How to unlock the A Man of Principle achievement in Metro Exodus - Definitive Guide

A man of Principle.

You must earn the Captains trust by the end of game. Very easy to do. A few places though can easily be missed including one of the most important.

Throughout Sam’s journey you’ll be accompanied by the Captain who will give you tasks to do. One task is related to an achievement.

Metro ExodusTrapperThe Trapper achievement in Metro Exodus worth 32 pointsSet all 5 traps in the SAM'S STORY chapter as the Captain requests.

When you do something for the Captain, a flash of light will go off on the screen. Similar to the good moral points that you do in the main game.

Also make sure you have Hints turned on in your options menu otherwise you’ll miss some of these.

These are the things in order:

That’s strange! This is exactly what I did to earn the captains trust. On the last segment of the game. He’s dialogue mentions the time you first met him and put your gun down. And how you found he’s missing friends. I’ll speed run the DLC tomorrow and try everything again just to make sure!

The prompt for putting down your gun is only brief so you’ll want to do it as fast as possible. Sam will mention he means no harm and that he was the one that helped him with the bandits

Gave you an uptick.
On my first playthrough missed the foggy silo area where the 3 crew members corpses are found.

Could be that your hints aren't on turned on. I got the prompt right at the end as sams holding the charge. I believe the option to blow the sub is by holding down LEFT on the D-PAD.

Or it could be that you didn't earn the Captains trust at the end. You only get the detonator if he can trust you with it.

I went for this yesterday on my first run of the DLC and hit all the steps but it didn't unlock. Turns out I thought I had done the 2nd to last step by finding 5 bodies and a tape recorder which initiated a radio cutscene to the Captian where you get off the boat but there was waaay more to check on that island climbing all the way up to the top for another tape recorder.

Using this video reference I found on YouTube which isn't mine, that step begins at 6:18

I think their are a few bodies on that little island but some are the Caps friends and others are the men that were chasing the caps friends down.
Great video guide though! Hopefully some may use it for reassurance that they got everything on that marshy island.
I'm planning on going back through it again to improve my guide.

I got the detonator, blew up the sub and didn't earn his trust so I don't know.

Last achievement I needed for the full 1500GS on this game. Glad it's over but great game to say the least. I love this series so much!

Yes another dlc would be nice but I'm really hoping the next game in the series dosen't take forever. I wouldn't mind a separate story to the main 3 games. Like Khan being the main character and getting his own game for example. Awesome that Metro is your favorite sp series. It's my 2nd favorite series only behind the Dead space series.

Well, after I was screwed in the main game because no matter what I did, Damir didn't stay with the team, I ended up being screwed again by this so called Captain because although I followed ALL THE STEPS IN THE GUIDE CAREFULLY AND I BLEW THE SUB with the detonator at the end, the achievement didn't pop for me.

I hope I will not encounter such a broken game again in my entire life.
Although I purchased both DLCs I am not even going to touch The Two Colonels because I feel extremely disappointed by these broken achievements.

Strange, do you have hints turned on? Been a while since I played. Will have to go through the dlc myself again to test to see if everything still works.

This didn’t unlock for me after blowing up the sub. Also I didn’t notice a flash of light on the screen after each choice.

Worked like chart in the first run.
However, cheevo unlocked for choosing NOT to detonate the sub, so the final choice doesn't matter. All choices are matter until your reach the sub with the captain, before you go beresrk with Klim's soldiers.

Updated the solution with new information. It was my mistake with the fog area. The first time I played it I checked the area very carefully (in case their were collectibles) and found all of the bodies. Where as the second time I played it I didn’t really check at all, just skipped through the area and picked up the tape on top of the silo and got the flash of light and he’s thanks for finding he’s friends. I’m not sure if I had to actually interact with the other bodies or if walking past them does the trick. Sam will usually say something. Like he mentions that he’s found one and wonders where the rest are. Apologies for the lack of information. Really thought this was it. I’d done it both times on Xbox one ver and Windows 10 and had no problems getting it.

I think there is one interaction missing from the guide and might be why Cpt Rush 1940 didn't unlock it:

After locating the Captain in a building crawling with mutants, he will ask for help in moving a piece of wood. Assist him to receive his thanks and another flash of light.

Hopefully I'm correct and MIK3IDv won't need to speedrun this DLC (trust me, I know the feeling having played it 3 times to unlock everything, lol).

Also, here's a picture showing the location of the tape recorder in fog (https://i.imgur.com/Oh56l8U.png) for anyone wondering about its exact position. Feel free to add it to the guide if you think it would help.

To unlock this achievement, you will need to perform certain actions as you play the story, all pertaining to the captain to get his trust, then at the end of the game you need to choose a certain ending. You will know you have performed an action towards this since the screen will flash as you do something, but otherwise there's no way to track your trust with the captain. There are, however, known actions to take to gain enough trust to unlock this achievement.

