How to unlock the Half the Sponge He Used to Be achievement in Mega Man X Legacy Collection - Definitive Guide

For this you need Overdrive Ostrich's weapon, the Sonic Slicer. Usually I go for Wire Sponge first when I start X2, so this achievement might be best saved for the Boss Select part of the Final Fortress.

Equip the Sonic Slicer when facing W. Sponge and just pelt him with it (Don't bother charging the weapon up)- it kills his "weeds" in one hit and it can stop his "Shield" with one strike and allow you to hit him with more shots. When he dies, he'll be cut in half in a short animation before he starts exploding.

Note: this can be done in the Boss Select area of the X-Hunter Base, but NOT in X Challenge mode!

Maybe it can be added that it does NOT work with the charged up version of the Sonic Slicer. At least for me this didn't do the trick.

Robster80 has a great solution! I just wanted to add a password for anyone looking to shortcut this achievement. The following password has all hearts, tanks, and all other bosses beaten making the stage and boss fight a little easier. Remember to use sonic slicer!

Requirements: Beat Overdrive Ostrich

You need the final blow to come from Overdrive Ostrich's boomerang weapon

The following password will give you all parts, sub-tanks, and heart tanks, as well as the other seven Mavericks defeated, leaving just Wire Sponge.

Use the Sonic Slicer earned from Overdrive Ostrich on Wire Sponge. On the finishing hit with the Sonic Slicer, Wire Sponge will get cut in half. The regular Sonic Slicer works, you do not need to charge it.


If you need to do just this, use this password to go directly to Wire Sponge, with all other items.
