How to unlock the Elite achievement in METAL GEAR SOLID V: THE PHANTOM PAIN - Definitive Guide

Firstly, this solution is huge and I use a lot of spoilers here. MGSV:TPP has a total of 50 main story missons, 3 of them have no ratings (2/22/43).

In the following, I listed some general tips for achieving a S-Ranking:

- skip all cutscenes, S-rank is all about TIME (cutscenes add time!)
- be fast and silent (stealth) (extra points for no combat etc)
- turn off reflexmode, you will get 10k extra points in each mission
- to get an S-rank you need 130k+ points in a mission
- don't try to get s-rank on your first playthrough of a mission
- use shortcuts, if you know where a prisoner or enemy is, just go there directly without getting the Intel!
- use your buddies

To unlock mainstory episodes you need to play the yellow side missions.

Unlock Episode 45:

1. You need to have spared Quiet at the end of Mission 11.
2. Quiet is available for the mission.
3. You have Maximum Bond with Quiet.
4. You must have seen the cutscene at Mother Base where the scientist is exiled. (listen Cassette Tapes)
5. You don't use the front "Butterfly" design in your emblem.

You will get the sidemission 150 if you have met these requirements. The mainstory episode 45 starts directly after this side mission.

Unlock Episode 46:

1. Complete all main story missions (excluding 45 and 47-50)
2. Complete all the core Side Ops that are marked yellow on iDroid
3. Listen to all story audio/cassette recordings (they are yellow in color)
4. Upgrade Mother Base

I've put each mission in a spoiler. Furthermore, you will find my strategy requirements and a little hint for the mission in said spoiler.

Quick note on Blood Runs Deep: you can Fulton Extract ALL of the children. If you wait to do an S rank run until after you have the child Fulton and the portal extraction, you don't even need to lead them anywhere: just fulton them out and call in a chopper to the mine entrance. Before that it's the same: snipe the first dude then run to the mine, kill (or tranq) everyone, get to the cell. Then Fulton everyone. Super fast, super easy.

For Episode 9, instead of destroying 11/11 tanks. You start at the south LZ. Take Horse, put him on the road that the first tank from the Southern Palace is going. Put him somewhere past a rock so you can hide, the tank will stop and honk at the horse. Crouch out and fulton the tank. Run the clock out and youll get S rank because youll get the No Trace bonus worth 200k. Make sure not to leave any trace. No gunshots, mines, tranqs etc

It's amazing how many of these guides never do a quick map check so you can see where they are instead of trying to indicate one of the identical tan buildings.

You make this look so easy. Thank you so much. I think the way you play alters who may be where. I had a sniper constantly catch me on episode 8 where you first exit the tank and you had someone else. Either way though, thank you so much for the work you put into this. This makes me want to go and improve my solutions.

Easy as heck way to S-Rank both versions of Pitch Dark......no jeep required!!

As soon as you land, send Quiet to scout the Oil Field.....get to the cliff and use a tranq sniper rifle on the guy in the watch tower and the guy on the way to the orange thing you use a box to fast travel.......use the box to fast travel to the Oil Field..from here, you can have Quiet "cover you", it doesn't affect your rank as long as you YOURSELF aren't seen!!!....sneak to the big red container and place C-4 (do not blow it up yet!!!)..........sneak to the control panel and turn it off.....now sneak to where the material containers are in the fenced in area to the left..........from there detonate the C-4.......skip the cut-scene, climb onto the container and fulton out of there, easy as pie!!!

WAY easier way to get both C2W missions S-Ranked!!

Make sure you destroyed the anti-rader in the Eastern Communications Post first!! Use the Eastern Communications Post as a drop off point, as soon as the helicopter gets close, use the gun on the helicopter to destroy all 3 dishes..........then the helicopter will just leave....mission done!!

There's an excellent playlist for S-Ranks by PowerPyx on youtube:
https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLRr5L69yg_kGiYcnu_Stj...