These are the actions you need to perform:
  • The first time you meet the captain, face to face you're climbing up a ladder, he will ask you to put your gun down, so hold :1right: to do so.
  • You will eventually be fighting your way through a tower block, making your way up and the captain will be the guy at the top who you find and rescue, of a fashion anyway. As you then make your way with him to the next area, he will ask for help in moving a wooden beam blocking your path, so help him with that.
  • After traveling with the captain on his boat for some time to get to his hideout, you will sit down and share a drink. At one point, he will suggest he is hungry and you can hold :1right: to offer him a can of food.
  • After the night of partying with the captain you will need to make your way down the building to progress and he will ask you to set five traps on your way out. See "Trapper" for details on this, but you must set all five before leaving the building.
  • The captain will at some point have asked you to find his fallen comrades and the opportunity to do this will be when you're in your boat after beating the second Batwing encounter. The water will be foggy and the area you need to go to will not be directly in your path. You need to work your way through the small area here finding the bodies, then at the top/end of the area you can set off an audio recording and then speak to the captain via radio, telling him what you found.
  • The final action you need to take is the choice you make to finish the story. After all is said and done you can either blow the submarine up or let it sail so you can leave for home. You MUST blow the submarine up. This will then end the story and unlock this achievement.

~Highly missable and will require a full chapter run if missed~ ~BUGGY~

Step 1 - When you first meet the Captain. Put your gun down
Step 2 - He will ask you to move a giant wooden block that was used as one of his traps.
Step 3 - Spare the sniper, might not be required but just in case as it's the good option
Step 4 - In the captains hideout, give him food when he moans about not having any (options to use the D-pad will show up)
Step 5 - Sort out his leg. Pretty sure this is part of the story but don't miss the button options
Step 6 - set up all 5 traps as required for Trapper
Step 7 - Find the captains comrades. During the heavy fog part of the chapter, after you've gone through the first building in the boat you'll be heading forward towards the next objective. Turn left and head up until you reach a small area. Follow the path until you find all of the comrades and you will automatically contact the captain. If you've reached the caravan camp you have gone to far.
Step 8 - End game decision, the captain will ask you to do something. Carry this out

Nekov4ego has provided a very in-depth guide and video for this trophy here: LINK

Bug Reports

There are reports that this trophy is not popping even if all the requirements are met and completing the chapter over and over is not working. A console factory reset is so far the only working solution. Head to the Roadmap for an in depth breakdown of all bugs.

This trophy is easy to miss!
To receive the trophy, you will have to earn a positive reputation as a Captain in 5 places.
Here's what you'll need to do:
1) Lower your weapon when you first meet the captain (You will need to do this by pressing very quickly on the d-pad )
2) Help the Captain remove the wooden beam.
3) Give the captain canned food when you set his leg in the shelter. (Press on the cross )
4) Set all five traps at the request of the Captain.
5) Find the captain's lost team and listen to 2 white tape recorders.
6) At the end, blow up the submarine by clicking on the d-pad
Video guide .

PS The sniper you meet in the story can be killed or stunned (It does not affect the trophy)

I don’t know what 3 tape recorders there are, I only had 2:
1. When we land next to a corpse almost
2. Near the first mate
Nothing else.
After listening to the tape recorder, the first mate blinked white.
At the end I received a trophy.

Fanquery's hint is a little incorrect: After 1 tape recorder, you will go a little further and you will see 2 long beetles. After killing them, you will walk across the bent container. After jumping from the container, you will see the second sailor, after which Sam will talk about the first mate. Moving forward a little you will see 2 tape recorders.
I don’t know for sure about the need to listen to it for a trophy, but the fact of its existence is undeniable.

The most important thing is that when you find the captain’s team, be sure to listen to two tape recorders. The fact is that there are only three of them, the last one is played automatically when you find the body of the first mate. This misled me, when I found the first body and listened to the tape recorder, then listened to another one automatically at the end, I thought that I had completed everything, but the trophy did not fall out. It turns out that when you find the second sailor in the vest (Sam will say: “You need to find the first mate”), next to him, on top, there is another tape recorder. Only from the second playthrough I realized this, be careful.

1. Lower your weapon during the first meeting with the captain.
2. Give the captain canned food when you set his leg in the shelter.
3. Set all five traps.
4. Save his team (place on the screen in the previous hint).
5. At the end of the DLC, when there is a choice, press left on the d-pad.

Enemies can be cut, shot, blown up. Stealth is not necessary.

I went through it twice, completed all 5 actions from the previous hint, but I didn’t get it. Alternatively, you should probably help the captain remove the trap that blocks the passage when he asks
