How to unlock the Damir achievement in Metro Exodus - Definitive Guide

A few tips I have on this achievement.

I finished all of the optional side quests (marked on your map by white question marks). I killed a ton of thugs and tribals and let Saul live by knocking him out in the early part of the game. Saul will approach you mid-way through the Caspian level while you are asleep and make an offer to you but from what I saw, nothing transpires from it.

I never knocked out or killed any of the slaves on the level. If you do all of the optional missions and leave them alone, that goes a long way. Don't knock them out and definitely don't kill them.

One of the side missions is in the far northwest of the map; a local is hiding in a little cave within a valley and there are a number of thugs who are trying to get him to lower the rope ladder. I'm not sure if this mission helps with the morality. After you kill or knock out all of the enemies in the area, the local will drop the ladder and promptly kill himself.

Also I don't want to forget that giving the photograph of Giul's mother to Giul probably grants you morality points; whether this is for the end-game or ensuring Damir's survival I'm not entirely sure.

There are a few locations where there are slaves who are being held prisoner; off the top of my head there are two in a cage by the water bucket stage. Release them. At the end-game of the Caspian level when you are visiting the Baron you will see a scripted sequence of a thug who beats a slave and tosses him into an enclosed room. Quickly move in behind him and stun this thug, you will gain moral points for saving the slave and no one outside will know what happened.

There is a similar sequence one floor up in the brothel where a thug is kicking a slave woman. In this instance I did not intervene because I did not want to risk a shootout but she lives and is carried off to the side.

I did all of the above and was netted with the achievement after completion of the level.

Zathazar, you have to replay the whole game from the Volga level unfortunately.

Very strange cause I thought I had done it. Didn’t see Damir die but he wasn’t in the train in the next level 🤔

Hmm. There are a couple of instances where you might accidentally have killed a slave; two of them are wounded and writhing around in pain in front of the lighthouse after Giul shoots them. I did not kill those two.

Also during the prison break-in area where the thugs are watching a dog fight; I killed or knocked out every thug but did not harm any of the slaves. They will panic and freak out and call the guards if they see something amiss but you must never attack them.

Whoever designed this level/achievement request can kiss my **, I did everything by the book and he still leaves... it ruined my entire experience with the game. Sad.

I did everything right except I overlooked the trapped slaves while doing the water truck mission. I thought I could go back for them after dealing with the baron and got on the train.
No such luck, with the level ending after the cutscene.

My question is though, can I choose to replay the level from "chapter select", get him to stay, and continue the rest of the story from there?
Or do I need to replay the whole game?

I did this with a lot less completed just as a note for anyone going back to get this later on. I only freed the salves in the water tanker mission ((never freed slaves in the boat)) and stop the thug beating the slave and hooker before the meeting the baron. Completed minimal map objectives before the baron. I don't think a lot of the other things mention by players need to be done as you don't get the karma screen flash like you do when freeing or helping abused slaves, such as the picture for guil or helping the guy at the cave who kills himself.

Note you definitely do not need the the photograph of Giul's mother in order to unlock the achievement. I did everything mentioned in the guide apart from that and it unlocked for me.

Spared Saul, freed slaves in Oasis and both slave ships, killed thugs in lighthouse and oasis but made extra care not to hit slaves. I killed tribals in hanger. Made oil rig to boss fight without seen and zero knockouts. This time the achievement popped.

Okay, so after 3 attempts I got this to pop.

I ran through the entire last section without killing a single Tribal, and I killed the slaver abusing the one slave (that you can kill silently without your cover being blown.) I then went forward and killed the guys who were abusing the Hooker upstairs and killed everyone there.

Then it actually unlocked. Finally.

This achievement is so BROKE - I’m doing a play though for collectibles and the bad ending, on my way through I was killing EVERY slave I came across, freed a few to just shoot them anyway, anyhow damir still stayed with me right at the end??? Now I’ve to do another entire play through for the evil ending WTF?? I think this must go entirely on freeing slaves, I freed all of them in the broken ship, the one when you steal the oil truck, didn’t even get giul her mother’s picture either ???

I would highly suggest knocking out the thug who is beating up on the hooker at the end. You'll have to knock out another couple enemies but I'm almost positive that's what pushed me over the edge to getting him to stay with me. For reference, I only did a couple of side missions, including the one at the upper north-west of the map and the one in the middle with the giant ship and lots of enemies, and saved three slaves at the very end: there is a slave who is getting kicked while he's in a tent and being told to get up, so I knocked out the thug who was kicking him, but be aware that he will call for the guards like a bitch and you'll have to haul ass out of there into the next section. Then I knocked out the other guy who threw a slave into a room, and lastly, I saved the hooker.

In this video guide I will show you how to get Damir to stay with the crew. There are set requirements to get good karma. First make sure you hurt any slaves, it is best to just knock them out throughout the CASPIAN level. There are a few areas in this video where I show you that you need to free slaves as well. Those are the main points for this requirement. The achievement will pop when Damir hops on the zip line.

