How to unlock the War Buddy achievement in METAL GEAR SOLID V: THE PHANTOM PAIN - Definitive Guide

Minor Story Spoilers

You are only able to acquire Quiet during Mission 11.
Once she's at Mother Base, return there after each mission, until you get a cutscene where Miller stops her from accompanying you on a mission. This happened to me after completing Mission 12. Complete a few more missions (for me it was after completing Mission 14), and Ocelot will ask you to come back to base. After you talk to him, Quiet will now be an available buddy.

Once you have her as a buddy, simply take her with you on every mission, side op, or free roam you do. As with the other buddies, using her will increase her bond with you. Once you max her bond rating, the achievement will unlock.

You can check your bond level with your buddies by highlighting them on the Select Buddy option in the Mission Prep screen, or upon completing a Mission on the bottom left of the ranking screen.

To use Quiet's scouting and overwatch abilities, go to the map screen on your iDroid and press up/down on the d-pad until the "Scout" or "Attack" option is chosen. It works similar to the helicopter extraction points, as you can only have her go to predetermined points on the map. As you increase her bond, you will unlock more commands and equipment to use with her. To use her commands, hold cn_LB and use the cn_RS to choose a command. Click the cn_RS to issue that command.

Same. My achievement says "Unlocking...." but it still hasn't unlocked.

Bodhi, that sounds like issue with your Xbox. Achievements have been doing this since day 1, and can take anywhere from a day to weeks to unlock. It's not something you've done wrong in the game.

Puma, do you have the Butterfly emblem on? If so, try removing it and going into a mission then evac out via Pequod. The other solution says that happens, but I can't confirm it since I didn't put the emblem on until after I got the achievement.

The achievement moved to "Done!... Unlocking." today so I will just wait.

You obtain Quiet inside of mission 11. After you do a few main missions (for me it was at mission 15's unlock) you'll get a side-op to visit her at Mother Base. Do it and when you extract you'll have her added to your buddy roster after a cutscene.
Now this is quite an easy achievement to get, it just takes some time to do. Please note that this is a similar solution that I'm posting in the other two bond achievements as well.
Now how do you increase the bond of a buddy (sans D-Walker as it is a robot)? Well you do main missions with them as well as side-ops running around the overworld of Afghanistan and Africa. Now you can see their progress at the end of main missions as well as at the sortie screen. IF in fact you do have the meter all filled up but the achievement didn't pop because you got all your buddy progress (or got the last bit needed by doing a side-op) you need to redeploy and then extract yourself inside of freeroam via helicopter, do not just return to ACC after you hit a checkpoint because the achievement will not unlock. Once the game gets back to the loading screen the achievement should unlock.
Do note that you can decrease the bond if you get your buddies "killed", as they will be extracted, by either enemy fire or friendly fire primarily from explosives.

EDIT: If you get 100% bond rating by the time you reach mission 44
. If you wish to keep her after that, you need to equip the Butterfly emblem motif to your emblem. By doing this this prevents her from reaching 100% bonding by stopping it at 90%, but it also prevents you from the event that I have spoilered out. So either you equip the emblem and
her and miss out on the achievement, or you just get the achievement, your call.

I'm curious if I have done something wrong. I haven't purchased any weapons or costumes for quiet, but it shows that I have a 100 bond but this achievement hasn't popped for me. Am I missing a step?

Deploy, complete a side-op, extract via helicopter. It should unlock then.

Same. Mine says "Unlocking..." but it still hasn't unlocked. I've done side ops and main missions but nothing has changed.

If you've got that sit tight, it takes time for the server to verify that you've met the requirements. I had this issue so many times in the MCC. If it still doesn't unlock tweet @XboxSupport and they'll redirect you to a site where you can report the error on the achievement specifically.

Having the butterfly emblem equipped does NOT prevent you from getting 100% bond--I just did it. Also, no achievement in this game is missable; I can change emblems at any time after rescuing Huey to unlock Side Ops 150 & Mission 45 to complete Quiet's storyline.

