How to unlock the Stormbringer achievement in METAL GEAR RISING: REVENGEANCE - Definitive Guide

Here is a link to a full guide to Revengeance Difficulty with S ranks achieved on every ranked battle. It has full commentary and I will only use the unlimited sub weapon wig for the lobby in file 04. No other infinite wig or fox blade will be used.

It should help players of any skill level acquire this achievement.

I've just beat 00 on Revengence and is it just me or was that insanely hard?

I used the save/checkpoint exploit.

The hardest thing was not having the nanopaste to hit restart, I had to go title, file 2 then load.

Does it get easier or less annoying?

it's almost impossible to do this without getting the no damage bonus on Sam's boss fight. I haven't come out with perfect health on any boss fight so far and have still s-ranked them but Sam is driving me insane. I think I need to get higher combos on him if I can't manage the perfect score. I'll need to go back a third time for the perfect wins...Sam and Senator are probably going to make me want to chuck my 360 out the window.

another tip... (especially for lobby fight in R:04 vs grad) - check your times at the end of the ranked fight, for some reason - mine thought i'd taken 2.5 hours to complete the section so it was impossible for me to s-rank without no damage, or restarting... although i got close with the no damage - i did it first time after a restart.

Just did the achievement yesterday. A few tips to the video guide:
- the fox blade (normal enemies) and infinite ripper mode (bossfights) makes the game much much easier
- almost every fight must be done to no damage, only a few needs a certain number of combos. if you do a zandatsu on a few enemies the S is guaranteed in normal fights (the lobby fight and the double boss AI battle is where you can take any damage and still get an S)
- never use restart when you die because it ruins your statistics, if you get hit but didn't die you can use it but if you are dead go back to the title and load up your save
- back up your saves to all three slots (Y on the save screen). if you always quit to the title screen when you die the game shouldn't save your extra time - it still happened me in a few rare cases so I suggest overwriting your primary save after a dozen or so tries with an untouched backup
- if you install the title update the game can glitch on you in bossfights meaning it won't give you the "no damage" bonus no matter how many times you redo it perfectly (trust me, I tried). the only known solution is to delete the update and kill the boss offline.
- you need to do file 07 for last because the end of the game is the only time the game checks if you are qualified to the Stormbringer achievement. if you do 07 before the other levels you need to redo 07 again...

Can I just say you will need to go to chapter select after collecting everything to keep them all cause if you just start a new game you will end up losing everything you have collected through your normal/hard playthroughs.

I recently got this trophy done, and wanted to offer up a few insights that I found, as well as a few guides that I used.

Before going any further, let me just say this: PLAY EVERY DIFFICULTY. Seriously, I know there is the code to unlock all the difficulties from the jump (Up, Up, Down, Down, Left, Right, Left, Right, O, X, Start) BUT if you want to go for this legit, then take the time and play through every single difficulty. I can only speak for myself regarding this, but I found that by the time I started Revengeance difficulty, I was a parrying pro, and understanding that simple maneuver will make Revengeance go from a nightmare to completely doable.

The game itself is not that long (8 chapters total, the longest chapter being maybe ~45 mins if you are not rushing), and you will learn all those cool techniques, obtain a crapload of BP, and cut everything that Revegeance attempts to throw at you. wink

Also, one more thing: MAKE A BACKUP SAVE BEFORE EVERY RANKED BATTLE. Trust me, it will make the playthrough a bit longer, but it is worth it. The last thing you want is to be at the end of a level, get an A rank and watch the game save it (thus making all your progress absolutely meaningless angry). Be cautious and MAKE THE BACKUP SAVE.

Now, onto this solution:

A SUMMARY OF “S” RANKS

As the trophy description says, you need to S Rank every mission on Revengeance difficulty. In order to S Rank a mission, you need to S Rank every single ranked battle in said mission. Achieving anything lower than an S Rank, even on just one battle, will result in a non-S Rank for the mission. Seriously, you could have every battle S Ranked except for one that was an A, and your mission results will be an “A” Rank.

