How to unlock the Truly Human achievement in METAL GEAR RISING: REVENGEANCE - Definitive Guide

This is my guide how to defeat Sundowner boss on Hard difficulty without taking any damage. Found this video useful? Then hit the 'Like' button and show your support.

Equipment needed for this fight

Homing missile (sub weapon)
Pincers (unique weapon)
Murasama blade (main weapon)

In first phase Sundowner dashes with his shield deployed to ram Raiden. You need to parry this move to trigger an interactive sequence. Win this by pressing X or Y on Xbox or Square or Circle on PS3 repeatedly, and gain the chance to sever up two shields. But leave his shield untouched and focus on shooting the Hammerhead with homing missile. After that charge Pincers by holding Y and release to do an attack. When Sundowner hide behind the shield. Charge pincers and hit him again as he drops that shield. Repeat this until his health drop to 10% to start next phase.

Once you have lowered Sundowner's health to 10% Raiden rides a Slider.
Though it can seem overhelming at first, this Slider sequence is actually extremely easy to complete without injury. The solution is: do not touch the left stick. If you remain in orginal position until the end, pressing a X button repeatedly to fire, automatically destroy or avoid all obstacles.

On the end of the ride slice the roof at least once while in Blade mode, then press Y+B/ Triangle+Circle to dodge the missiles. Final step is to slice Sundowner in Blade mode.

Slider sequence can be repeated if damage was received.

A little tip for the Slider sequence: go in the bottom left corner and quickly press LB/RB for shoot missles: destroy everything. no damages. easy peasy :3

Amazing solution. Once you shoot the chopper down, don't forget to add that when Sundowner charges you with either the red shield or sword attack to dodge them with Left or Right + X + A and then hold down Y to charge your Pincers then let go for an even more devastating variation of the attack.

Indeed an amazing solution, worked like a charm. It's totally unrelated to your strategy, and it's a well known issue, but it's worth mentioning anyway. For me, the no damage rank (credited at the end of the fight) glitched, i.e. no achievement. I had to replay the whole level after having uninstalled the title update.

It didn't happen with Mistral and Sam, so it looks like the bug it's totally random.

(and no, I didn't go into the "customize" tab at any moment during the fight, or even during the chapter, for those who are wondering).

EASY SUNDOWNER WIN - NO DAMAGE - HARD OR HIGHER DIFFICULTY

Just did this last night on my Very Hard Playthrough, and although my tactic is cheap, it will get the job done while also giving you the combo required to acquire the S Rank (can be done on your Stormbringer playthrough).

WHAT YOU WILL NEED:
Infinite Wig B
Homing Missiles

WHAT WILL MAKE THIS EVEN QUICKER (but not required):
Custom Body Red
Sam's Blade

For the fight itself, I will break this down as simply as possible. Each step cooresponds to what Sundowner will most likely do during the fight. Unfortunately he does change things up once in a while, but for the most part he has a standard set of moves he does, so this does take a bit of luck (but not much). If you can nail this method, with Sundowner cooperating, you can have him dead within a couple of minutes. wink

FIGHT BEGINS!

Step 1: Sundowner charges you with his plates out, and a chopper behind him.

Here you want to do one of two things:
- Jump over him (risky if not timed appropriately, as his hit box is crazy big on that move)
- Offensive Defensive (cn_A+cn_X+cn_LSu/cn_LSd/cn_LSl/cn_LSr). This move is not as risky if you know what you are doing. Honestly, I would hesistate going backwards as much (simply because, again, the massive hit box) but that move gives you something invaluable in this game: invinicbility frames.

Once that step is completed, and you have successfully avoided the QTE, deal with the chopper with your homing missile. You do not need to aim the weapon, just face the chopper and tap cn_LB. The rocket will fire and take out the chopper, and save you time.

Step 2: Sundowner will, most likely, be facing you with his shield plates up.

Here you need to get him airborne (Facing the enemy it is cn_LSu+cn_LSu+cn_X). This is difficult to do when he has his shields up, so you can either run behind him (his back is vulnerable, and he will drop his guard once you start attacking) or you can do offensive defensive which will drop his shields.

Once his shields are down, simply get him airborne. Once that lands, jump up with him and initiate Blade Mode (cn_LT) and hack away at him in slow motion. You will juggle him indefinately, hacking away at his life while also building a combo that will give you the S Rank with ease. Once his life gets low enough, the cutscene will initiate.

Step 3: Complete the elevator and QTE section.

Fairly straight foward - you will be on a hijacked glider-enemy thingy flying up an elevator shaft. Spam the crap out of the cn_X button in one of the lower corners (doesn't matter which one) and you will be fine. Then blade mode your way back outside, complete the QTE (cn_Y+cn_B), and then hack Sundowner to bits.