To unlock this achievement you need to ensure that Damir remains with the crew at the end of the Caspian level. A list of what needs to be done to ensure this:

  • You cannot kill any slaves throughout the entire level, this includes any that are attacking you such as the slaves that are attacking the light house when you arrive. You can knock them out if you wish, but cannot kill any of them
  • You cannot kill any slaves during the mission with Damir to secure the water tank and later on the fuel tank
  • You need to rescue the slaves in the mission with Damir to secure the water tank, after riding the bucket lift up, see "Roller Coaster" for a location, turn behind you and follow the edge of the cliff, around the lorry and on your left will be a cage with a guard dog asleep in front. Kill the dog, then break the padlock on the cage and release the slaves
  • You need to rescue more slaves during a side mission given to you by Anna. The side mission is to infiltrate a container ship to the North of the map and you will be given the side mission after exiting the Archives and meeting Anna in her lookout post. Make your way through the ship killing everyone, the enemies here aren't slaves so can be killed, then at the top of the area there is a switch to open all of the cages, just in front of a zipline that will take you back towards the beginning of the ship
  • Same as always, don't kill any surrendering enemies and use stealth wherever possible to knock enemies out or avoid them
  • The enemies you kill at the very end of the level when you are confronting the Baron are perfectly fine to be killed and will not void the achievement
You will know you have achieved this during the final confrontation with the Baron at the top of the oil rig when Giul leaves and Damir makes his escape with you.

This can be done via level select, however for it to count towards "Full Strength" it needs to be done during the same full campaign as "Duke" and "Alyosha".

Warning: This is the second trophy linked to Full Strength and ultimately the good ending. Damir must decide to stay with the crew at the end of the CASPIAN Chapter.

Here is what you must do in order for Damir to stay:

Step 1 - Don't kill any slaves during the entire Chapter.

Step 2 - Save any slaves you come across, you can only save the ones in cages as the ones working will actually call for help if they see you hurt a guard. Stealth is the best approach for this. When you meet up with Anna during the Chapter, she will point out a boat full of slaves. Saving these will count as extra Good will towards Damir staying.

Bad actions will cause your screen to suddenly dim
Good actions will cause your screen to suddenly brighten.

In the CASPIAN chapter, it is necessary to save the slaves and return the photograph of Aigul's mother - in the underground complex.

I’ll describe what I did in the form of a free retelling:
Returned the photo (Flash)
Freed the slaves in the dismantled ship. (Flash)
Saved a slave who ended up shooting himself. (Flash)
Silently killed all the enemies in the water mission and freed two slaves in a cage at the end of the location. (Flash)
He cleared another ship with a sacred fire, but did not kill the last oilman. (Flash)
And in the last task with oil, I didn’t kill anyone in the dungeon, I just ran past, and while going up to the baron, I knocked out ( did not kill ) the oilman who was beating a slave in the room (Flash)
Killed an oil worker who beat a girl (Flash)

At the end, on the tower, Damir says: “Thank you for helping my people, I will not forget” and is given a trophy.

For a long time I didn’t understand why Damir stayed with me, although throughout the chapter he did everything as it should, killing only oil workers, then I realized - at the end, when you make your way to the tank near the tower underground, YOU CAN’T KILL savages, they’re also slaves) I just ran past them on the easiest difficulty .

It means you didn’t go through missions with Damir using stealth, when he spoke quietly, otherwise the slaves would suffer. And this is a mission in a source of water, by the way, it is very easy to shorten the path to the lever and get the Attraction video trophy - https://youtu.be/DQ572IhzDTo and in the final location pass by the shelters. In addition to everything else, I cleared and freed slaves in the locations that Anya noted to you.

I'll describe my actions
- found and gave the diary
-freed the slaves on a ship by the sea
-helped a suicidal slave
- obtained water without noise and killings, freed one slave
- got to the fuel without noise and killings
- on the tower stunned a bandit who was beating a slave

No, it is not necessary to find a photo of the mother. I got the achievement and couldn't find it. But rescuing slaves at marked points and completing missions with Damir without killing or worrying is mandatory.

I returned the photo.
I didn’t find a suicide person
Killed everyone on the ship, freed the slaves
In the mission with water, I went through stealth, only stunned, freed 2 slaves
In the mission with fuel I went all the way to the top, but I just had to knock out the bandit who was pushing the slave into the room.
After the shootout at the time of the video, the trophy fell out

He returned the photo, left Saul alive, carried out the missions in stealth, did not free the slaves, but did not kill them, neither did he kill the savages. In the last mission I saved both a slave and a prostitute. Damir did not go with me. Javdy passed the chapter. The result is the same. For the first time, I did everything that could be done. I'm bombed, I'll put the game aside.