As of now, it's not complete, yet. 31 Missions done, but the game came out just yesterday, so it should be complete by the end of this week.

This is not my playlist, i don't want any credit for the work of others :)

Update (03/09/15): 40 Videos online.

Yeah, you gave credit where credit was due and also supplied the perfect solution for this achievement. Someone had thumbs-downed one of my solutions in the past because it said I hadn't won it yet (didn't request update), so maybe that's why. Still not a reasonable excuse to thumbs down a good solution.

Yeah the old school people don't like when you put a solution up and have yet to unlock the achievement. I think that's retarded. If you know what needs to be done and it can help others then why the fuck does it matter?

Up-vote from me as well. Nice playlist. This will make the achievement much easier! Thanks pal. As previously stated: I am with you, I can't understand some of the people here. I get some down-votes as well for my solutions. Always without a comment that could help to improve it. I think some people are just fricking ungrateful. If people would stop writing solutions, the downvoters would get problems with their achievements as well. But I guess they just don't think that far or simply don't care, I don't know. Be it as it is: You did a good job, period!

This achievement has a bug. If you do C2W and get no ranking (because you already destroyed the equipment before the mission) you'll be unable to get an S rank on it (even if you replay it). Just completed every mission with S rank and replayed that mission and achievement still didn't unlock.

Here is a playlist link to an S rank walkthrough of every main mission. It is from a new game and for the most with a limited Mother Base making all but few strategies possible with very minimal equipment/requirements. It also features full commentary to further elucidate strategy.

There are a lot of great guides here, and it is very thorough already, but I just want to reinforce a few things for anyone struggling, or thinking this is going to be an unpassable mountain for them:

Time is everything.

49 out of the 50 missions I found time alone got me the S rank. Once I played a mission, and understood the objective, I simply restarted and made a B-line to wherever I needed to be. Skipped all cut scenes, bypassed any intel files or interrogations that were designed to spell out the objective, and just completed the mission.

You can abuse checkpoints and still get an S rank easily.

The points required for an S rank is 130,000. The points acquired from not using a checkpoint (i.e. no retries) is 6,000. There is no penalty for abusing checkpoints like in Ground Zeroes, so all you are really missing is the 6k bonus.

Do not concern yourself with mission tasks.

Some of you may be thinking that killing two birds and speed running this shit is the way to go. I can almost garuntee that even the most proficient stealth gamer is going to get annoyed quite easily trying to get all the tasks completed, as well as the mission objectives, while still keeping the time within a range to acquire an S Rank.

If you want to see what that entails, here is a playlist by MaliceNX. The guy is really good (might be an understatement), but watching him on a lot of missions you will see he just barely makes the cut for the S rank. Besides that, missions after you S rank become insanely easy with:

1.) Raiden suit (Obtained by S Ranking all missions)
2.) Stealth Camo (not the P.P. versions, but the one that recharges)

Seriously - all but 4 missions become an absolute cakewalk regarding tasks with these two items alone.

The annoying missions for S Ranking (IMO):

There are 50 missions in the game. You must complete all of these with the highest rank in the game, an S. In the second chapter of the story, you also receive Extreme, Total Stealth, and Subsistence missions, which are missions repeated from the first chapter with modifiers.

With the Extreme modifier, you take greatly increased damage and enemies, particularly bosses, take a lot more hits to neutralize. Total Stealth, as the name implies, requires that you complete the mission with no enemy alerts. If you alert the enemy, it's an automatic game over. Lastly, in Subsistence, you start with no gear, assistance or buddies at all, aside from your Fulton upgrades, which means you'll have to scavenge weapons and items from enemies and buildings.

The requirements to achieve an S rank are the same for every mission: 130,000 points. Time is probably the most contributing factor for gaining an S rank for most missions. However some feature mission tasks that net you tens of thousands of points. In missions with the Skulls, defeating them using heavy weaponry gives you 50,000 points. In Back Up, Back Down, eliminating all vehicles earns you 150,000 points, earning you an automatic S rank.

