I don't understand. I just did Classified Intel Acquisition in 4:19 (much quicker than the video) and got no points deductions, was a perfect run, yet I get an A rank?

That505Guy - Yeah, you need to score an A on Renegade Threat to unlock the sniper. Or you can do what I do, and grab it off the back of the truck on the bridge, to the right if you're coming up from the ocean area. I snoozed the two guards instead of letting them get in the truck and drive away.

So here's a question I haven't found the answer to: If I go in any mission at all, and get an S rank, then return at a later time for say an achievement, or a cassette and DO NOT receive an S rank, is that S from the prvious playthrough negated from the achievements history??

if you're not getting your achievements reboot your system.

Also you get a ridiculous boost in points for using NO REFLEX, so try that if you're not getting S-rank. It kind of defeats the purpose of MGS anyways, which has always been stealth.

Jamais Vu S-rank obtained with 10:19, 0 alerts, 0 kills, 0 retries = 24,059. So can be done with some reflexes.

I was having so much trouble with the Destroy the AA Emplacement Side Op. It's soooo easy to get S Rank after obtaining the Rocket Launcher at the start of the mission for getting A Rank. If you do this all you do is head to the hill where your LZ is and take out the three AA guns that are in clear view. Then take out the Armored Truck on the left side of the facility when it enters. Finished in 3:32:896 and had a score of 54348 which gave me S Rank.

Just to clarify something, it CAN be a mix of normal/hard modes, you need at least one S rank in each mission....I just popped this a few minutes ago, here are my ranks

Mission/Normal/hard

Ground Zeroes S/A
Eliminate the Renegade Threat S/C
Intel Operative Rescue S/C
Classified Intel Acquisition S/A
Destroy the Anti-Air Emplacements S/B
Jamais Vu D/S

As you can see, I got all S ranks on normal except the last mission, where I got an S on hard, yeah, I know, weird.....

S ranking the last missions i need to do is genuinely kicking my arse, I thought i pulled a perfect run on the two target elimination one, but i only got an A, i didn't get spotted no one got killed, no restarts and i extracted both targets, Jamus vu i know i just need to not cause a restart, i think the turret one i just need to not cock up at any point

Like SeanOgMiSPARTAN above, I have also completed all the missions with an S rank, but no achievement. Hell, I even got an S rank on the Deja Vu mission, but with no success. All I know is that my internet connection dropped before I completed the last mission I did with an S rank (which happens when our phone rings for some reason!). I have tried the following solutions I have seen around the web:
1. Uninstalled and reinstalled the game.
2. Cleared the cache by unplugging the power cable etc.
3. Redid all the missions AGAIN making sure I got S rank.
None of these have worked...
Has anybody experienced the same thing, and have you found a way to resolve the problem? Cheers in advance for any tips...

In "Eliminate the renegade threat" the target on the far left of the map never turned up as he was being driven around the map in a car. As I also didn't have the sniper rifle, I basically sedated the first guard at the start, ignored the others and continued up the path to where the truck can be located before it drives off. I quickly sedated all enemies in the area, grabbed the sniper out the back of the truck and waited by the exit (sedating the guard here too). You can identify the target in the tower at this point using the sniper rifle. I then patiently waited until the second target in the car turns up just to the left of the truck, I sedate both guards (they get out the car to wake up the guards on the path). Then put a bullet in the targets head with my silenced machine gun. I then snipe the tower target and run out the exit.

*EDIT ** - I can also confirm this method on hard although the guards wake up a hell of a lot faster!

Both guides above are fantastic, but I just wanted to add as a general rule of thumb:

If you complete all the missions required (Deja Vu is not necessary) 100% stealth with no kills (1 level being an exception), no reflex on, next to no checkpoint abuse in a relatively quick amount of time, then you will get the S rank.

I know that may sound like a lot, but the fact is this game is one map that, once effectively learned, can be a breeze to run through no matter what the objective. So learn the map - complete a few runs on the mission, understand the enemy patrols, and steer clear of high guard concentrated areas, and you will be fine.

