I hope it helps others who also had any trouble with this achievement.

http://masseffect.wikia.com/wiki/Upgrade_guide

I do not take any credit for this guide.

That wikia site is very helpful.

Do I need to get EVERY upgrade for the weapon? The counter shows x/7 upgrades. So do I need 7 only, or all of them?

Along with finding upgrades throughout missions, you can purchase upgrades on Omega, The Citadel, Illium and Tutchanka. The in-game achievement tracker will let you know how many you have left on a specific weapon after upgrading it. Use those in the Tech Lab where Mordin is on the Normandy and the achievement will unlock when all upgrades are complete.

I missed out on this on my first playthrough, even though I bought every single upgrade from all of the places mentioned I still couldn't get all the upgrades for one weapon. I suggest using the Mass Effect wiki on missions to make sure you pick up every upgrade available for each mission if you wanna be 100% sure that you're not missing the achievement.

Interestingly, you can get this before you get all of the upgrades for a weapon, not sure if it's a glitch, or an oversight from DLC, or what, but...

I got 5 Damage upgrades for the AR, the accuracy upgrade, and then a second non-damage upgrade (forget what it did, probably was armor piercing rounds or something). Achievement popped. Ten minutes later, I scan something on a mission and it says I found a damage upgrade for the AR. Suddenly I'm at 5/6 damage instead of 5/5. Lolwut?

Regardless, I got the achievement. Just wanted to share my story.

Each weapon has five or six damage upgrades as well as a two other enhancements that can be added on. The Heavy Weapons have ammo upgrades instead of damage upgrades. To achieve this you need to pump any one gun to the maximum. I will give an example for an assault rifle that has seven upgrades, and the schematics for it are scattered throughout the missions and stores:

1. Increased damage - Mordin recruitment mission (behind the mercenary barricades in front of the hospital)
2. Increased damage - Tali recruitment mission (in the room behind the column that you mined)
3. Increased penetration ability - will open after the first two damage upgrades
4. Increased damage - shop on Illium
5. Increased shooting accuracy - unlocked after three damage upgrades
6. Increased damage - shop on Tuchanka
7. Increased damage - mission for Samara’s loyalty (in Morinth’s house there is a machine gun on the wall, you take the schematic from it and I earned a like :8)

In the Legendary Edition, you can get a damage upgrade as a daily delivery on the Shadow Broker's ship, so it's okay if you missed something.

The trophy dropped when purchasing the latest rifle upgrade scheme; before that, the rifle was improved by 4/5 and with two unlocked schemes.

I want to add a little and maybe correct my last upgrade “increasing the damage of a sniper rifle 5/5” I took on the Legion recruitment mission.

I don’t know if it’s a bug or a feature, but after fully leveling up a heavy weapon, the trophy didn’t drop.

To get the trophy, you need to completely upgrade ANY of the main types of weapons (which thermal cartridges require).
The total will be 7/7 - 3 pieces found + 2 pieces purchased Damage Upgrade + 2 additional pieces, which are opened automatically in the technolab.
It is not necessary to download ALL types. HEAVY weapons do not count.
During the course of the story, the submachine gun was the first to be fully upgraded.
