How to unlock the Long Service Medal achievement in Mass Effect - Definitive Guide

Mass Effect's story is long and can be challenging on the higher difficulties. The side quests are not needed for this achievement. You are looking at dozens of hours of time so make sure that you go for other achievements while on each playthrough.

For instance, insanity unlocks after beating it on hardcore so play hardcore first playthrough and insanity the next. Also, you can use the same character from the first playthrough to make it easier for you. One playthrough can be renegade and the other be paragon.

Make sure that you save a lot because you can forget to save and lose forty-five minutes of game time.

Great tips! I agree that you want to make the playthroughs "count," so the player has some tough decisions to make. If you use different characters, this can help the ability achievements come naturally--but this won't get you to level 60. Personally, I'm using one character for 3 playthroughs (the 2nd and 3rd being Hardcore and Insanity), and two other characters on Casual difficulty for their specific ability skillsets. I'll finish all campaigns for carryover into Mass Effect 2 and 3.

Note to anyone confused by this solution: You can't play hardcore for the first playthrough like the solution says because it only unlocks after beating the game once on another difficulty.

For this achievement all you need to do is complete the game twice. You don't need to do it on the same difficulty, you don't need to do the side quests, just complete the game 2 times and you will unlock this once you finish it for your second time.

do you do the same game, or can you do two separate games? (diffferent settings, different race, different skills)

Yeah, I did it on two different careers, one was a vanguard, the other an Adept

Its actually smarter if you change the difficult to gain other achievements

Best thing to do is change the difficulty for you second playthrough to hardcore. This way you unlock 2 achievements at the same time: Long service medal and Distinguised combat medal.

Good guide, but you should probably add that it can be with multiple "careers" (characters), just to clear up any confusion at a glance.

Also, you need 2 playthroughs to reach level 60 when you first play the game.

I accidentally discovered a shortcut to this one. I was trying to get an Ally trophy that I missed the first time I completed the game, so I loaded a game just after Feros. When I defeated Saren/Sovereign this trophy popped! How unexpected!

After finishing your Casual, or any play through, select new career and existing ID. Make sure to change the settings in the main menu, difficulty to Hardcore.

WARNING: Whe you start the game in the Normandy, check the setting again and make sure it is set to Hardcore to get these at the same time! If you land on Eden Prime and it wasn't set right, you will not get the achievement for Hardcore.