The only one I had difficulty with was the Jamais Vu mission, and time was my enemy. I would take too long
and despite not having any alerts, kills, or reflex, the time would kill my S Rank and drop me down to an A.

I found with that mission you need to no more than 12 mins - if you are taking longer than that, then no matter how amazing you did with the rest of it, you would not get the S Rank.

For Ground Zeroes, I took a while just because I was trying to mark everyone. Ended up with an S Rank by accident. Just stayed stealth, rescued all 7 POW's, killed no one and kept it under 40 mins.

The Classified Intel Acquisition was the easiest for me, and you can get it done with no kills and stealth in no time at all. You can follow the very simple guide for this achievement.

The Intel Operative Rescue was much easier than I anticipated as well, as long as you go for the pacifist achievement, and do not abuse checkpoints.

Eliminate the Enemy Threat was the only mission where I just straight up killed people (the two marks in question). If you go for the depth achievement, and do well enough to get (I believe) a A rank, then you will have a sniper rifle from the mission start. I picked that up, and made a B-line to the road that leads out of the camp on the right. There is a guard standing in a booth - tranq him. Stand on top of the booth and you have both targets well within your sniping range. Pick them off, and then continue to the road to the right out of the area. Should take you ~2 minutes, and give you an S rank (despite the kills).

Destroy The Anti-Air Replacements I found to be a lot of fun. Take your time, remain unseen, kill no one, and go for the Rescue achievement, and you will be fine. I highly advise using the C4 for this mission, and remember: you only need to take out 3 of the guns, so focus on the ones that are not overly guarded. A lot of the enemies use the same patrol patterns as in the Ground Zeroes mission, so you should be familiar with what guards are stations where. I had a blast here, and kinda lost track of time, but even using an excessive amount netted me the S rank while saving all 4 POW's.

Just remember: this is a stealth game. If you run-n-gun, then you going to have a bad time. Remain unseen, kill no one (with Palitz and Glaz being the exceptions wink), and (for most) try to make it snappy and you will get the S rank.

Also, as an end note: When I say "Do not abuse checkpoints", I mean just that. Hitting checkpoints in the double digits is ABUSE, and you will pay for it with the nasty negative points modifyer that hits you endgame. Understaning where the checkpoints are is helpful, but every time you use one it is -300 points to your total score. No reflex (most of the time) will offset that and then some, but if you are hitting those checkpoints like crazy (i.e. ABUSING THE CRAP OUT OF THEM) and you end up with a -3,000+, then it doesn't matter how awesome you were everywhere else: you won't get the S Rank.

There's a nice channel on the Youtube that complete all the missions taking the easiest and fastest path. Just make sure you make every step as the player in the videos and you should get the S rank.

Remember! Turn off REFLEX in the game settings. This will reward you with a lot of points.

I'm NOT THE OWNER of the videos!

MISSION ONE: Ground Zeroes

MISSION TWO: Eliminate the Renegade Threat

MISSION THREE: Intel Operative Rescue (pay attention when you're dealing with the tank, the RPG explosion can kill some unconscious guard, this will disable the PACIFIST trophy)

MISSION FOUR: Classified Intel Acquisition

MISSION FIVE: Destroy the Anti-Air Emplacements

MISSION SIX: Extra-Op: Déjà Vu

Don't kill anyone, you're only a good person hunting some trophy! If you kill, you will loose some points. Good luck!

IGN also has brilliant quick walkthroughs to these on their website, which i found easier to follow personally.

Can you please update your guide to specifically state that people don't need to S-Rank Jamais Vu to get the trophy?

