How to unlock the Maximum Payne achievement in Max Payne 3 - Definitive Guide

*Make sure you make a new story instead of using chapter select, otherwise the achievement will not pop!

Old School Difficulty is basically a hard difficulty without last stand option. This unlocks after beating the game on hard difficulty. In this mode, instead of going into last stand and giving yourself a chance to shoot the enemy who killed you, you will simply die.

I recommend you play this before hardcore is it may help prepare for it a bit.

Peek around corners and get headshots! Use left and right on the Dpad to reposition yourself for easy corner peeking.

Use bullet-time often when 2-3 enemies are around.

You can use painkillers while in bullet-time and mid dive!

This mode is honestly not as hard as people make it out to be, just make sure to keep your life up and be careful.

Good luck

PS YOU MUST SELECT FREE AIM

Do you need to have free aim on to do this, or can you put soft or hard lock on and still get the achievement?

once u find all of the parts for a gun, it automatically replaces the normal version of that gun. golden guns give a boost to ammo in a clip as well as damage

Marky; If I played this exactly as I played NYMH, will I piss through it? I've heard various reports on the exact difficulty of this. Some say it is Medium, some say Hard.

I didn't get the Hard difficulty achievement because of that but the "Old School" difficulty is now unlocked. Does someone know if I ginish the game in Old School, will I get the "Hard" achievement?

Repeat plays on this game would be do much more enjoyable if it weren't for the unskippable cut scenes. Just starting my 3rd game run on this mode now.

@Capatonio, I agree, that is very much bullsh*t. I understand 2 playthroughs, the first on an easier difficulty to unlock the 2 harder difficulties, but I don't understand why you would have to play through on multiple difficulty levels if you've already beaten the game on the hardest setting. You unlock the Medium and Hard achievements if you beat it on Hard first but if you beat it on Old School you don't unlock the Hardcore achievement. That makes no sense.

That's like saying you have to win the Super Bowl before you play in the divisional playoff and won't get the trophy (no pun intended) until you win your division after already becoming champions of the league. smh.

hardcore and old school arent based on difficulty, there have different mechanics, while yes i agree with you, they still arent based on difficulty, but are kinda separate

Might be worth adding that compared to playing on hard, bullet time builds up very quickly on old school.

@Chungjai , I read your comment about completing the game on old school the switching to hardcore. I can confirm that after the update this no longer works. You have to play hardcore separately to unlock its achievement.

When you say golden guns count, does that mean you can or cannot use them? I didn't know they were any different from regular weapons, and am now halfway through the game on Old School mode. Want to know if I should restart with golden guns turned off or if it doesn't matter :(

Once the Old School achievement pops, immediately exit to dashboard and load up the game again. Continue with the story mode but change the difficulty setting to Hardcore instead. Complete the final segment once again and this time the Hardcore achievement will pop as well as any stacked achievements such as Medium and Hard. Credit for this solution goes to XmaniaX ... probably the single most useful tip for the entire game.

Markyshizzle your solution is just fine, but I would add one thing. I realize that the first comment to your solution addresses the question about whether or not free aim can be used, but not everyone (including MYSELF) reads the comments. I personally just completed a run-through on Old School but I changed it to soft aim and was aghast when the achievement didn't pop. I then read through the comments herein and saw that free aim was a necessity. Even though it is a fun game to play I am really dreading going through the whole thing again for this achievement, especially since I can't skip some truly long cut scenes. So my suggestion would be to add a comment to your solution which states that not only do you have to start a new game on Old School difficulty, but Free Aim must be selected.

Here is a link to a full video walkthrough of the game on Hardcore with free aim, no golden guns, and full commentary. It should help for any of the difficulties that aren't timed - just bear in mind you will not be able to rely on the painkiller revive. Everything else should stand up.

Hope it helps.

You should probably note in your soluton that you won't unlock the Maximum Payne achievement by beating Hardcore difficulty.

I started this difficulty after finishing the game on hard and even after a year of not playing I found it strangely easy compared with the lower difficulty settings.

The loss of 'Last man standing' was actually a good thing in my mind, as it meant I could hold on to my pain pills instead of losing them because a goon caught me unaware.

Don't worry about dying
The game is very forgiving with it's mid chapter checkpoints (most of the time) plus, you'll learn where the enemies like to go and there tactics.
If you die on the same part multiple times, the game will give you pain pills as a helping hand!

