How to unlock the Hijacker achievement in Mass Effect Legendary Edition - Definitive Guide

In order to hijack an Atlas mech you need to first take out its shields (blue health bar) then aim for the the cockpit and keep shooting until you break the glass, then kill the pilot. Once you've done this the cockpit opens and you can approach the mech and press cn_A to enter. You want to avoid a direct line of sight with the right arm of the Atlas to avoid its missiles when possible.

*Cannot be done on Sur'kesh*

This can be done early on during the mission Grissom Academy: Emergency Evacuation, there will be an Atlas during the first major firefight and another to end the mission.

If you missed that opportunity Atlas mechs can also be found in Priority: Eden Prime, Tuchanka: Bomb, Priority: The Citadel II, Arrae: Ex-Cerberus Scientists, Omega: Aria T'Loak, Citadel Archives: Escape, and the second to last mission.

So I'm not the only one that can't seem to get in the Atlas?

You can also get this at the end of Priority: Eden Prime. Which is available as early as Priority: Palavin, after you go to the citadel for the first time

so far havent been able to do it on ex-cerberus scientists, i let the atlas kill both my squadmates and let loose till his shields were gone, switch to my sniper an broke the glass, took out my assault rifle and fired twice to kill the pilot, after he died the mech immediately blew up. is it possible here or is it like sur kesh

Sometimes if you leave the mech for last it blows up automatically so that it doesn't stall the mission. It can also just be glitchy for a number of reasons but I did personally enter the atlas on each of these missions as I added them to the solution. Focus on the mech at the beginning of the fight and have the mindset that you're going to use it to kill the rest of the enemies.

I've attempted this on both Priority: Eden Prime and Grissom Academy and neither attempted has popped the achievement.

The Citadel coup mission is tailor-made for this achievement. After KL crashes your skycar into the Presidium, there are three battles before you get to the elevator. The third one has an Atlas that comes out right away, and you can save just before, so if something goes wrong, you can reload and try again without having to waste a lot of time getting to the Atlas.

You can't seem to get it on N7: Fighter Base, there is an atlas, but I broke open the cockpit 4 times in a row but the atlas just blows up and doesn't become hijackable

Easiest way to get is on Grissom Academy. After you jump in the mech that’s not being watched well, you’ll enter a room with many enemies to kill in that mech.

At the end another mech enters. Blast open his window and leave your current mech for the new one. Achievement should pop.

This achievement is obtainable in almost any mission where you fight a Cerberus Atlas, except for Priority Surkesh. Personally, I've gotten this achievement during Priority: The Citadel II and Priority: Cerberus Headquarters. In my most recent case I was using an Engineer Shepard, who prioritizes SMGs (and Pistols). I brought Garrus and Liara with me, and used a Geth Plasma SMG, do not let your squadmates use powers on their own, it's better if you have control of what powers they use and when. So the Atlas lands and you use the Overload power to deplete the Atlas shields (Engineer Shepard and Garrus should have it). After the Atlas shields are down you shoot it with your geth plasma smg, aim for the glass of the Atlas until it breaks, then keep shooting until the pilot of the Atlas is dead, after that, walk up to the atlas and get in and the achievement will pop.

Easy on the grissom academy mission. Towards the end you can hop into an empty mech, kill all the cerberus guys and a mech will be one of the last enemies to fight. I made sure I turned off the automatic squad powers usage so they didn't explode it. Focused my fire with my mech on the window, try not to use LT so it doesn't explode. The mech pilot died and I just hoped in it and the achievement popped. Hope this helps someone else, been trying to get this one all day.

I found I could not enter the Atlas until it was on level ground. Bring it forward off the stairs before killing the pilot to prevent having to redo the fight.

You will also fight Atlases several times during the Omega Invasion mission - this was important for me because I managed to destroy the one at Grissom Academy very quickly, before I checked this solution.

On Omega, there are two together in the open area fight when you need to turn the turrets back on, but this is a pretty busy fight and it may be difficult to focus on them. I was able to destroy one and disable the other, but when it was finally ready to hijack it was up against some of the cover and I couldn't actually enter it.

After that, there's a section after you go through the West Door from the command center where a large number of Rampart mechs come out from a door on the left - towards the end of that fight, there's a single Atlas that worked well for me. Just be sure to stay towards the left side of the area when you're disabling the Atlas, so it's on the bridge coming towards you - if you're on the right side, it may come up to the edge of the broken bridge and be unavailable to hijack.