That is it - three easy steps, and you are done in a matter of minutes. You bypass all of the crap "cutting-off-his-extra-limbs" garbage, rack up a decent combo (I had one of over 350!) only deal with one chopper (those are what make the fight rough more than anything) and take home this achievement. It is not the most elegant method, I will admit, but it certainly gets the job done. wink

Truly Human 30G
Defeat Sundowner without taking any damage on Hard difficulty or above.

This is my guide to how I did it pretty quickly.

At the beginning of this battle he'll most likely shield charge you. immediately run to the right and jump to avoid it. as soon as you touch back down immediately go into "ripper mode" and change your unique weapon to the pincers (his weapon). right here you can charge up by holding down Y and release to do an attack that usually does 2 thrusts forward and will usually knock him down. You can do this move 3 times in a row! his health will fall significantly.

Now we have to take a break and take care of the chopper. wait until you can attack it all the while you should be ninja running around the boss to make sure missiles dont hit you. if you are far away from the boss he just likes to walk around with his shield in front of his face. so he's not a problem. soon as chopper is in position just jump in the air and press Y to do a downward attack. 1 hit KO. remember you're still in "ripper mode".

Now we can go back to the battle. bait him until he opens his shield. as SOON as he drops that shield start charging up the Y attack. however, now he is not falling to the ground and he puts up his shield after every successful Y attack. just back away, and wait for him to put up the shield again. then bait him. rinse and repeat.

take a breather if you took no damage and triggered the cut scene because now we have a checkpoint!!! time to start our ascent back up to the top!

for the lucky few this shouldn't be a problem. for the rest of us this could prove annoying to get to the top without taking damage. i kept trying and trying and to no avail couldn't get there. so i thought i should just always concentrate on being in the middle of the elevator shaft the whole time whenever i could. did it my first try with this tactic. zandatsu the wall and now we just have to finish him off!

he will throw missiles at you. press Y + B when prompted to dodge. now he jumps and you will be prompted to zandatsu him (my favorite execution on an enemy).

congratulations the achievement should pop along with a nice "S" rank most likely!

i hope this helps you guys!

Can you checkpoint restart if you get hit by anything during the flying part?

@Ninja Scroll there are probably several different strategies out on YouTube but I don't have the luxury of a capture card. Anyone can simply post a video onto a solution page pretty easily.

@Teh Author YES

@Deathsangelz yes i did. it wasn't an issue with the charged up Y attack that did 2 thrusts because I would just back away after he put his shield up and then run back to him to get him to open himself up.

My strat goes like this laugh

Parry his shield charge at the beginning then wait for him to go into shield mode so you can stinger the chopper
Then use his sword in ripper mode but dont charge it just tap (Y) then jump cancel the animation

(especially effective if it looks like hes going to put his shield up as you will cancel the attack)
With some luck each hit should knock him over i manage to get 6 or so in before he could do anything.
Each hit does about 10% i believe & that was on revengeance.

Since nobody else has mentioned it you can press (X) to shoot missiles when your on the slider wink

@Raezie - That is the way i do, maybe there's no need to make a video as u explained very well bud but u need to make a little combo at some point to get rank S, otherwise it will give u an A.

Yeah if you do it that way you will need to get a 50 hit combo, the amount of times i got 9800 points is a joke!

People are having a hard time with the new title update to the game. Its causing the battle rankings to fluctuate very randomly. In most cases it makes the NO DAMAGE bonus not appear at the end of the battle. Also, it can affect the Time the battle was finished as well. It doesn't always happen, but the majority of people have found that the title update was causing this and it screws up many chapters worth of trying to S rank every battle.

I've done this battle repeatedly without taking any damage and getting the bonus and no achievement, WTF?

Also my no shield technique involves blocking his first couple attacks and stun locking him with double tap foward Y move. You can take him out in about 15 seconds.

I think the new title update may be screwing everything up. Gamers have been reporting this as a giant bug. It's possible to delete the title update and play offline to obtain it easier. Unfortunately, I don't know why they haven't fixed this stupid mistake.

I quit my Monsoon fight on Revengeance difficulty because of this :/

My strategie its totally different and ultra easy but i'll just record when i go to my revengeance playthrought and its very annoying to tipe long strategies.

be careful with checkpoints in his fight, i got him to his second form without shields, and it gave me a checkpoint, he killed me almost instantly as i didn't know how to dodge his attack, hit restart assuming it'd be the beginning, like the checkpoint in monsoons battle is so far in. But i beat the rest of the battle with 0 damage, restarted the flying section a few times and no damage just wouldn't show up....