After you have successfully finished a mission within the game, you will be presented with a stats board which awards you with points based off your playstyle - rescues performed, enemies killed, alerts raised, retries used - and the amount of time it took to complete the mission. For each of the six missions, their S-rank point criteria differs quite a bit and these are the rough estimates:

  • Ground Zeroes: ~50,000+ Points
  • Eliminate the Renegade Threat: ~45,000+ Points
  • Intel Operative Rescue: ~20,000+ Points
  • Classified Intel Acquisition: ~50,000+ Points
  • Destroy the Anti-Air Emplacements: ~45,000+ Points
  • Jamais Vu: ~22,000+ Points

For this achievement, you will need to earn an S-rank in each mission at least once; difficulty does not matter. In order to do this, you will need to play smart; always take into consideration your surroundings, your weapon choice, your CQC approach, etc. As a few general reminders, keep these five key tips in mind when playing each mission, and if you are successful in being a true stealth-like operative, you will walk away with an S-rank for each mission without a problem.

  • Familiarization
    • Play each mission at least once in order to understand where you must go for each objective and how to complete these objectives - time is of the essence for S-ranks, so completing each level quickly is top priority.
  • Non-Lethal Takedowns:
    • Ditch the Assault Rifle, or any other weapon for that matter, and stick to Snake's Wu Silent Pistol; it knocks enemies out, rather than killing them (killing grants massive penalties) just make sure to always hide bodies.
  • Avoid Detection
    • Raising suspicions or getting caught will harm your score, and have the entire camp on high alert with guards closing in on you; stick to the shadows and refrain from being caught.
  • Rescue Prisoners
    • Take a few extra minutes to rescuer prisoners - each successful rescue and extraction earns you nearly four thousand additional points, so it is in your best judgment to rescue as many as possible, as quick as possible, all without not getting caught.
  • Practice
    • This cannot be stressed enough; restarting checkpoints, getting caught, killing guards all reduce your final score, so practice each mission several times so you can complete them without any slip-ups, even if they are minor.

For a visual representation of an in-depth walkthrough with commentary for obtaining an S-rank on each of the six missions within the game, do not hesitate in clicking THIS LINK, where Maka shows us the ropes of how to make this achievement a bit easier. Alternatively, for an in-depth video guide that provides no commentary, but quicker and more effective strategies, click THIS LINK for PowerPyx's playlist.

Do your best to avoid killing and alerting any enemies. Play smart and use the Wu Silent Pistol when necessary. Take your time, line up the reticle, and go for those headshots so baddies will fall asleep instantaneously.

You can finish all six missions on normal difficulty with an S-rank and earn the achievement, you don't have to worry about doing this on hard.

Upon clearing a mission you’ll come across a results screen. Certain records will be displayed for that mission depending on your performance. For the most part, most missions require that you garner 50000 points or higher as your final score before rewarding you with the S-rank. The only exceptions here are the "Intel Operative Rescue" Side Op and the "Jamais Vu" Extra Op, as these are more action oriented missions (approximately 20000 points should net you the S-rank provided that you don’t kill many people while you’re out of the chopper in Intel Operative Rescue). These points you earn in the results screen at the end of a mission do not accumulate for repeated playthroughs of a mission; the points are only there for that most recent playthrough. Here’s what to keep in mind:

1. Be quick and efficient. If you have to replay a mission, keep the objective locations fresh in your mind and get it done. Don’t mess around, stick to the objective. Memorize the areas where guards stay put.

2. Enemy combat alerts. If you tranquilize someone with the Wu Silent Pistol, and a patrolling guard catches one of his allies "sleeping on the job," you should still be able to continue just fine as long as you aren't spotted. If that white detection line fills up on your screen and you enter reflex mode, take care of that enemy quick and kill only if you need to. Don't enter reflex mode too often if you have it enabled!

3. Killing subtracts from the final score you earn in a mission. If you kill one guard, that’s minus 200 points from the final score (if you kill two, minus 400 and so on). It's best to just use the Wu Silent Pistol.

4. Rescue prisoners. For each one you save, you are rewarded with 3500 points for your final score in that mission.

5. Do not lose your helicopter when you call one in. If enemies see it, they will open fire at it. Select a safe spot that is secluded from enemy units’ line of sight. I usually stick to the cliffside east-northeast of the cages where Chico is located in the main mission when designating a landing zone.