For Damir to go with you, you need to:
- You can kill Saul. Has absolutely no effect on obtaining the trophy
- give the photo to Gul.
-free the slaves on the dilapidated ship.
-go through a stealth mission with a water carrier and be sure to free the hostages (kill the dog with a knife)
-When you come to the baron. Knock out the guy who pushes the slave into the room. And protect the girl from the big guy (knock him out).
-I didn’t kill savages (namely them). The trophy is yours 100%

The main thing is that none of the Kazakhs were harmed (both slaves and those with weapons), and I killed all the oil workers
In the last level you can accidentally confuse and kill a Kazakh with a weapon, be careful
He freed slaves, found a photo, killed all the oil workers, but didn’t see any flashes, they gave him a trophy

As I understand it, there is a certain number of good deeds in the game, and if there are more white flashes than red ones, then this will lead to a positive option. Although there is a priori: to spare Samir at the very beginning, go through Damir’s missions in stealth and without losses, and preferably at the end to save the slave and clean up the ships, rescuing the slaves on Anna’s instructions. I saved the slaves, I tried to cut down their guards, but there were also enough deaths. On the ship with the machine gunner they completely burned him down and had to arrange a bloodbath. But not a single slave was harmed. I was a good boy with Damir. Even when he stole a water tank, he freed the slaves, in addition to stealth, and they were well hidden there in the right corner. In the last mission he saved a slave and let a girl be beaten. Whoever said that they would kill her didn’t bother to watch to the end. She's breathing, you can see it. Then, when they pull her away, after a while she even sits on the floor by herself. So this is not necessary for the trophy, you will only mislead people. When I read, I couldn’t understand what to believe, sometimes one thing contradicted the other. But the main thing was that I got the trophy.

I came across a confusion of hints here. Everyone has their own version and try to guess which one is correct.
This is what I did on a separate playthrough with a good ending.

1. At the very beginning, on the roof of the man with an ax, we knock out and do not cut him.
2. Near the Gul tower, be very careful, there will be a native resident among the bandits. Therefore, I acted carefully and stunned the enemies.
3. The episode with the water. I went through it extremely carefully, saving myself after every bandit I knocked out. He attacked the stealth with shots to the head from a quiet gun. Be careful, there will be 2 dogs. You can’t scare them away, otherwise the alarm will be raised. We also eliminate dogs with a shot in the head. To understand that you have cleared everything, a sure sign is that the slaves will be untied on the carousel.
4. Fuel issue. In the dungeon, you will essentially only have to stun 1 guard. We don’t bother anyone else and carefully make our way quietly to the exit. He didn’t turn off the lights so as not to stumble upon the sleeping people in the dark.
5. Episode with the tower. When the bandit pushes the slave into the hold, we go in and stun him. We walk further and see a bandit pushing out a woman at the door. We attack the bandit with our fists, we also jam the second one behind him and the final batch begins.

Achiva is yours! Damir is with you!!!

I returned the photo!
I didn’t save slaves anywhere at all!
The missions took place in stealth!
In the last mission, I knocked out an oil worker who beat a slave and the one who abandoned a girl, she must be protected! The shooting will begin! But it's okay
I tried to get through without saving the girl, Damir is not going with you
And as soon as he saved her, he drove off without any problems
And take into account that I didn’t save a single slave in side missions

I managed everything to the minimum)
Return photo...forgot about it
Freed the slaves on the ship
I didn’t find a suicide bomber
At the water level he shot everyone, but not a single slave died and did not free anyone
On the tower: in the basement he ran through without killing anyone or making a fuss, and on the tower itself he knocked out an oilman and the MOST important thing, which everyone kept silent about in the tips - in an oilman’s brothel, an oilman beating a slave must be removed before he hits her (you must hit her as soon as only he pushes her into the passage and comes in after her, then this opportunity doesn’t exist until he stops beating, I haven’t tried to shoot her, but most likely it will count).
In the end, they gave me the trophy, but only after hitting the brothel in time.

to get a trophy, it is enough not to offend slaves and savages (slaves, but with weapons of Asian appearance who guard ordinary hard workers + they have a harsh accent). especially in those moments when you and Damir are roaming around towards the end of the game. namely in an oasis. there you will have to steal a truck with water, you can kill the oil workers, as Damir himself says, but do not touch the unarmed slaves. + do not touch the savages when you run through the tunnels through them to the location with the ram. and in the location with the baron, when the ram calls you upstairs, don’t touch anyone until you see how the huge bully will mock the girl. and all the other oil workers, too, right after that.

It is not necessary to free slaves from cages throughout the level for the trophy. The above describes the actions that are exactly needed to get the trophy.

Your tips only confused me more than they helped.

I understood the strategy for getting the trophy. You need to do more good deeds than bad.
If you freed the slaves, completed the mission without losing slaves at the request of Damir, etc., this is considered a good deed and ends with a blue flash of the screen and a characteristic sound.
If, for example, they did not free the slaves and killed them, this is a bad act.

Just save the slaves at various points and don't kill them and Damir will stay with you.