Below is the gamefaq guide I used. It was made by Vesperas, and it is more in-depth than anything else I found online (besides an actual video guide smile).

http://www.gamefaqs.com/xbox360/960513-metal-gear-rising-rev...

The author details every ranked battle, and what will be required to S Rank it (time, combo, points, zandatsus). READ IT – this was a lifesaver for me, hands down. It detailed where every ranked battle was so I could do as above (MAKE A BACKUP SAVE!!!)

Now, I know the guide will state this, but I just want to reiterate it here: The “No Damage” bonus is not required on every ranked battle. Don’t get me wrong – most battles are a nightmare to get the S Rank without the “No Damage” bonus, but some are well within reach without it. For example, the fight where you wait for the elevator on R04 can be done while taking damage IF you build up a great combo, rip out a few spines, gather enough points (fairly easy with all the items in the display cases wink) and keep the fight under 8 minutes.

There are other fights that can be done without the “No Damage” bonus, and they are in the guide, HOWEVER it is a good idea to strive for the “No Damage” at every opportunity: it will make the S Ranks far more likely.

DO NOT think using the Wooden Sword and going for the “No Kill” bonus will help you here, because it won’t. Using the Wooden Sword will take away the opportunity for zandatsus completely, and hinder other categories like points and combos. DO NOT USE THE WOODEN SWORD – this is Revengeance difficulty, and you are bloodthirsty. Remember that. And this brings me to the next item on the list…

GEAR/EQUIPMENT

Before you start your Revengeance run, do yourself a favor and unlock every weapon and customization item. Having options is a good thing. Having every option available, and maxed out, is even better.

Most of this game I used the following:
- Custom Body Red
- Infinite Wig B
- Muramasa blade

There were a few battles where I switched to the Armor Breaker, but I found that Muramasa in Ripper mode does the trick a majority of the time wink. Of course, you need to be careful in Ripper mode, especially with Custom Body Red – you can take enemies out TOO quickly, and restrict your combo and points categories. There were a few times I had to restart because, even though I had the “No Damage” bonus I still got an A Rank because my combos were shit, and subsequently my points were affected, so keep that in mind.

There are a few points where you will want to switch to Infinite Wig A (Monsoon battle) just so you don’t have to worry about EMP grenades. This is also beneficial in regards to your points IF you slash up the vehicles he throws at you as they all go right to BP.

I did not use the Blade Mode wig at all. It was good on my Very Hard playthrough, however I found it less necessary especially when I needed the high combos on Revengeance.

As I said above in the other category: DO NOT USE THE WOODEN BLADE. I am not going to repeat everything again, just don’t use it.

Lastly, don’t discount the stun blade – it does everything the other blades do, but it can also stun people once in a while. Not to bad, however I only found it stunning people every so often, so I didn’t relay on it very much roll. And that Muramasa blade is just epic .

If anyone has any questions about any other gear I didn’t mention, please let me know in the comments.

TECHNIQUES

There are some really great maneuvers that the game doesn’t really teach you…at all…angry. You have to learn them via trial and error OR find some technique list online. The one technique you do learn (Parry) will be the backbone of your combat style. Believe me – mastering this will make the game 1,000 times easier.

There are some other techniques that I found to be very useful, and I will mention them below:

Parry

The tutorial you get from the beginning of the game will teach you the basics of the Parry maneuver, however mastering it can be tricky. Do yourself a favor, start the game on Easy and do not use the parry assist. Play the game on easy and learn the parry the right way. That parry assist will not help you learn how to parry at all – it will only delay your understanding of the parry.

Any attack that is neutral (no color) or shines red can be parried. Any attack that shines gold cannot be parried.