6. If you make a small blunder such as accidentally wasting one tranquilizer round, it won’t be worth it to retry a mission (unless you’re that stubborn). Restarting from the last saved checkpoint subtracts 300 points from the final score.

7. Disable reflex to earn a point bonus in the final score (not required though, I got S-ranks in all missions on normal with reflex enabled). It must be disabled before you start a mission to count.

Maka has provided video solutions for the S-ranks, if you are having difficulty be sure to check out his videos with this link (click here). He provides some nice commentary that will guide you through each mission with ease.

If you'd rather not listen to commentary, but would opt for some quick solutions just to be done with this achievement, take a look at PowerPyx's S-rank solutions in his YouTube playlist (click here). However, this doesn't cover the "Jamais Vu" Extra Op on Xbox, but the PlayStation exclusive "Déjà Vu" Extra Op instead. You can view Maka's S-rank guide for "Jamais Vu" under the "Hidden" achievement down below.

I’ll also add that for S rank you don’t need to do all missions only at a specific difficulty level, that is, there is no need to do S only on normal or only high, you can mix it up. If you got S at high, but there is no rank at normal in this mission, then you don’t have to bother. I myself did not have an S rank on normal in the mission “Rescue the Scout”, but did it on a high one, the trophy fell out.

I didn’t notice any difference in the game on normal and high difficulty, only that on high difficulty there are no lethal weapons (with a silencer) at the start, in principle, at rank S it is still advisable not to kill anyone (300 points are deducted for each killed person and 330 for replaying , 600 for an alarm - if I'm not mistaken), so there is no need for this weapon, and you can safely do it on high, and it’s much more interesting to play with a tranquilizer In almost all missions, additional cartridges for it are in the booth near the prison where Chico was rescued, if you go from the beginning of the first mission past the prison to the left along the fork, there is also a checkpoint that triggers (I didn’t have them there only in “Destruction of Air Defense”). To avoid wasting time, call a helicopter to evacuate prisoners, targets, or exit the mission in advance. You can drag all those rescued to one place, and then evacuate all together, but in the mission “Killing Traitors”, evacuate the first enemy separately from the second, because while you are chasing the second, the first will wake up only if you are not going to carry him with you.

In the Deja Vu mission, you only need to run fast to rank. To begin with, you should go through it collecting all the Events in order to get an idea of where, who and what is located. So, from the start we run at a gallop and turn right at the intersection, run to the tower near the helipad, there we carefully pass on the courts and focus on the perception of 2 soldiers and a helicopter, then past the wall - to the red door, break open the grate, turn off the lights - the memory is dark , and on the right side we run to the exit from the mission. 2 minutes and rank S. Perhaps they will also give it without emphasis on the helicopter, but for me it automatically clung to it, since I was passing by, it won’t be superfluous, for each memory they give 5000 points.

For the trophy, it will be enough to complete all missions (except for Jamevu) on the Normal difficulty level to rank S (I myself do not have rank S in the missions “Destroying Air Defense” and “Deja Vu” at the High difficulty level)

Let me add that if you want to complete the game 100%, and not just knock out all the achievements, then you need to complete Jamevue with an “S” rating on both difficulties.

There is a video guide, it is suitable for both difficulties:

I noticed that a hit from a tranquilizer into a soldier's body from a long distance (50-70 meters) is not always registered by the game. It is better to look at the target through binoculars and wait for the sleeping pills to take effect. Sometimes it is easier to put soldiers to sleep with body shots : 2 shots and sleep after 5 seconds or 3 shots and sleep immediately. Tranquilizer Darts (box with blue lid) can be found in White Security Booths and White Metal Watchtowers . The availability of darts may vary depending on the task and difficulty. There are no darts in warehouses with a red door, only weapons and explosives. No matter the task or difficulty, there are always two boxes of darts in the administration building : lying on metal shelves in the courtyard (truck parking) near the automatic gate and the central observation tower.