So i am going to have to get to him, back up the save on cloud and use that, in case it screws me over again with the checkpoints in the fight.

Not sure why my 0 dmg didn't count, i had 200% at the end, didn't use 1 healing item, when it restarted the checkpoint of his 2nd form, i saw no chopper, so i quickly killed him with his pincer weapons. Might want to suggest putting the "back it up on cloud once you get to the boss fight, especially so if you want to S rank the entire chapter", after that annoying mech right near the start that you can't even get near.

So i neither got my achievement OR S rank for the entire chapter, for some reason it screwed me out of it. Need to re-do the entire thing and will no damage the entire battle with no checkpoints.

Depending on how you approach this fight, it can be even easier than the Mistral battle, or it can be a nightmare. As with every other silver trophy for the no damage boss battle-thon, you need to play this on Hard difficulty or above AND take him down before he can land a hit with those pincers of his.

Oh, and there are helicopters, because this guy is a cheater. roll

Just in case anyone is wondering, Sundowner is at the end of File R-04.

WHAT YOU WILL NEED TO BEAT SUNDOWNER WITHOUT TAKING DAMAGE:
1. A backup save (its just a good habit wink)
2. Homing Missiles (at least 2)
3. A decent understanding of the parry system
4. Timing

WHAT WILL NET YOU THIS TROPHY WITH EASE (not exactly necessary):
1. Infinite Wig B (Unlimited Ripper Mode)
2. A maxed Pincer Blades
3. Custom Body Red

So, I am hoping at this point if you are playing on hard that you have at least a basic understanding of the parry system. It is actually crucial for a few fights, so if you are having difficulty with it, I suggest practicing with Monsoon on R-03 - a few rounds with that jackass and you will graduate from "I have no idea what I am doing with this parry defend crap" to "Oh, so THAT is how you do it correctly!" wink

Now, I am going to explain my method to beat this guy without an issue, and this method does not utilize what the game wants you to do. Seriously, don't listen to the game, and don't follow it's demands ESPECIALLY for initiating blade mode. You don't need to with this guy (unless you are on Revengeance going for Stormbringer, but that is for another day in another solution wink).

The game is going to want you to chop off all his shield thingies that he uses to protect himself - DON'T. LEAVE THEM ALONE. LET HIM HAVE THEM.

When Sundowner has his shields in place, he is EXTREMELY predictable. As in he does 2, maybe 3 moves tops. And every move is done from distance, so even if you suck at parry, you have more than enough time to get yourself situated.

MY METHOD:

Although I said above that there are a few items not necessary to take this guy down, I am hoping you have the pincer blades already. They don't need to be maxed, but it would certainly help. Have them equipped. Also, have your homing missiles equipped as well.

I had Wig B for Unlimited Ripper, but that just reduced the overall time, so it is not necessary.

STEP 1: At the start of the fight, 9 times out of 10 Sundowner will charge you with his shield-thingies: block it and complete the button prompt. The game will want you to use blade mode and chop a few sections of his shield off. As I said before, don't do this. Seriously, don't.

STEP 2: Ninja Run towards that damn helicopter that will ruin your day with a single bullet angry. When you see an opening, take it out with the missile. Don't worry too much about Sundowner, he is dumb as a brick and slow as hell. 90% of the time he will be inching towards you with his precious shields protecting his fragile face laugh.

STEP 3: Get behind Sundowner, but not to close to him. Charge your Pincers. If you are not familiar with this weapon, it has some serious reach. Wait for Sundowner to turn and face you with his shields retracted. Slam him with his own weapon and send him flying. You will take a really nice chunk of his life.

STEP 4: Stay about mid distance from Sundowner. This way, you are not wasting time with the QTE he can make you do (his initial attack). A majority of the time he will dash at you with his pincers. Block it. After that he tends do put his shields back up.

STEP 5: Repeat Steps 3 & 4 until he gets to ~10% health. You will initiate a cutscene where Raiden is falling from the building, grabbing a slider, and then going back up from inside. BE AWARE OF YOUR HEALTH. If you see that you have taken damage, either from the copter or Sundowner, press start and choose the "Restart" option. When you are in the building flying upwards, a checkpoint will be initiated, so if you took damage it will save. Hopefully you made a back up save.

STEP 6: While you are on the slider, get Raiden in the bottom right corner, and spam the crap out of the slider's missiles (R1). That will take care of any debris, and enemies, falling towards you. If you get hit here, restart from the checkpoint.

STEP 7: Once you are out of building, complete the QTE, and then hack Sundowner into little bits.