Lastly, in regards to the parry, learn the timing for the PERFECT PARRY. Here is an example why:

Perfect Parry + Muramasa blade + Custom Body Red = SAM 100% to ~40% health with ONE MOVE!!!! laugh Seriously – Perfect Parry on Revengeance difficulty will obliterate most boss’s health – the only problem is you still need the combos and the points, so you could walk away from a boss fight in under a minute and still have only an A Rank roll. Keep that in mind. (A simple solution is to have Wig B and after a Perfect Parry immediately enter blade mode and hack the crap out of the enemy laugh).

Launch

I do not remember what the move is called, but I found it extremely useful on several playthroughs. The FORWARD + FORWARD + SQUARE maneuver will get most enemies, and bosses, airborne while doing a good chunk of damage. In regards to boss battles, if you get one airborne, then jump up and initiate blade mode, you can enjoy a slow-mo combo-feast in no time at all laugh.

Lunge

Once again, I forget the official move title, but it is the FORWARD + FORWARD + TRIANGLE maneuver, and if you every played any of the original Devil May Cry games (PS2) then you will recognize this move. It is great for shortening the distance between you and the enemy AND has a tendency to throw some enemies flying .

Heavy Attacks

The first time I used a heavy attack on my Revengeance playthrough was the third phase of the Senator fight. I am not kidding – don’t bother with them. They will make parry more difficult, and to be honest you should have either the pincers or the sai equipped.

-------------------------------------------------------------

That is all I can think of at the moment in regards to S Ranking Revengeance. Below is a series of Youtube videos from TheSeraphim17 on his Revengeance S Rank run. It is pretty good, except I mostly used it to find the fights I was missing on my previous playthroughs roll. Not that this guy doesn’t know what he is doing (he is very good) just there were moments where he could have burned through a bit faster (for example, as you watch the prologue he takes out the initial enemies, which is not necessary, and he doesn’t parry the stomp attacks from RAY, which would have taken out the MG’s additional turrets AND done significant damage ). Using the gamefaqs guide in conjunction with the video below will present a very detailed paradigm to follow when going for the Stormbringer trophy.

Questions, corrections and neg vote justifications below.

I wrote a guide for this on Steam here, http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=364008...
I decided I would go ahead and place the guide on this site as well, and thus will paste the videos for each one. As said on the steam guide, I give all credit for the videos to The Seraphim17 on Xbox.

00 - Prologue

01 - Coup De E'tat

02 - Research Facility

03 - Mile High

04 - Hostile Takeover

Part 1 -

Part 2 -

05 - Escape From Denver

06 - Badlands Showdown

07 - Assassination Attempt

Once more, I would like it known that The Seraphim17 is to be given credit for his amazing work. All I am doing is giving it a central location for all to see. Hope it helps, and let me know how I could further improve the guide if you have any suggestions. Good luck!

This is one of the most difficult trophies in the game, but the difficulty can be lowered by using select gear. You'll have to unlock most of the gear by finding collectibles and clearing the VR missions. Once you have everything you can use, you'll have to clear the game on Revengeance difficulty while clearing every ranked battle with an S Rank. You must be absolutely sure you fight in and clear every ranked mission with an S-Rank, if you fail to do so you will not be in place to earn this trophy. You will earn this trophy at the final results screen as it displays all S Ranks. You can do the missions in any order as long as R-07 is done last; if it's not, you will need to S Rank it again to earn the trophy.

See Revengeance S-Rank Guide for details.

So this is the most difficult trophy in the game and for it you need to get an S rank in all battles so that the rank for the chapter is S. I’ll give an example, let’s say there are 10 fights in the chapter and in 9 of them you got an S and in the last one an A or you missed, get an A. In this regard, I offer a guide to all fights so as not to miss anything.

R-00 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6IF97E5GWNc

R-01 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qTZsHEEOMiM

R-02 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zQ8DBFQ_Q64

R-03 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NHiy7b4cIwI

R-04 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LdZ2KiZsefA

R-05 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EIwtAp0t9vI

R-06 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o8cnZZF1vm4

R-07 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ttDPbzxpkrk

Well, something from me, in order to be guaranteed to get S, play without damage, not necessarily the entire chapter, the main thing is only those fights in which they give marks and do at least one zandatsu. And do this only during the second playthrough that you had reaper mode. And lastly, you can open this mode at the very beginning by entering the code on the title screen, where it says press start (up up down down left right left right ).

