How to unlock the Disappearance achievement in METAL GEAR SOLID V: THE PHANTOM PAIN - Definitive Guide

To unlock the mission, you need to make sure you have done this steps:

- Spare the life of Quiet at end of Mission 11 so that you can recruit her as a “Buddy”.
- Make sure you have the maximum possible bond with Quiet. You can check it out during the mission selection screen.
- You have seen the cutscene at Mother Base in which Huey is exiled.
- You don’t use the “Butterfly” design for your emblem.

Now the final process has been started (See spoiler on how to prevent this).

You can start Side Op 150 now. By progressing through this mission you will collect a file, which immediately starts the main mission 45. The achievement pops after completing this.

Important: (Decide if you want to know it, but I think you should)

apparently they are saying after newest patch, replay "cloaked in silence" 7 times when Quiet has left and she'll return (you have to knock her out though, no killing)

I'm about to try this, wish me luck

Might want to add a warning to the guide about actually going into the mission itself. I got a nasty surprise indeed when I found out what I was up against and the gear I actually had on me laugh

Do you lose Quiet or nah? I'm confused.

You do lose her, but if you then replay the mission “Cloaked in Silence” 7 times (!) she will then become selectable as a buddy again.

Can we use the cloud save trick, as in completing the mission while offline, and then deleting the save. Then just go back online and get the save back?

I am realy sure this would work, but remember, there are achievements for completing all missions.

So we can use the Butterfly emblem and quiet won't leave?

No, you only do not trigger the point of no return.

So, if you do this mission and she is gone, I can equip he emblem and she will return by my side?

No, sadly she will not return. The emblem is for preventig the automaticly mission start. If you do this mission, she is lost forever.

As someone who was trying to avoid spoilers and enjoy the story, I hope they "fix" it so that you can continue playing with her as a buddy.

It makes absolutely no sense that you can replay missions and use the Fulton to extract more troops (despite "going back in time") and yet at this point you are totally screwed.

Getting all S-rank just got significantly more difficult, and I'm extremely disappointed in this design decision.

The description for this achievement is misleading, as it will only pop after completing Mission 45,
This mission will start automatically after the completion of Side Op 150,
without giving you a chance to return to the ACC and change your loadout before thrusting you back into the action, so make sure you have a rocket launcher (I used the CGM due to its effectiveness against the helicopter) before starting the Side Op. (Note: If you're underprepared for the mission, you can't exfiltrate through normal means, but if you Fulton the materials crate next to the palace and ride the crate out, it'll force quit the mission and allow you to change your loadout before attempting it again) This is a perhaps the most frustrating mission in the game, but there are a few strategies that can be employed to make it more doable.

- With your CGM-25, take pot shots from various points of cover. The ones I used were the prisoner holding cells to the left of the palace, openings in the front of the palace, and peeking around the right corner of the palace.
- Change your location after every shot. This sounds tedious and unnecessary, but the enemy AI in this game is unfair in that it will lock onto your last seen location after every shot you take. Switch locations frequently if you don't want to be one-shot.
- Let Quiet handle the individual soldiers, focusing your fire on the heavy infantry. In particular, prioritize the missile array vehicles over the standard tanks, as those will frequently lay down barrages against you and Quiet.
- As far as ammo restocks, there are two options: If you wait a moment after fully depleting your ammo, Quiet will jump to your location and place a flare calling for more ammo, at no cost to you. This is the more GMP-efficient option, but results in long periods where you're helpless with an empty launcher. As such, I instead opted to call supply drops in well in advance, usually requesting a new one every time the previous one dropped. The ground behind the palace serves as an effective blind spot for the attackers, making this a good place for the supplies to be dropped.

It still took me a while, but these strategies helped me finish the mission and pop the achievement. I've been told that there are a few other strategies that can be employed, at the cost of your A-rank. If you get fed up with the mission and just want it to be over, or you're replaying the mission for the sake of the extra tasks, I'd recommend using these.

- In the right sub-menu of the iDroid, under the "Fire Support" option, you can call in a request to change the weather (this option unlocks after having a high enough Support Unit level, not sure of the exact level required but it seems to be somewhere in the 30's). By calling in a sandstorm, the visibility of the attackers will be severely impaired, allowing you to more easily Fulton the vehicles out.
- Additionally, the more prevalent means of completing the task of extracting all the vehicles is the equip a highly levelled Parasite Suit with the Armor ability, then popping the ability right before running up to a vehicle and Fultoning it. This method allows you to tank the incoming fire, but requires a lot of investment in developments beforehand.

I hope this helped, good luck!

GGS SyntaX on TA wrote a good guide for this here TrueAchievements and I will post the spoilers, as I feel they are very important, here:

Just to note, I did copy paste the spoiler from his/her guide so ensure they are given credit for that. If you have not unlocked Quiet or are curious how to, here is a vdieo as opposed to GGS SyntaX's text guide: (credit to PowerPyx)

However, for those who are more inclined to a video walkthrough as opposed to a text guide here ya go:

If you have any suggestions please let me know. Past that, good luck!

