How to unlock the Metro dweller achievement in Metro 2033 - Definitive Guide

I stood and listened to every single person in the station until they were done talking. I knocked on every door in the place, only two people opened their doors for me briefly, some others just slept, or cried, or told me to go away. But keep knocking on the same doors to exhaust every possible line of text they might have. I played with the two guitars, one is yours in your room, one is the one next to the man and his son playing with toys. I turned every light on and off that I could.

In the end this achievement didn't pop for me until I reached Riga station. In the scene where you are drinking vodka and they are toasting you. I got up from the table and stood and listened to the people in that room and it popped.

I suspect there must be a counter that increases for every conversation you listen to or object you interact with. I'm not exactly sure what specific things cause it to count up but if you just make sure to do everything you possibly can then this should pop.

I agree with the counter theory, as for me this popped in the area where my character is drinking vodka. It popped when I changed the record at the bar.

Good job. I think you may be right about the counter. The "Explorer: 'There is no place in metro you did not visit'" achievement popped for me yesterday as I was exploring a random tunnel. Since I try to go everywhere I can (searching for ammo, etc.) and I'm not even close to the end of the game, I suspect a counter is being used as well.

Got mine today after giving spare ammo to a poor man before you meet bourbon and that kid that offers to guide you to him for 1 bullet.

Got mine last nite in the first part of the game, just after the armory and after talking to the man who gives you your first task (before heading into the tunnel). As stated, take your time, listen to everyone, turn off every lamp, buy the med kit from the first vendor, give ammo to the guy who wants to help his kid, anytime you see an icon - press A!

Just wanted to +1 that it is completely possible to unlock this at the end of CH. 1 (when speaking to your stepfather in his office). I exhausted every dialogue and conversation, interacted with all doors and lights, and collected all ammunition and it popped immediately after he mentions Hunter and warns you not to be reckless.

Got mine in Chapter 2 Part 1: Riga. In the area with the people behind a barrier, talking to the guy standing there. This is in the area before talking to the kid, just below the bar area. This area is past the archway with the beggars.

I don't understand... I'm about to beat the game, and I've interacted with everything I could possible find.
Even followed a guide on youtube. Still nothing. This is like my fifth time going for this achievement. What the hell, seriously!?

Got it in the 5th Mission after listening to the old man's story and the little boy runs off. Thought it was some other achievement for listening to the old man's story and then it's Metro dweller lol.

Got mine at knocking on a door (think there are 3 actually) at the VERY beginning of the armory level even before entering the room where the guy is getting interogated and prior to the chase.

Yes there is a counter!! Played through the game 9 months ago and started a new playthrough yesterday with a video-guide. Achievement popped before I left exhibition - exactly after I talked to the guy in the little "office" who tells you something about hunter.

I literally got this in Exhibition (Chapter 1, Part 1: Let the journey begin)! laugh

I spoke to everyone/listened to every conversation and interacted with everything I could multiple times. I basically spammed X everywhere. I also made sure I interacted with anything that appeared to be a door or light or anything I could manipulate. Before hopping on the trolley, I went back through the market area and found there were a few more conversations that had opened up (I noticed a few residents had left as well). This is after you pick up your gear from the armory. I also apparently missed a guy sitting on a chair above where you donate the ammo to help the sick child (next to a teddy bear shortly after entering the area). I'm not sure if it mattered but I also went to the shooting range and took out every target I could (bottles, stuffed animals, pots/pans, boots, etc.).

In addition, I had used the same tactics in the very first "real" chapter after the prologue (the first time you leave your room). There were several conversations and doors/objects you could interact with/listen to before you get to the room with Hunter (several of these give you "good" moral points/flashes as well).

It did took me a long time to figure this one out, i didn't got it on my
first play-trough. But with a little logical thinking ;-) i got it: i quote the
achievement: "A true metro citizen. You know everyone and have
seen everything." So i started from the level hunter again, and i finally
found what to do to get this Achievement: Just start from the level
'Hunter' and talk to everyone, knock on every door (multiple times)
and listen to what the people have to say. even listen to conversations
between other persons. sometimes you'll get a white 'flashback' like
flash (i think these are the ones you'll need). Talk to the doctor, the
people waiting at the entrance etc. search every store and look at
everyone a couple of seconds and wait until they start talking and
let them finish (or keep pressing X together with looking at them).
Repeat this process in the next level (Chapter 2 - Exhibition).