Once you have unlocked Quiet, just start bringing her out on missions and Side Ops. In the buddy menu in the Missions tab, you can tell her to move to different Scout and Attack positions. With Scout, she can survey outposts and bases for you beforehand, pointing out some enemies and items of interest. With Attack, you choose a position for her to wait, and by holding cn_L1 and choosing Fire, she'll shoot the enemy you're currently pointing at with your reticle if it's possible for her to do so from her position.

I recommend bringing her with you wherever you go. If you tend to go for a stealthy, no-kill approach, start by just using her to Scout out areas for you. Eventually, you can develop new snipers for her as your bond increases that tranq instead of kill and that have suppressors. The more you Scout and Attack with her, the faster your bond will increase.

NOTE: At time of writing this, taking her with you on missions 29 and 42 can result in a game breaking bug, so be sure not do that.

After gaining access a buddy, you can develop a bond with them. With all buddies, bonds are measured out of 10. You can view your progress with each bond at the end of each mission, in the bottom left corner of the results screen. Each buddy has different methods of increasing their bonds. D-Horse's bond is increased by riding him and carrying prisoners and incapacitated enemy soldiers on his back. For D-Dog, your bond will be increased automatically by having him follow you around and mark enemies on missions. Finally, for Quiet, her bond is increased by using and the to give her commands. After you unlock her 'Cover Me' command, your bond will increase automatically as long as 'Cover Me' is turned on.

The trophies will pop at the ends of missions where you increased their bonds to 10/10. Of note is that Side Ops and free roam seem to count less when attempting to develop bonds, so if you need to increase it with a particular buddy, repeatedly play missions where you would use them often. Also, when a buddy is harmed, their bond with you decreases, so don't send them into unnecessary danger.

You will gain access to Quiet as a buddy after choosing to spare her life at the end of mission 11, "Cloaked in Silence." Then, she will be deployable a short time after Mission 14. Quiet acts as one of the most versatile buddies in the game, supplying you with ammo drops and providing cover fire from tactical sniping points.

In order to increase bonds with your buddies to the maximum level, you will need to use them constantly during main missions and side ops. After a main mission, you will notice on the bottom left-hand side of the post-mission stat screen your buddy’s progress bars, indicated by ten Diamond Dog logos. As you increase your bonds with each buddy, you will unlock special commands for them that will further improve their usefulness out on the field. For example, D-Horse can defecate on command as a means of applying a “booby trap” on roads for patrolling vehicles, D-Dog can kill, stun, or wound enemies nearby on command, and Quiet can be told to fire at will and essentially clear out an entire enemy encampment on her own without you ever being spotted.

Take note of two specifics concerning this achievement. First, if your buddies get injured out on the field by the enemy or by your own actions, your bond level will slightly decrease. Secondly, if you notice their progress bar in the pre-mission sortie prep screen is at 10/10 but you have not unlocked their achievement, you will need to deploy in free-roam with them, then extract via chopper as you probably previously choose the option to “Return to ACC” which doesn’t register their bond level properly.

Remember; simply keep using your buddies during missions and their bond will slowly increase over time. Once a buddy’s bond is maxed out at 10/10, their achievement will unlock.

The key to getting it is to take the girl on a mission and don't forget to look at her breasts in the helicopter before disembarking.

We take Silent One with us on additional missions, give her a sleep rifle (with or without a silencer - it makes no difference), give the command to cover you and have fun, occasionally commanding her to shoot.

Also to increase your connection score:
We visit her at the base in a cage (the connection will go up a couple of times, and then stop),
We design things and clothes for her,
We give her orders in battle more often.
And yes, we stare at her in the helicopter, pressing , in ACC and in landing on the map (there will be literally a couple of seconds to have time to stare, she must nod).

The fastest way to do this is in a simple way - we develop a dream rifle for it, then we capture any soldier (without a helmet) and give the order to shoot, the soldier falls, with a slight movement of the foot we bring him to his senses, and so on until the achievement falls
