How to unlock the Metro dweller achievement in Metro 2033 - Definitive Guide
In the end this achievement didn't pop for me until I reached Riga station. In the scene where you are drinking vodka and they are toasting you. I got up from the table and stood and listened to the people in that room and it popped.
I suspect there must be a counter that increases for every conversation you listen to or object you interact with. I'm not exactly sure what specific things cause it to count up but if you just make sure to do everything you possibly can then this should pop.
first play-trough. But with a little logical thinking ;-) i got it: i quote the
achievement: "A true metro citizen. You know everyone and have
seen everything." So i started from the level hunter again, and i finally
found what to do to get this Achievement: Just start from the level
'Hunter' and talk to everyone, knock on every door (multiple times)
and listen to what the people have to say. even listen to conversations
between other persons. sometimes you'll get a white 'flashback' like
flash (i think these are the ones you'll need). Talk to the doctor, the
people waiting at the entrance etc. search every store and look at
everyone a couple of seconds and wait until they start talking and
let them finish (or keep pressing X together with looking at them).
Repeat this process in the next level (Chapter 2 - Exhibition).
My advice is to continue playing from Hunter to Exhibition my
experience in quiting and selecting the next level is that it results
in not getting the Achievement. Also take extra care in listening to
all the conversations here, Give the man the money/cartridges
for the medicine (the man on the bench next to the teddy and
women). in the diner/bar there are two man negotiating about a deal
listen to them first then get close he tells you to get lost, stay
anyway and listen to their short conversation; you'll get another
'flashback' moment here.
After passing the guitar playing resident enter the half closed room,
here you will encounter your stepfather, talk to him by pressing X
and let him finish, repeat this a couple of times until you can't start
another conversation, then get to the train-cart en talk to the
"captain-like-guy" let him finish and tell him that you are NOT READY.
He will tell you something like "Get your gear, you'll have a minute".
After this, return to your stepfather and talk to him again. This was the
'flashback' moment where i got my achievement.
Also keep in mind that i helped-out all the homeless/hobbo's i
encountered on my journey (also in my first play-trough).
I really hope this guide helps some people out, because for me
it was a pain in the ass this achievement.
Have fun hunting and good luck.
All I did was take my time [slowly] exploring ALL around the first [and second] Metro stations. If I heard people talking to each other, I stopped and listened until they were finished with their story. [I even waited around a bit longer to see if they would talk some more.] I also clicked X on just about everyone to see if they would talk with me. [I gave bullets to everyone that asked, even the jerks that didn't deserve it.] The last thing I did was try to open every shack door. [If I was able to knock on a door, I would continue knocking several times, especially if someone replied.] Only one person actually opened their door, but he was "busy" with his lady friend.
[As you carefully observe your surroundings and take your time listening to every conversation, you should occasionally receive a screen flash and water drop sound. As others have mentioned, there appears to be an internal counter keeping track of what you do, see and hear.]
I was surprised when I got the achievement. I wasn't trying for it. It popped on my first play through.
Good luck!

NOTE: You should still start on the level "Hunter" just as the video instructs and follow everything it does just in case
I followed the above YouTube video to a tee and I received the achievement -in- Exhibition Station; apparently there is a location that the video missed in Exhibition: at approximately 6:40 in the first video ,near the old woman sweeping the floor, there is a door seemingly hidden by the clothes-lines and the rusty metal on the walls.
Press "X" on the left side of the wall (when you are facing the stairway) until a man opens the door. This is the location where the achievement popped for me, as a metro denizen opened up his door, and told Artyon that "he needed some rest." I received confirmation shortly after he opened the door and spoke his line of script.
Also, the order that you talk/explore objects in doesn't matter, as I did all the steps in videos 1 & 2 (except the ones in Riga) and received the achievement: I had done everything up until the point where the video transitions to Riga, and then went back and to the "hidden" door where the man opened it and I got the achievement.
Normally this step would be taken during the first video at 6:40, but I did this step last instead of at that time.
If you go downstairs in Riga, you've gone too far. According to others, it's still possible to get the achievement at a later time, but this is the most concrete guide that I can create.
My achievement in market popped in the bar. I approached the bar and saw a hookah (tall smoking pipe) and I activated it. I suffered a slowdown/drug effect and once it finished the achievement popped. Good luck.
A lot of people suspecting some kind of counter, and Andrzej81 noticed the audiovisual cue (ie the flash and waterdrop sounds)
Putting 2 + 2 together, I think it's safe to assume these audiovisual cues are to signal the gaining of 'Discovery Points' as mentioned in this PC guide for Metro 2033 ( http://www.gamefaqs.com/xbox360/935091-metro-2033/faqs/59427 )
Also, I suspect (because people are getting this in all sorts of different places) that these Discovery Points carry between plays.
I guess you could try following the above linked guide to Discovery Points, or simply - as TJHanson did - play that first metro area as immersively as you can. But either way, you're definitely looking out for the screen effect, and the little water drop sound.
This achievement unlocks and different times, for different people. After the "Prologue" you can wonder around "Exhibition" and "Riga". As you start out press on every door you can, and listen to every single conversation going going on. Once you encounter someone new stop for a moment and listen to what they have to say.
If you knock on all the doors and listen to all the conversations you will unlock this in the bar when you get to "Riga". You will still need to listen to several conversations but the achievement will unlock soon after.