My advice is to continue playing from Hunter to Exhibition my
experience in quiting and selecting the next level is that it results
in not getting the Achievement. Also take extra care in listening to
all the conversations here, Give the man the money/cartridges
for the medicine (the man on the bench next to the teddy and
women). in the diner/bar there are two man negotiating about a deal
listen to them first then get close he tells you to get lost, stay
anyway and listen to their short conversation; you'll get another
'flashback' moment here.

After passing the guitar playing resident enter the half closed room,
here you will encounter your stepfather, talk to him by pressing X
and let him finish, repeat this a couple of times until you can't start
another conversation, then get to the train-cart en talk to the
"captain-like-guy" let him finish and tell him that you are NOT READY.
He will tell you something like "Get your gear, you'll have a minute".
After this, return to your stepfather and talk to him again. This was the
'flashback' moment where i got my achievement.

Also keep in mind that i helped-out all the homeless/hobbo's i
encountered on my journey (also in my first play-trough).

I really hope this guide helps some people out, because for me
it was a pain in the ass this achievement.

Have fun hunting and good luck.

Concerning your warning about not picking up the bullets out of the guitar player's helmet; it's false. You can and should pick up those bullets. I have done it on four different accounts and every single time the achievement popped even after picking up the bullets. That flash is an Immoral point towards you, but it does not take away from your Dicovery points. And considering there is another achievement for finding all of the Military Grade ammo, do not leave that ammo behind.

Okay thank you for the message, i removed the warning part now. i think it just glitched then when i played it.
Maybe they fixed it now, or i was just unlucky back then ;-)
Anyway thanks for the heads up so i could improve my Guide a little more.
please don't forget to thumbs up if you like the (rest) of the solution. Thank you

Metro Dweller achievement: "A true metro citizen. You know everyone and have seen everything."

All I did was take my time [slowly] exploring ALL around the first [and second] Metro stations. If I heard people talking to each other, I stopped and listened until they were finished with their story. [I even waited around a bit longer to see if they would talk some more.] I also clicked X on just about everyone to see if they would talk with me. [I gave bullets to everyone that asked, even the jerks that didn't deserve it.] The last thing I did was try to open every shack door. [If I was able to knock on a door, I would continue knocking several times, especially if someone replied.] Only one person actually opened their door, but he was "busy" with his lady friend.

[As you carefully observe your surroundings and take your time listening to every conversation, you should occasionally receive a screen flash and water drop sound. As others have mentioned, there appears to be an internal counter keeping track of what you do, see and hear.]

I was surprised when I got the achievement. I wasn't trying for it. It popped on my first play through.

Good luck!

Could you give a bit more information? Do you mean just talk to everyone in the first station (His hometown)? Also when does it unlock, when you talk to the last person or at the end of the level?

Ok, thanks. From reading your description and a few others, it seems you just need to talk to a certain amount of people (and knock on enough doors?) I'll start a new playthrough today, hopefully I can get it.

Before you start a whole new play through the "Load" option on the main menu is actually a chapter select, incase you don't want to replay the "Tower" intro.

I just replayed this part of the story and did EVERYTHING. Knocked on all doors, played my instrument, hit X in front of everyone multiple times, and it didn't unlock for me. Either when I talked to the last sentry or at the end of the level. Seems you got lucky, TJ. :-)

OK, I have some more information that may help. I took another stab at this, but this time I restarted from Prologue, which I didn't do before. This is the flash-forward at the beginning of the game where you start by climbing the ladder with Miller. When you're in this area, there are some doors you can knock on, rooms to go in, lights to turn off, etc. There's aren't many but there are some. I did all this, PLUS all the other stuff at the beginning of Exhibition Station. This time, when I got to the point where I went into Artyom's dad's office to talk to him, the achievement popped.

I got this around the guy playing the guitar where the golden bullets are in his pot. Just make sure you talk to everyone and kock on every door at least 5 times. I played the game from the very start (i.e. prologue onwards) I must have been on the exhibition level for at least 45 minutes watching and listening etc

Hey, thanks for this. One thing i did notice which may be of help to people who are struggling. The screen flashes when you have added to the counter, i noticed this all the way through from the prologue up until i met Artyoums dad just before you get on the caravan. As soon as I had spoken to his dad(or whoever he is) there was a flash and "pop" the acheivemnet unlocked! Hope this may help ;-)

I was at the area where people were waiting to in a line to board some rail cars. It unlocked when one of the guards spoke to me and said my name. I didn't actually do much talking, just listening to other people tell stories to each other.