If the following happened to you: during the passage you received an A rank for one of the chapters, and S in the rest, don’t worry. You can replay chapter with A rank, but then to get the trophy, you need to replay chapter 07, again at S rank.

There are two battles in which you can take damage (the less the better? I haven’t checked, I used nanopaste a couple of times) and, despite this, earn an S rank on Revengeance difficulty:

File-04: the second battle, in front of the elevator, cyborgs with shields, sliders, mastiffs and GRAD (it would be nice to have an infinite wig)

File-04: fight with AI Mistral and AI Monsoon, before the battle with the boss Sundowner (I chopped more Mistral tripods, this apparently gives a plus)

The playlist shows the passage of all levels, including bosses at rank S, while the person demonstrates the passage without restarts using the Wig B wig (infinite energy / ripper mode) and one gets the impression that the difficulty level of the trophy is close to two out of ten, it also shows how to avoid most unnecessary battles.

When rating a battle, if you see that the rank is not S, you can have time to press start and restart, so you can replay the battle. It's a crap thing to do before the game saves. It may not work in battles that take place in several stages.

Yes, in mission R-04 there is a second battle and in the battle in front of Sandauer you can take damage, the main thing is if something went wrong (namely you were killed) then re-enter through the title bar, because After the restart, time is saved and I highly recommend making a couple of copy saves in other slots before these battles.

To get S in the fight with Mistral and Monsoon in Chapter 4, you need to make a chain of at least 50 hits (with a long stick during the fight with Mistral, for example). To take down Sundowner on S: during the second part of the battle, wait until he jumps from the roof onto the tower (run around him), 2 soldiers appear, do a zandatsu to at least one of them, and only then finish him off.

For those who are going to play on Revengeance difficulty on S, I recommend completing 30% of the VR missions (that’s 5-6 missions) and get Red Armor, this armor increases damage but reduces defense. With Rip turned on, enemies and bosses will die even faster, I passed without it was really difficult in places

It is especially useful to copy the save in the fourth chapter, immediately before running along a corridor fired by sliders, since I had such a miracle case when I ran the entire corridor normally, and while running along the wall I ran into one rocket and flew down. And saving in front of these missiles, so after running along the wall a second time I only got a “B”. It's also worth saving in front of the Sundowner, because if you destroy all of its shield plates, a checkpoint will be activated. Whether this will hurt the rating or not, I haven’t checked, but it won’t hurt to be on the safe side.

By the way, there is a similar save in the middle of the battle in the battle with Metal Gear Excelsus, after cutting off the first leg. So, it is NOT necessary to go through it again, you can continue from the checkpoint, you can get “S”, verified.

I want to slightly correct the tip from the user Grendaizer.

There are two cases in the game when you may not receive a bonus for not being damaged:

1) You were hit while saving. No matter how hard you try, you are unlikely to get higher than A.
2) Presumably a bug.

There is also one more inconvenience. If you die in battle and click Restart in the window that appears, the timer will continue to count the entire time you participate in this battle. Because of this, you won't get the time bonus... which will make it much more difficult to get an S rank in this fight. Try not to let your character die and press Restart if you are wounded/dealt too much damage (Applies to battles where you can take damage).

I had to play through missions on Revengeance difficulty several times without knowing it.

It should be a little easier for everyone who bought the disc edition. I bought the usual one, there was a code to download the Gray Fox sword and armor. Having upgraded this sword a little, you will be able to kill any enemies except bosses with 1-2 hits. And with reaper mode enabled and red armor, most battles will not be difficult. Just don’t forget to do zandatsu and more extra combos. weapon, the Mistral pole is best suited. Only the bosses will present the main difficulty.
