Relatively early on, you will be allowed to build some farms for your base. Potatoes, Onions and corn will be on this list. Build one then wait.
*Note: You will want people in base development team, they will tend to the harvest.
*Note: You need to find the item you are going to grow before you can grow it. The first is the potato. When yo go to the helicopter crash and rescue the nurse by the ambulance. Bring her to the nearest teleporter in the encampment to the north. (It has a wall with a door and turrets inside). There is a trash pile in the center of the camp with a refrigerator in it. There you will find 3 potatoes.

Once you can build farms, you can grow vegetables and medicinal herbs. You need to collect one of each vegetable first before you can plant and grow them, obviously. You'll probably find them playing through the story and exploring the map. If you can't find them, you will also be able to send your exploration team to find them.
