You will be able to start researching projects once you recruit the salarian scientist. Just pick any research that fits your needs and the achievement will pop-up. If you don't have materials needed, more will be acquired during missions and through planet scan.
The, Pants, Party
After recruiting Mordin, speak with him on the Normandy to see a list of upgrades you can purchase. You will need materials found in lootable crates during missions or found by scanning planets. Once you have enough resources, purchase any upgrade to unlock this achievement.