PowerPyx has compiled an excellent guide and series of videos showing how to S rank every mission in the game, which can be seen here:

Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain - S-Rank Walkthrough (Video and Text).

Glitches fixed with this trophy as of patch 1.04:

This is glitched with both the normal and Subsistence versions of the mission 'C2W'. When you destroy the comms equipment detailed in the mission in the open world instead of in the mission, instead of earning a legitimate rank, you can receive a '-' rank, similar to the few missions that take place at Mother Base. If this happens, it will permanently glitch the trophy. If you recognize this area in Afghanistan, don't destroy anything with explosives. The area is called the 'Eastern Communications Post' on the iDroid.

After you have successfully finished a mission within the game, you will be presented with a stats board which awards you with points based off your play style - rescues performed, enemies killed, alerts raised, retries used - and the amount of time it took to complete the mission. For every main mission in the game, barring missions 2, 22, and 43, the S-Rank score requirement sits at 130,000.

For this achievement, you will need to earn an S-Rank in each mission at least once. In order to do this, you will need to play smart; always take into consideration your surroundings, your weapon choice, your CQC approach, etc. While all of this is undoubtedly vital, it’s also important to know that S-Ranks in this game, unlike Ground Zeroes, are usually dependent on speed alone. Despite this, it’s not advisable to attempt S-Rank tactics until you have better gear and can return to a mission later in your playthrough. If you do earn S-Ranks along the way, that’s great. But don’t feel as though you need to get an S-Rank on your first playthrough of every mission. With that in mind, here a few more tips to consider, courtesy of PowerPyx.

  • Speed & Stealth
    • Completing the missions as quickly as possible, without ever being seen or raining an alarm will net the highest score possible.
  • Skip Mission Tasks
    • Skip the optional bonus objectives, as they take too long and will complicate things.
  • Stick to the Basics
    • Equipping the Parasite-Suit, Chicken-Hat, Infinity Bandana, or using Stealth Camo, D-Walker's Fulton Extraction Cannon, or calling in Air Strikes and/or Helicopter Support will all limit you to an A-Rank at most.
  • Destroy Outpost Radars
    • On your first playthrough of each mission, you should always make it a point to take out radar stations as doing so will allow you to use that base as a drop-zone or evac point when repaying the mission at a later time.

For an in-depth video guide that provides no commentary, and some of the most effective strategies that exist for each mission, head over to THIS LINK for PowerPyx's S-Rank playlist.

(extreme) Metal archaea - not the first time, but I managed to shoot all the skulls with a stationary machine gun, the simplest tactic, and most importantly fast.

The most important indicator in 90% of cases is time. For rank S, sometimes it’s worth neglecting many extras and completing the mission as quickly as possible (sometimes even this is enough) and as quietly as possible (without raising alarms, there will definitely be enough points).
I advise you to first collect all the invoices for quick movement in the box, since in some missions (for example, “road to hell” and “impenetrable darkness”) this trick allows you to save a LOT of time.

Using a cigar affects the time, so you better land from a helicopter,

If you can't earn S rank even with completing side quests, then try to run through the mission as quickly as possible.
PS parasite suit with fog will help you.

After developing portals, you can leave some missions through them. For example, in the mission to rescue the scientist who developed the prosthesis for Venom, there is a container if you go from the side of the crevice. We save the scientist, get out of the basements the same way, climb onto the container, stand near the center, open the portal, after the portal opens, it becomes possible to press the triangle again - we press it, voila - we don’t spend money on a helicopter and leave an order of magnitude faster.
Correction: You can also leave through regular cargo fultons, but also through a container.

