How to unlock the Sterling Effort achievement in Metro 2033 - Definitive Guide

I found it easier on the level "Bridge". After you follow Bourbon and have to use the mask first time, you will go up on the stairs. Take the mask off and walk in front of the train, turn around 180 degrees and walk till the edge of the path. A Nosalise will show up. Kill it and then just turn around and run to the train again, turn and walk back. Each time you will trigger 1 Nosalise.

You can work towards all X kills achievements, coz each time you have to deal with only 1 Nosalise.

I'm at 57 kills and counting, at the bridge spawn area but nothing is popping yet. Anybody else with this issue?

I can confirm that this method is both easy and safe for your character. Fighting only one at a time keeps you from being overwhelmed, but going for 50 takes a bit of time. (~10 minutes) Great solution!

Just a tip to make this easier. When low on health, instead of waiting, crouch underneath the left steel support beam (left when looking at the spot the nosalise comes from). The metal bar and support beam will protect from most of the nosalise attacks. Also while I was staying in this spot not one of them could jump me.

Let them pounce on you to use the quick time events to stab them. This is much quicker than slashing at them and you don't have to worry about losing health. I can confirm this works as I got nearly all of my 50 knife kills doing this.

Lamb3ntSpartan make sure you have the Ranger Pack DLC Installed. +1 to ICE Faux Pirate just stand still and let them pounce, much quicker and easier.

This is a fairly straightforward achievement; all you have to do is kill any combination of Nosalises and Lurkers to a count of fifty with your trench/combat knife for this.

***Edit: i5cent has caught that this achievement is only obtainable while having the Ranger pack DLC***
[My apologies for not noticing this earlier, as this being part of DLC slipped my mind as I was working on this.]

The best place I found for this to grind at is in the level "Cursed Station" where you must collapse the tunnels to stop the Nosalises. If you simply don't place the two bombs, there are infinite mutants. Then pick one of the two spawn areas and hide behind some rubble so they can't pounce you when they run up.
(I'm fairly sure that the quick-time event for a Nosalis pounce DOES NOT count toward this.)

It can be very annoying though to grind for 'X' amount of time by just slashing and hacking, so you may want to start at the level "Child" and kill all of the Lurkers to shorten the duration later on.

Good hunting fellow achievement grabbers, this one takes a lot of patience!

By chance, do you know if you have to buy the dlc in order to get this achievement? Or can it be earned normally?

@ShadyZ93, maybe you should post that in the solution so people like me don't waste time trying to get something they can't.

Who would have thought you needed the DLC to get an achievement under the DLC section of the achievement list.

DLC or not, this solution stands. As you said, its the user's responsibility to know this is DLC not yours to point out.

@YEME7H Thank you for the input and the affirmation of my stance. I guess some people are just too stubborn to appreciate when a guide is written for them and would rather complain about minor issues. Strange world I guess.

Even with DLC installed - can u earn the achievement on easy or does it have to be in the ranger modes?

By rotorschnee on 24 Aug 2011 04:58
@rotorschnee If I'm not mistaken, it should be unlockable while on easy. The ranger mode should be completely separate from this. If not, I apologize for my hazy memory.

@BeatboxingKing What things have you tried so far to obtain this achievement? At first glance, I would say you might have a glitched achievement, in which case I can provide no further assistance. Feel free to message my Gamertag at any time and I can try to help you out in a more direct manner.

You need to have the DLC installed. Any difficulty.

You may want to note to start on "Defense," since there are a ton of Lurkers there, and then it goes right into "Child." Lots more opportunities to kill easy mutants, after the initial battle sequence.

DLC is installed, playing on cursed station - easy, killed around 75 Nasalies (approx. 10 died by LT swing rather than RT swing [shouldn't matter right?])

whats the deal?

I think this is glitched on me as well. I built my own personal graveyard of those mutants, and nothing. Tried to play on and kill more and more of them, yet the achievement never unlocked.

Same here, I have definitely killed more than 50, used the method of the other guide but that shouldn't matter. I think the possible thing that glitches this achievement is that, I played through this game, then I bought the DLC and then I only loaded the chapter and started killing. It might be that as the save I loaded didn't have the DLC "in it" so it doesn't count until I start a new game...

Just here to confirm that on a new playthrough I got the achievement without problems so it propably won't work if you have a save that's made before you get the dlc

I can confirm that the QTEs DO count towards this achievement. I was grinding for this, and once I got the achievement for 20 kills with the knife (I know I didn't kill any humans with the knife), I started diligently counting the knife kills, and at one point I got a QTE, but I chose not to count it. Eventually, when I reached 49 by my count, the achievement popped. Therefore, it must have counted the QTE as a valid kill towards the achievement.

I can also confirm the QTE's do work. This is much quicker than slashing at them and you don't have to worry about losing health. I got nearly all of my 50 knife kills doing this.

@Daniel Hades I do make mistakes on occasion unlike your perfect self. Maybe it hadn't occurred to you that I didn't actually read it was in the DLC section when I originally scrolled down to this achievement and wrote this. In fact, it's the achievement hunter's responsibility to see this is in the DLC section in the first place. If it already says it in the header, why do I need to write it within my guide???

@i5cent Sorry about that, I didn't even notice that this was for the DLC when writing it, but I have made the proper change and you have my thanks for helping to amend this solution.

For those having trouble getting this to pop: Killing the same respawning enemies in "Cursed" or even "Bridge" never worked for me. I must have killed 200 between the two levels. Instead, I started a new game on Rnager Easy (and then changed it Easy after the prologue) and played through the game killing as many mutants with the knife as I could. I unlocked it part way through "Defense".

This achievement is a pretty good reason to start on Ranger Easy first, as you will be taking quite a bit of damage while trying to stab enemies to death. While you can finish off enemies with the knife that you softened up with a gun, it's less reliable if you constantly kill the target with the gun on accident. Luckily, the alternate attack can be quite powerful if you aim properly (note: throwing knives do not count for this, primary or alternative fire).

Farming kills - You can effectively farm kills for this alongside the Volt Driver kills at the top of the escalator outside of the Cursed Station (See "Stunning" for more detail).

Kill 50 M U T A N T O V with a knife. And not throwing. It's easy to get into kikimoras in the "Child" chapter.

You can also do it at Turgenevskaya station, before blowing up the tunnels, when you are standing with Khan and three other residents. If the tunnel is not blown up, then you can fill it by pulling the monster along the way. Monsters run out with short breaks. Enough time to heal.

When you are at the Turgenevskaya level, do not blow up the tunnel and the hermetic seal, but run into the right tunnel; endless waves of ghouls will run towards you