I missed earlier attempts at this so I tried the Ex-Cerberus Scientists mission. The end of that mission has an engineer and an Atlas drop. For anyone who keeps finding that the mech explodes before you can enter, I believe it cannot be the last enemy in a group. Every time I tried this, I was saving the Atlas for last and the mech would explode. On this mission, I left the engineer untouched and as soons as I killed the pilot, I was able to enter the Atlas. Thanks for the guide.

@Faustus - that may be unique to that mission, maybe killing the last enemy triggers a cutscene? The Atlas was definitely the last enemy in the group where I did it on Omega and I had no trouble with it exploding.

I got this achievement on the Eden Prime mission. At the very end you’ll fight it and I was able to hijack it even though there weren’t any other enemies left.

Anyone else having the issue where it won't let you get in the mech? I get the press A to use prompt, but nothing happens. I've found this with multiple mechs throughout the story. Not sure what's wrong.

@British Legends - I had the same problem as you when I tried on Eden Prime. I believe my error may have been there not being any other enemies left. Going to give it a shot tomorrow at Grissom Academy.

@THE DEADLY DOG, I definitely had some enemies left when I attempted to hijack a mech near the end of a mission on Tuchanka. It still didn't let me get in. Had the same issue at the Academy. Let me know if you manage to get it to work toast

@British

Ended up doing the following. Took 3 restarts but the third time it let me in.

"Easiest way to get is on Grissom Academy. After you jump in the mech that’s not being watched well, you’ll enter a room with many enemies to kill in that mech."

I had to try this a couple of times on Eden Prime. First time it was the last enemy left and the button prompt was there but wouldn't work no matter what I did. Second time there was several enemies left and I was able to get in and pop the achievement. There is an autosave after that fight and when I reloaded the autosave the mech wasn't there at all so it may have something to do with does the game think the fight is still active or not.

Finally popped during the Omega dlc mission, on Insane.

I'm struggling with this at the moment, but its good to know there are mutiple chances to try this. I wonder if its difficulty related (since I'm on narrative difficulty). Maybe if I turn it up to normal as soon as I shoot the driver the mech won't explode.

I also got this on the citadel on insanity. Earlier Atlas mechs just kept blowing up on me.

I got this on Eden Prime on normal, shot the glass with my submachine gun until it shattered and the pilot died. Submachine gun was basic one you start with, no upgrades or mods, and I used disruptor ammo. Squad mate powers were off. Other enemies were still alive.

The earliest you can do it is Priority: Eden Prime at the very end of the mission when you have to wait for the stasis pod to activate. You can hide out in the house and just chip away at its shields and canopy while it can't really get to you inside. Even worked on insanity with just the Predator and a Vindicator, both without mods. Just remember to order your squadmates somewhere else so that they don't accidentally kill it (which isn't as much a problem on insanity though)

Will add that I spent a long time trying to get this in the first grissom academy fight and failed every time but got it first try at the end using the empty mech to shoot the second mech. Also I'm on Insanity in case anyone was wondering aboot difficulty.

Couldn't get this to work at all at Grisom, probably because I had Garrus and James with me doing too much damage.
Tried on N7:Cerberus Fighter Base, but I don't think it's possible there either. Actually had the cockpit glass broken with most of the armour still intact (guessing about 80%), shot the pilot once or twice and the mech just blew up. Seems to me like some other locations where I read that it's not possible to hijack the mech because the game just won't let you.
This is easily the worst achievement in the game... Hate it. Whoever thought this one up should never be allowed to make another achievement.

Edit: finally got it on priority the citadel, this time there were still other enemies around so maybe that was the key. Shot off its shield with my adac anti synthetic rifle, then just kept shooting the glass with viper sniper rifle. The one you encounter after crashing your csec car is in a nice tight corridor like environment where you can just stay on one end and the mech can't reach you.

To hijack a mech, you first need to take out the blue shield bar any way you'd like. After that, exclusively target the front glass area to break it so you can shoot the pilot directly and kill them before the mech explodes. After that, you should be able to approach the mech and enter it, unlocking the achievement. You can find mechs in the following missions: Grissom Academy: Emergency Evacuation, Priority: Eden Prime, Tuchanka: Bomb, Priority: The Citadel II, Arrae: Ex-Cerberus Scientists, Omega: Aria T'Loak, and Citadel Archives: Escape.