I offer a version of passing episode 42 [EXTREME] METAL ARCHAEA, different from PS4Trophies, without a tank, a grenade launcher and without Kvaet. I've come across the opinion that this mission is almost the most difficult in the game to complete on S. This clearly cannot be said from the method I showed.
Advice on choosing equipment and partner:
The thickest armor for yourself, a character with the Tough Guy skill.
In your hands, a large-caliber rifle, just in case, grenades for dropping supplies.
Tactics in the video at the link. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_FXghw9HMLw
PS lol I didn’t even see that the same method has already been proposed above, video from the PowerPyx channel, on PS4Trophies war))

In the mission Surrounded by Silence (Extreme), it is easier to take a tank and D-Dog than to run around with a sniper and shoot Quiet.

In the Road to Hell mission, you can shorten the path by using fast travel points from the power plant to the camp.

In my opinion, one of the best and most convenient ways to get a trophy. You can kill several birds with one stone at once https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x8o9...bF0__8A4SUhsba

In this part of the game, you can use continue for platinum, don’t be afraid to start from the checkpoint. But if you restart, then it’s better not to violate the other conditions (don’t kill, don’t waste time, etc.), while when starting from a checkpoint, the time is taken into account only up to the checkpoint. That is, using only a restart, obtaining S rank is possible.

If you use a parasite suit and a cartridge for armor, rank S is given anyway, it can help in battles with Sahelanthropus, Archaea, etc.

After completing a mission for the first time, I do not recommend playing it again specifically to get an S rank. It is better to complete all the tasks first, since very often after completing all the tasks you will automatically receive an S rank.

in addition to the playlist from powerpix.

90% of the time he takes his horse on missions, DON'T DO THIS. It’s better to take a dog, which will once again mark your enemy/hostage and this will save you a huge amount of time. after all, the location of the enemies somehow changes from time to time. Use the horse only if you have thorough knowledge of the mission being performed.

To achieve S rank in a mission, you need to get 130,000 points or more. what rank s consists of.

1) execution speed is the most important thing
2) injuries received - they should not exist at all
3) the use of rapid is allowed, but when you use it you will not get the missing 10k points, and in some cases this can be a critical decision (for example, you get 126,000 and you have to restart)
4) the absence of murders and the absence of anxiety is an ideal to strive for

You can kill, but it will damage your rating and you will not receive a bonus at the end of the mission

5) the use of artillery shelling and other helicopter features other than ammunition is prohibited
6) BE SURE TO SKIP THE CUTS - they count towards the overall mission score

In almost all missions I recommend you a sniper rifle with a tranquilizer and a silencer. They may burn you, but you will definitely get an extra bonus for not killing.

I advise you to start with the most difficult ones (extreme/autonomy/invisibility), while your hand is full from the final missions.

be sure to get a portal fulton and a hand of jahuti. in the first case, no one will be able to interrupt your fulton; in the second case, you can grab fully armored soldiers from a distance of about 10 meters.

Focus exclusively on the speed run... it gives the main amount of points... everything else can be skipped from time to time, because if the mission is completed in a minimum amount of time, then there will be a large margin of points. In the mission "Metal Archaea" Extreme, take the Brennan LRS-46 sniper rifle, it takes out skulls very well, better than any other grenade launcher or rocket launcher. Passed without Quite myself very quickly in 6 minutes. In “Surrounded by Silence” Extreme, the easiest and fastest way to do this is, as soon as you appear, run from the left along the river straight to Quite, drive it from its original position, climb onto this column, place a bunch of sleep mines there and return back to your point. Wait until she returns to her previous position...if the mines were placed correctly and she sat down correctly, she will immediately fall asleep. Here you have the S rank and the stun condition without firearms or lethal weapons.

I’ll add a little to the extreme with the silent one - drive her away from the original position and see where she lands. Die or checkpoint. That’s where you need to put mines. Then climb onto the column along the crevice and drive her away. But this time she will land at a different point - sneak up and throw a sleeping grenade - it jumps right on the mines. Delov for 5 mines - rank S and all the conditions are met! Don’t forget to mark the wolfhound.
