How to unlock the Assault Rifle Expert achievement in Mass Effect - Definitive Guide
The assault rifle is probably going to be the weapon you use the most throughout the game. Simply keep constantly upgrading and equipping new more powerful rifles and you will eventually get this, also use the Overkill skill to help in aiming and killing enemies faster. The kills will carry on multiple play throughs if you don't get it the first time around.
Also you MUST get the killing shot, your teammates kills don't count.

No, with the normal playing is fine, I just got it, and I`m just 8hrs in the game, and I let my squad shoot too, maybe if you want to earn all weapons achievements in 1 play you can make your squad go to cover....

Using Overkill also generates less heat allowing you to be trigger happy. Woohooooo!

Play survival and all the other game types in the DLC and all the kills you get there will contribute to your weapon kills. Just make sure you are the one that finishes them off as it wont count if an ally does.
Note: you do not have to be trained in the weapon to get this achievement, it just means it is less accurate.

I'm currently going through the game for the first time and I have choose to be an Infiltrator, which means I am 'untrained' with Assault Rifles...
can I still get the achievement whilst being untrained with Assault Rifles?

Disclaimer: Kills carry over across all saves, and you don't have to save for them to count. This solution is for people who just want to grind the achievement as quickly as possible, even if untrained in Assault Rifles. You must have command of the Normandy before you can follow this solution.
Killing friendly critters counts towards your kills. Go to the planet Eletania (in the Hercules system of Attican Beta) where you will find several colonies of little monkey aliens. Simply drive up to one in the Mako, save your game, and shoot each of the monkeys with your assault rifle of choice. When they're all dead, reload your save and repeat.
There are about ten monkeys in each colony, so you'll need to do this fifteen times at most. Note that there are poisonous toxins in the atmosphere that will eventually kill you, but you should be able to get all the monkeys before then.

Nice find! Worked like a charm for another profile I'm working on. Thanks for sharing!

Just to ad to this.. I used the Explosive rounds in my rifle, and often a single shot would take out 3 or 4 monkeys (explosive force +500%) and these kills appeared to be included.. granted my Sheppard was at level 50 before i started to grind this one..

This trophy requires you to register 150 kills with your Assault Rifle.
If you near the end of the game and find that you don't have this achievement, there are several methods in which you can attain it without another playthrough, some of which are listed below:
1) Reload a previous save and find a mission that has a lot of enemies - the game registers kills outwith your save, so you can reload the mission over and over.
2) Create a new character, make a new save when you first exit the Normandy and play Eden Prime, reloading your save when you reach the Conduit (preferably utilising a Soldier for this method).
3) Mission: UNC: Lost Module - Visit the planet Eletania (Attican Beta Cluster/Hercules System). Upon entering the Hercules system Shepard will be given a mission by Admiral Hackett. When you touch down on the planet, investigate the downed probe (marked on your map) - this will cause several colonies of Pyjak ("Space Monkeys") to appear. Save your game, clear the colonies with your weapon of choice and reload. Repeat this until the achievement pops.
*Be aware that Eletania has a Level 1 Toxic Hazard - take necessary precaution!*

See "Pistol Expert" for more info.
Only Soldiers can train to use Assault Rifles, but some of the better ones are viable for use by other classes. Anyone but the Soldier is going to need to focus on improving accuracy if they want to hit enemies, but you must also worry about it overheating. Assault Rifles can overheat very quickly if you don't pay attention, so always make sure it has time to cool down so you don't have to wait.