Hide around corners!
Stand behind walls and other tall objects instead of pressing X to take cover and shot around/through the thing you're behind.
In most shooter, if your gun is blocked by something your bullets will be blocked too. NOT IN THIS GAME! Your bullets will land where the crosshair is aiming, so hide behind something, aim at an enemy and you will be able to hit him regardless of if your gun is in the wall. This will save you a lot of frustration.
Note:- Taking cover is most effective and a must on hip high cover e.g. under windows, planters.

Turn on golden gun effects
If you have collected the golden gun parts I recommend enabling the Golden gun effects in the settings menu. Golden guns have 50% larger magazines than standard guns. Most rifles in the game have a 30 round mag with GG enabled it goes up to 45 rounds, simply really.

Always look for pills
I know it's obvious but look for pain pills in every room, it could save your life!

Dual wield different guns
Dual wielding pistols is classic max payne and badass but it's also wasteful. Each weapon type has it's only pool of ammunition; Pistols, SMGs, LMGs, Rifles, Shotguns, Magnums and snipers. Using two of the same type of Akimbo guns burns through ammo twice as fast. Sticking with a pistol and SMG worked well for me.
Note:- Desert Eagle uses a separate ammo pool to pistols and magnums, I think it's classed as a special weapon so it has limited ammo like the grenade launcher and LAW rocket.

Be patient
This is a fantastic game, in all respects. It's challenging not impossible, so stick with it and have fun.

Under no circumstances, when playing in the old school, do not change the aiming settings throughout the entire game, which you chose with these and play if you change the settings during the game, you will not be given a trophy at the end, you will have to replay the entire game from the beginning.

In fact, when you start the story at an above-average level, they immediately write that achievements will not be counted if aim assist is turned on (not free aim). Apparently not everyone reads it.

The game does not give any concessions to the player, checkpoints are quite far from each other, there is no last chance, max dies with a couple of bullets, enemies are often killed with headshots, in the end every enemy is in armor. So we kill enemies more often from around corners, If possible, use time dilation, monitor your health and at 80%, eat ascorbic acid)

I completed the game in old school with a hard grip from the very beginning to the end without changing the aiming method, but they still didn’t give me the trophy. I didn’t even swear, I almost cried) It seems that they don’t give the trophy because of the tight grip..

I advise you to go through Oldschool after Hardcore. This mode is much easier in terms of damage than Hardcore. The first 9 chapters will fly by very easily, then enemies will start hitting you more often. It is more convenient to shoot from automatic pistols from cover. Also, don’t rush to swallow pills, especially at the beginning of firefights, it’s better to die and be reborn with full health. By the way, very few tablets were used and at the end of the missions there were always plenty of them left.

I completed the old school in just one sitting, in fact, without the moronic “last chance” it was even easier.
And don’t listen to advice that you should sit in shelters; you can count such places in the entire game on one hand. To survive in Max Payne 3 you need to be always on the move, at least the enemies won't hit you with laser precision.
Never sit in cover, try to run forward and improvise. Carefully study the situation for explosive containers; in almost every difficult place in the game there is a gas cylinder hidden.
Never start an attack with a jump in slow motion, unless you are sure that you can take out all the targets in one move (count, no more than three); it is better to run out in slow motion and measure the entire scale, and when it is already coming to an end, you can safely jump, this saves a lot of bullet time
Remember that Max feels great in close combat, there are situations when enemies come towards you with a small gap, run out in slow motion and kill the one at range, then kick the one near you.
Also, to save on deceleration, it is worth turning it on when you have almost emerged from cover, and not before the start of the maneuver.
Also use dual weapons; in my subjective opinion, dual left-handers are the most powerful and accurate.
After each battle, carefully inspect the environment, it’s not uncommon to find hidden painkillers; during my game, my number rarely fell below three, or even reached 7.
Use painkillers if your health has dropped below half, there is no need to tempt fate, especially since one serving is not even enough to be 100% healthy.
For those who are not used to shooting with lower shifts, like me, just run to the menu and change them to upper ones, there is a special option.

If there are few lives left, restart the checkpoint, and you will restore your life, and you won’t waste tablets.

Another tip: don’t take 2 Uzis or 2 identical pistols - the cartridges will run out faster, it’s better to leave the pistol in one hand and the Uzi in the other, so you will at least have a slight advantage with cartridges in this hell)
