How to unlock the Soldier Ally achievement in Mass Effect - Definitive Guide

You get the soldier, Ashley, from the start. Keep her in your party to do all the missions and about 40-45 assignments. You should unlock this achievements even before finishing the playthrough since both Ashley and Kaiden are in your party during which you have already done several missions before picking up other potential party members.

For missions see http://masseffect.wikia.com/wiki/Missions. For assignments, see http://masseffect.wikia.com/wiki/Assignments.

Because Ashley is a soldier class with no biotic or tech abilities you'll want to balance your party out. You should go for this achievement when you're playing either as a biotic or tech (or mix) class yourself. Balance our your party with a tech or biotic (or mix) different from yourself.

*** Spoiler Alert ***

Toward the end of Virmire you'll need to make a choice to save either Ashley or Kaiden, the two humans originally in your party. Choose Ashley because you cannot save both.

I think I'm going to have the same issue as zacattack5000. I'm doing as many side missions as I can between each main mission, hoping I'll still be able to get them both.

Verified that you can get the achievements for both Kaiden and Ashley in one playthrough. After rescuing Liara, I did every possible side mission available before initiating any other main story missions. During the course of Noveria, I got the Sentinel Ally, Soldier Ally and Paragon achievements. Sweet!

To get them before Virmire, you must complete both Pinnacle Station and Bring Down the Sky, AND you must complete all collection assignments on a land world, not a survey, with the appropriate party members.

I just got the achievement together with the one from Tali before starting Virmire. I don't have the Pinnacle Station DLC. The tricky thing with the number of assignments is probably that some assignments are marked completed when you return to the Normandy and speak to whoever over the communications channel. At that point you don't have anyone in your party and it maybe doesn't count towards the achievement.

Like someone said, you cannot do kaiden and ashley at the same time.

funny how the TA ration for this achievement is much lower than the one for saving kaiden.
wonder why so many people chose Ashley over him ;)

Does anyone know why this (and all the other ally achievements) is marked as buggy?

I believe it's possible to get the achievement for both kaiden and Ashley in the same playthrough, provided you complete as many side missions as possible, complete Liara's recruitment, Feros, and Noveria before going to Virmire. I am going for this achievement now (my very last for the game) and I just finished the achievements for Kaiden and Garrus, and I got the achievement before going to Virmire. I forgot that Virmire requires a sacrifice on this playthrough and am now forced to save Ashley for the save I'll be imported.

Do all the citadel sidequests except scan the keepers, do all unc ones, do bring down the sky and it's sidequest, do all feros and noveria ones, do all post feros ones, do the first post noveria one and it will pop before virmire.

actually you get get both achievements. Just make a save right before where you have to make the decision on who to save. Then reload the save. You got what, a hour and half tops of playing from that point till the end of the game. Be a man and suck it up.

I confirm that it is possible to get the Ashley and Kaiden achievements in the same playthrough. I always selected both, the achievement for Kaiden popped in a sidequest before I got to Virmine (even before the Completionist achiev.). I made him die on that planet, and my Ashley achievement popped during a sidequest when I was locked down on the Citadel. I don't know why I didn't get both at the same time. But it is possible, as long as you do not use anyone else.

According to Mass Effect Wiki, you unlock this achievement by completing 45 assignments with Ashley out of the disc's 73. Each DLC adds 3 to that list, making for a max of 79.

1) You do not need the character in your party to count toward your total, you just need her there when the assignment is marked "completed"
2) YES, DLC assignments can count, and are much easier than some in game assignments.
3) I suggest using Kaiden or Tali as your extra character. Both require 45 assignments complete for their achievement, so you can kill two birds with one stone.
4) When you earn this, all characters damage reduction improves by 10%

Not when the assignment is taken but when it's completed.

You get Ashley very early in the game, Eden Prime to be exact. This achievement requires you to complete 15 main story missions and 35 assignments or side quests if you will with the soldier class Ashley in your party. You can get this before the final planet Virmire by doing the majority of all assignments, or you can do a few less and get it on Virmire.

NOTE********** If you still haven't gotten it by time you have to make a choice about your party on Virmire, you'll have to save Ashley in order to get it.

I found this site very helpful if you can't figure out where to pick up some of the smaller missions, or if you get stuck on something

I ended up doing the main missions up to right before Virmire (15 missions). I did 51 assignments when this finally popped.

I visited every star system possible to pick up every assignment and did every assignment on the Citadel. I kept Ashley in my party for all missions/assignments.

Soldier Ally, Ashley, is the recruit you get at the beginning of the Prologue, Eden Prime.

I got the achievement by completing 46 Missions/Assignments and didn't have to complete the Noveria mission to save Ashley, i only got to Feros and to the point where i give some guy Downloaded Data on an OSD (in game memory unit like a USB Stick) and the achievement popped right there and then.

I done as much Assignments as i could possible get and i searched for more but i have the link to help you with these assignments that i found extremely helpful!

Link: http://masseffect.wikia.com/wiki/Assignments

NOTE: I did complete the assignments/missions in both DLC and i also have guides on Pinnacle Station if you need help with those also!

Good Luck as this one and the others are a pain to get :)
Thank you for any positive votes and leave a comment if you are going to Negative vote please. Hope This Helps!

Use Ashley for every mission and assignment that you go on. You have to complete 45 assignments and most of the missions with her.

See completionist achievement for extra info. This achievement is for Ashley.

Do A LOT of side quests. Don't worry if you get one ally first and later the other.  You can get two per playthrough only. It is possible to get these achievements even before going to Ilos if you complete every possible side quest and all main missions. Bring Down the Sky DLC will also help.

Refer to this thread for some insight to these achievements.

Basic plan of attack for ally achievements:

  • Complete Eden Prime
  • Go to Citadel, talk to Council
  • Find Harkin (Chora's Den), Garrus (Med Clinic) and Wrex (C-Sec)
  • Take care of Fist (do not pick up his OSD!)
  • Rescue Tali in the Wards Access
  • Talk to Council, become Spectre
  • Head to Therum and rescue Liara

From here, you will have all the allies. Pick the two you want to use and use them for EVERYTHING. If you don't have an ally with decryption and need them to unlock a quest by hacking a computer, switch them in to receive the quest, then immediately go back and switch them out.

Now with your two allies:

  • Complete any possible Citadel assignment
  • Complete any random space assignments (check this list and see which ones can be acquired simply by visiting a system or planet)
  • Complete Bring Down the Sky missions (400MSP off the marketplace)
  • Complete Noveria (do all assignments BEFORE leaving the arrival site)
  • Complete Feros (do all assignments BEFORE leaving the arrival site)
  • Go back to the Citadel and complete any assignments you started on Noveria/Feros
  • Complete Virmire (do not kill Wrex!)
  • Back to the Citadel once more

You should have the achievements by now, but if you don't, head to Ilos and finish out the game. Many people got a few of the achievements (mainly Liara) at the very last mission.

YOU DO NOT HAVE TO DO ANY COLLECTION ASSIGNMENTS FOR THESE ACHIEVEMENTS! -- These missions take forever, and they will help, but they are 100% not required to get ANY of the achievements, even Liara.
