In this video guide I will show you how to craft a new filter while in a hazardous zone, after running out of filters, and while suffocating. Now this can be done as soon as you get to the VOLGA area. I will show a spot that after exploring with Anna during a mission you can head out that same building through a window which is also by some train cars, there is a basement you can enter. Now it seems that you can't just select random radiated areas for the achievement to work, it needs to be an area where it has to somewhat enclosed or in a building. Once in the basement you make a quick so to later load to get the filters back. So after the quick save dismantle all the filters and head into the area to wait out the remaining oxygen to start suffocating, Then just open up your backpack, craft a filter, and then use it to get the achievement. Then reload the quick load to get the filters back.

You can try this in different locations that have a radiation hot spot but for some reason it didn’t work for me in the smaller spots.

I’d say at any point In the game that you come across a mission where you have to wear your gas mask for a longer period of time I would try this.

Note that this does not work in the random hazard zones that slowly kill you if you stand in them for too long.

Once you have your gas mask on and the watch starts counting down the time you have left I’d recommend making a quick save.

Then go to your backpack and dismantle all your filters until you only have one left. Should be below a minute.
My last filter was on 42 seconds.
Then wait for the filter to run out. The game will prompt you on the top right that you’re out of filters. Artyom will start to suffocate.
Quickly go into your satchel and craft ONE filter. Quickly put your only crafted filter on pressing down on the d-pad.

The achievement should then unlock. Quick load to get all your filters back
I did find on the win 10 version that I had to attempt this twice before it unlocked. Do it may take a couple tries.

This can be unlocked on a couple levels in Volga I believe but I didn’t try myself until the Caspian level in a spider liar where I was forced to wear the gas mask for a long period of time.

I made a clip here for example on the windows 10 version while in the spider liar on the Caspian level waiting for Damir to restart the power to the lift.

For people like me who missed this up until the (almost) end of the game:
Right at the beginning of the last level “Dead City” you can easily get this. After arriving in the level, there will be a radiation zone requiring you to wear the mask. Just save your game, deconstruct all filters you may have. Wait until Artyom starts choking and construct a filter. Achievements should pop right away.

Dismantle all filters.

Go to an area where you need a gas mask - bunker on Caspian is best.

Wait for the timer to run out, then craft a filter while you are gasping for breath.

Apply the filter and enjoy your achievement.

In order to do this, you must first be introduced to the crafting materials and the crafting itself. The filter will cost you 10 of the material representing the wrench, and 30 of the material representing the vial. These can be found on dead/knocked out bodies by looting them and dismantling the weapons they drop, and in various chests and toolboxes found scattered out on the wasteland.

Press and hold and then press , let move to the right once with and then craft it by pressing .