Story-related, cannot be missed.

Unlike the previous story-related achievements, “A Quiet Exit” has a few prerequisites that must be met before it is unlocked and ready to play. Refer below for a list of the pre-reqs.

  • Spare Quiet’s life at the end of Mission 11, "Cloaked in Silence."
  • Achieve a maximum bond level with Quiet.
  • Experience Huey’s exile at Mother Base.
  • Do not equip the Butterfly emblem.

Once these pre-reqs have been met, you will trigger Side Ops #150. Select this Op and carry through with the objective that asks you to recover an intel file at a Soviet guard post. When you read the file, mission 45, "A Quiet Exit" will automatically begin.

NECESSARY SPOILER: The simple act of triggering Side Op #150 will permanently lock Quiet out for buddy-use on missions/replays, as will completing Mission 45, "A Quiet Exit." You can delay this as long as possible by equipping the Butterfly emblem and only taking it off once you are ready to bid farewell to Quiet. Unlocking this emblem is as easy as completing any one main mission where Quiet achieves more kills/neutralizations than you. This will in turn unlock the Butterfly codename and the emblem as well.

After maximizing your bond with Quiet (See War Buddy), you can unlock this trophy. The rest is spoilers, so click the tag below if you either don't care or already know what happens. Without any spoilers, however, simply maximize your bond with Quiet, unequip the Butterfly emblem if you have it equipped, then play a few missions or Side Ops. Return to the ACC, then do the Side Op you've been given. This will immediately lead into a mission, which will unlock this trophy at its completion.

After maxing out your bond with Quiet, unequipping the Butterfly emblem if you have it equipped, then completing a few missions or side ops, you'll be asked to complete Side Op 150 the next time you return to the ACC. This leads into mission 45. Quiet leaves as soon as Side Op 150 gets added to your iDroid and becomes unavailable to use as a buddy. The Butterfly emblem prevents Side Op 150 from appearing and therefore prevents Quiet from leaving. As of patch 1.07, After Quiet has left and these missions are complete, you can complete mission 11: Cloaked in Silence seven times to have her return and be usable as a buddy again.
The trophy will unlock as soon as you complete the mission.

To open this mission, you need to have maximum communication with Silent. To do this, play missions in which she is your partner.
You also need to go through about 45 main missions and, after that, go through the additional mission “Protect the Silent One”.
Now you can complete the mission required for the trophy.

If you reached the 45th mission with a weak weapon and read the hint above too late, do not despair. if you have a portal fulton, then you can return to the base through the container and already collect powerful weapons and start the mission again already ready.

We take the parasite suit and armor cartridges and simply destroy all ground equipment. You will only have to shoot at helicopters. People weren’t particularly touched, they were kept quiet. Rank S is guaranteed, and then raise money from selling equipment.

When Side Ops #150 opens, we go at him in full armor, with a bandana, a grenade launcher and a rocket launcher. It is advisable that everything be pumped up to the maximum, since after it is activated the mission will not be possible to exit.

If you do not go to rank S, then simply request art support, changing the weather conditions - we cause a sandstorm and fulton all the equipment. The enemy will have difficulty seeing you, allowing you to approach the vehicle easily. And you can take a grenade launcher just in case infantry gets in the way; it’s easier to fire grenade launchers from the hip while running...

I’ll add a little, when mission 47 appears, but mission 45 and 46 don’t - don’t worry, go through 47 and then 46 and additional #150 will appear (after which 45 automatically appears (starts).

The butterfly emblem didn't help me. Mission 45 started automatically anyway.

Take your time to complete this mission. It is better to leave this trophy closer to the end, because its consequences are irreversible and most will not be happy with them. To prevent this mission from starting automatically, you need to open the emblem for cooperation with Kvaet. To do this, she must stun more people than Snake 3 times on missions. After this, you need to set this emblem to your sign (Looks like a butterfly), until the emblem is with you - the mission begins. Who wants details and is not afraid of spoilers - here you go, a screenshot from the official manual in English, everything is clear and precise there.

There is a way to return Kvaet to the list of partners.
As you know, the girl sniper finally leaves the team after completing the mission “45. Silent Exit”.
With the release of patch 1.06 (November 2015), it became possible to return a useful partner.
This is done as follows:
You need to replay mission “11. [Repeat] Surrounded by Silence” 6-7 times in a row, and Kvaet must survive in all passages (we only use a tranquilizer, and in the intro we don’t shoot the girl).
After this, the mission will be renamed to "11. [Reunion] Surrounded by Silence."
We go through it again and voila - Kvaet is with you again!

Calm down, this is not a “How to resurrect Iris in Final Fantasy 7” scam, it’s actually been tested.
I provide screenshots as evidence.