Unlike the other enemies in this game, Sundowner will not get annoyingly unpredictable as you progress through the fight - the only way he will get to be a pain is if you take off all 6 of his shields. THEN he can be a devastating brute. With his shields, he is ridiculously easy to beat without taking a hit from him.

However the helicopters are a different story altogether. THEY are unpredictable. You need to take care of them as you see them BEFORE they can fire a shot, and with Sundowner not all raged up on roids, they are really not that difficult to manage. 1 homing missile will drop them.

If you took care of the heli in the beginning, be aware that another will show up somewhere between 30 and 45 seconds. You will know when you see it due to the spotlight it shines down on you.

This is one of the easiest battles to do with no damage, usually I would explain how to do it on First and Second playthroughs BUT this is almost identical on each one, especially since you unlock the Staff by this point anyway.

Phase 1: This is going to be pretty much all his health, he's much easier in this state. He will start off by charging at you, if you Parry this you'll enter a small button mashing sequence followed by a Blade Mode part, you can opt to cut off his panels but it doesn't matter as you wont be cutting them all off anyway. Pull out the Stinger while he's stunned and shoot the Helicopter, it will be you're best opportunity to do it and it wont respawn by the time you're done, you'll want to keep jumping behind him and unleashing the Staff attacks while Parrying his attack where he will try to hit behind himself, after a while he will move, when he does wait for him to put his armour up and jump behind him, rinse and repeat, you may want to activate Ripper Mode a bunch too in order to deal more damage.

Phase 2: Once essentially "defeated" you'll have a small sequence where you're riding a Slider, stick to a corner (Bottom-Left or Bottom-Right) and spam as this will destroy all obstacles, once you reach the top you'll have to use Blade Mode to cut your way through followed by a small Quick Time event.

I recommend doing it on New Game + with Infinite Wig B equipped that you get after getting 20 left hands and beating the game.

Infinite Wig B gives you infinite supply of fuel-cell energy, meaning you can have Ripper Mode turned on forever. But that also mean that you can turn on and off the Ripper Mode as many times as you want. Now here's the deal. When you turn Ripper Mode on the time slows for a half a second. The time also slows whenever you are in Blade Mode. Because 1+1=2, as soon as you turn the Ripper Mode on press the Blade Mode button. Time will flow even slower. And because of Infinite Wig B you can stay in that state as long as you want and enable it as many times as you want.

Now for a boss fight. Parry his first dash attack to have his 2 out of 6 pieces of shield destroyed. Run away from him but keep him between you and Hammerhead to avoid helicopter fire. He will Dash attack again. Repeat one more time. When you start stage 2 and reload checkpoint the Hammerhead will disappear. Now quickly run up to him and turn on the Ripper Mode and Blade Mode. After 11 hits he will jump back. Get closer again and wait till he lowers his Pincer Blade and activate Ripper Mode and Blade Mode again. Repeat until he is dead.
For a Slider section there is a blind spot in bottom-right where you can stay and spam attack to get to the top safely. QTE and achievement is yours.

As always quit to Title after every checkpoint to save in case of getting hit. Also do not go to customize screen during the fight because if you get hit it will save it and even though you have full health and No Damage screen you will not get an achievement.

This Ripper Mode and Blade Mode trick works on every boss except for Monsoon because you are in permanent Ripper Mode during that fight.

I found the best strategy was to actually let Sundowner keep one layer of his explosive shields, considering if you remove all 6 he changes his attack pattern and becomes more aggressive and harder to predict.

You can't get hit in the awkward Slider-riding section going up the building interior. I left a note in the video that X fires missiles, and by staying in the bottom left/right you're pretty much fine just so long as you dodge any pillars in your way. Oddly enough, just so long as Raiden himself doesn't collide with anything, it seems the Slider can clip things with its wings and no damage will be dealt to Raiden.

Maintain a stable line with reflective attacks, dodges and rolls. Recede, boost forward, cut and recede. Block attacks and watch for defensive poses, which are actually very strong here. Aside from jumping around during the building flight on a slider, fire a lot with [cn X] to clear debris.

Sundowner is one of the easier bosses in the game, so this trophy isn't too complicated. You must be playing on Hard, Very Hard, or Revengeance, and defeat Sundowner without taking any damage. If Sundowner or his Helicopter lands a hit on you, use the Restart Checkpoint option to try again. Sundowner has 2 phases to his fight with a checkpoint between them. Unless you're impatient, you should leave this trophy for your Stormbringer playthrough, as earning a no damage bonus helps you achieve an S-Rank.

See Boss Data for additional details.