Maybe someone else can give a better description of what they did to get it. I was just exploring and listening - trying to absorb as much of the atmosphere and background information as I could. Like I said, I was surprised to get the achievement. I just posted what I remembered because someone else asked me how I got it.

This achievement can be acquired on the level "Let The Journey Begin (Exhibition Station)".

NOTE: You should still start on the level "Hunter" just as the video instructs and follow everything it does just in case

I followed the above YouTube video to a tee and I received the achievement -in- Exhibition Station; apparently there is a location that the video missed in Exhibition: at approximately 6:40 in the first video ,near the old woman sweeping the floor, there is a door seemingly hidden by the clothes-lines and the rusty metal on the walls.

Press "X" on the left side of the wall (when you are facing the stairway) until a man opens the door. This is the location where the achievement popped for me, as a metro denizen opened up his door, and told Artyon that "he needed some rest." I received confirmation shortly after he opened the door and spoke his line of script.

Also, the order that you talk/explore objects in doesn't matter, as I did all the steps in videos 1 & 2 (except the ones in Riga) and received the achievement: I had done everything up until the point where the video transitions to Riga, and then went back and to the "hidden" door where the man opened it and I got the achievement.

Normally this step would be taken during the first video at 6:40, but I did this step last instead of at that time.

i dont know if this got anything to do with this achievement but i noticed every time your done listening to people around you (or just got done checking some areas) there is a sound and flash like the game is telling you that - that particular conversation is save to some hidden stats towards this achievement... i hope this helps.

After extensive research on this achievement, I can confirm some of what the guides say above. Start the level "Hunter", then just simply press "X" on every character, door (especially the numbered ones in exhibition), light, and instrument (there should be 2 guitars [Exhibition], a piano [Riga] and a record player [Riga]) that you come across. Make sure that you press X on each character until they no longer say anything to you. When you get to Riga, after you get through the scene with the Vodka celebration, turn around and play the piano pay 1 bullet to change the song on the record player on the bar table. Then, talk to the bartender and the people at the bar. Last but not least, go over to the people sitting at the tables in the corner and spam X until you can get them to talk to you. The achievement should pop when you talk to the guy that's sitting at a table with 2 other people, his seat is in between the 2 tables in the corner. This is the same person I have seen multiple other people get the achievement on.

If you go downstairs in Riga, you've gone too far. According to others, it's still possible to get the achievement at a later time, but this is the most concrete guide that I can create.

I have read pretty much all of these guides and I would like to say that I did everything for the first two metro stations, hitting X on all the doors, stopping to listen to conversations (but sometimes I would get bored and move one). Playing the guitar. Playing the piano. I even paid a bullet to change the record (track) in one of the bars. I was done with the first two metro stations and went through the tunnels with bourbon. Then we made it to market. I figured I wasn't getting this achievement.

My achievement in market popped in the bar. I approached the bar and saw a hookah (tall smoking pipe) and I activated it. I suffered a slowdown/drug effect and once it finished the achievement popped. Good luck.

Trying to clear up a little of the confusion about this achievement..

A lot of people suspecting some kind of counter, and Andrzej81 noticed the audiovisual cue (ie the flash and waterdrop sounds)

Putting 2 + 2 together, I think it's safe to assume these audiovisual cues are to signal the gaining of 'Discovery Points' as mentioned in this PC guide for Metro 2033 ( http://www.gamefaqs.com/xbox360/935091-metro-2033/faqs/59427 )

Also, I suspect (because people are getting this in all sorts of different places) that these Discovery Points carry between plays.

I guess you could try following the above linked guide to Discovery Points, or simply - as TJHanson did - play that first metro area as immersively as you can. But either way, you're definitely looking out for the screen effect, and the little water drop sound.

I walked very slowly through the second part of the prologue making sure to interact with every single little thing, then did the same in in part 1 of chapter 1, then right at the beginning of chapter 2 after doing the interactions in the barroom the achievement popped for me, being only my fourth achievement in the game. So I'm guessing that as long as you're thorough enough in your exploration, you will get this achievement very early on. Hope this helps someone.

This achievement unlocks and different times, for different people. After the "Prologue" you can wonder around "Exhibition" and "Riga". As you start out press on every door you can, and listen to every single conversation going going on. Once you encounter someone new stop for a moment and listen to what they have to say.

If you knock on all the doors and listen to all the conversations you will unlock this in the bar when you get to "Riga". You will still need to listen to several conversations but the achievement will unlock soon after.
