How to unlock the It's just a scratch achievement in Metro Exodus - Definitive Guide

Just a warning for those who haven't started yet; when you begin the DLC, it automatically starts you off at your last difficulty setting in the base game. For example, if you beat the campaign on Reader, the DLC will also begin on Reader. Unfortunately, the only way to change the difficulty is by booting up the DLC, waiting until the first cutscene is over, pausing, and switching over to Normal from the pause menu.

The problem with that is, you won't get credit for the achievement if you switch difficulties mid-game (thanks to Dr. Scruffleton for confirmation). So do what I just suggested above, and restart the DLC after you've changed it. That way when you begin your new run, it'll already be set to Normal from the get-go.

Here's a very useful tip from Juanfrin:

You don't need to restart dlc or start a new game or something like that. From the main menu, you can change the difficulty and start directly the dlc with complete peace of mind.
EDIT: Also, if you're coming off playing on Ranger Hardcore, you must start a new file in the base game and start from Normal there, then quit out and boot up the DLC. You can then play on the desired difficulty. Otherwise, you'll be stuck playing the DLC on Ranger Hardcore. Thanks to everyone in the comments.

As far as the achievement itself, just abuse your quick save option in-between fights. The sewers in particular are loaded with surprise attacks from the giant worm and his glowing buddies. I haven't finished the story yet, but I just wanted to give a heads up on the difficulty thing. Good luck.

Bad oversight from the devs. Why not let people select a difficulty before even beginning the DLC? They've been working on this for the past 6 months lol.

Thank you for this!

Also, if you're just coming off a Ranger Hardcore playthrough, you can't change your difficulty from the pause menu. But you can simply choose New Game > New Slot > Normal, skip the opening train scene, quit out to the main menu, then you can start the DLC again on that difficulty. laugh

@HarpCity that’s what I did. I was on Ranger Hardcore and couldn’t figure out why I was dying in practically a single hit.

Can anyone confirm if dying voids the achievement as long as no med kits are used? Not that it would be difficult to just not due on Normal, but just-in-case of a fall etc.

Dying and reloading quick saves do not void the achievement. The only thing that voids it is switching difficulties during the mission.

Thanks HarpCity! I'm glad because the intro part was extremely annoying.

I was wondering where the hell you guys were seeing the option to change difficulty. Then I read Trombonafide's comment and realized I was on ranger hardcore and you can't change difficulty on that mode. It might be worth mentioning you have to start a new save file in the main game to be able to choose normal. Pretty annoying to not be able to just choose the difficulty at the beginning of the DLC.

Any tips on how to get past the Nosalis and Librarian at the end?

@juanfrin: thanks for explaining how to set the difficulty before starting the DLC (except on RHC).

@Schwartz: I suggest removing the instructions for starting the DLC, changing the difficulty to normal, and restarting. Makes it more complicated than it should be. Just put down juanfrin's method instead. Also, it might be useful to add a note explaining how Ranger Hardcore prevents changing difficulties, so those affected can start a new game in a second save slot.

Good edits. toast

(Now, I'm wondering what goofy difficulty achievement they might add for Sam's Story.)

I accidentally used a medkit just as a reaction, so I reloaded my quick save, and the cheevo didn't pop when finishing the DLC so it appears using a medkit and reloading voids it too :(

To avoid accidentally using medkits, make sure you dismantle them at workbenches.

As per the above comments, I'm unsure if they have patched this but I accidentally used a medkit and as soon as I pressed up on the D-pad, I reloaded my quick save and the achievement still unlocked at the end of the playthrough. I am unsure whether this is because I didn't actually *use* the medkit, just initiated the animation, and reloaded my save before actually injecting it.

Something to keep in mind. If you use a medkit accidentally, quick load your last save as soon as you can.

Figured I'd add a little extra information.

I changed the difficulty to Reader near the end to make Dodge Master easier. After the battle, I changed it back to Normal, achievement didn't unlock at the end. Then I reloaded an earlier save, same as before.

So one can't tamper with the difficulty to cheese it, thought I'd share that.

I personally had to play through it on Hard-core for the cheevo to unlock. Wasted time with two run-throughs on Normal and didn't get anything

yes, restart the dlc. It does not count if you change it during the opening cutscene. I just played through a 2nd time with switching to normal right when it starts and it did not count for this achievement. Now I have to play a 3rd time.

If you use medikit and reload game, achievment will not pup up. U have to start whole chapter again!

I wish I would have read Granitowy92's comment. I can verify that if you use a medkit it does something to make all your other saves worthless and you'll have to start over.

I did the last fight with the Blind One to get the dodge achievement and used medkits to survive. I went back and loaded an old save with no med kit usage, beat the game, and no achievement. So definitely don't make the message I did.

If you used a first aid kit or didn't get the achievement by bug or missclick, here is what you can do to get it :
1. Make sure you have a save from the end of the game (ofc from the two colonels end)
2. Start again the two colonels on normal (u can change difficulty in the menu)
3. Just play until you get an autosave
4. After autosave, pause game and load the save from the end of the game (ofc from the two colonels end)
5. Just again play, and after cutscene you should get the achievement

Heavenly solution! I actually played through most of the DLC on Reader and didn't see this solution until I was near the end. I went ahead and switched it to Normal and finished the DLC. I started a new DLC playthrough (still on Normal) until I got an auto save, then reloaded my late save from my previous playthrough. Played to the end and the achievement still unlocked during the cutscene! Automatic thumbs up!

Start an entirely new Game slot on Normal difficulty and exit to menu after gaining control of Artyom (first autosave) in Moscow. Then start a Normal difficulty playthrough from Chapter select.

This will ensure that you do not have to rerun the chapter again like I did. (I started from a Reader difficulty save slot) :)

I hope that helps someone.

From there, save often and reload if you take a bunch of damage in a fight. Disassemble your medkits at workbenches where possible to remove the temptation or limit the possibility of accidental usage. I found only the first and last part of the Chapter I had to be careful in.

First thing to note is that you need to change the difficulty of the game BEFORE you start the DLC as you are not given the opportunity to do so when starting it. To do this you can either go to the 'Gameplay' options from the main menu and change it here, or alternatively you can start the DLC, change the difficulty through the pause menu at the first opportunity, then quit out and start the DLC again with the new difficulty selected.

I would recommend doing this on Normal and not any higher, though if you're feeling up to it, then choose whatever you wish above it. You can use the 'Quick Save/Quick Load' feature on Normal which is imperative to get through some areas, especially the first chapter that will see a lot of enemies attack you by surprise and deal quite a lot of damage. Use this feature as often as you want/need to, after every single encounter should you choose. If you feel like you took too much damage, relaod and try again, or else you could end up being only one hit away from death as you get further in. The second and third chapters however are comparatively easy and even the boss fight is easy enough on Normal, though a reload is likely if you wish to also unlock "Dodge master".

Your health will reset to full between chapters so luckily you can afford to take some damage, especially towards the end of chapters.

~Missable - You will have to replay the entire Chapter if you miss this~

Play The Two Colonels Chapter on Normal difficulty without using any Medkits. Use the Auto Save through out and don't rush. I recommend saving before entering a new room and try to get past each section without getting hit.

I recommend starting a new main game, saving it in a separate slot and choosing the normal difficulty level (or higher). Then, as soon as possible, go to the main menu, go to the chapter selection and start playing the expansion.

The DLS is simple, the worm hit, remember, load, it will be dangerous when you get into a room with proboscis monkeys and blebleotekhar.

I don’t know if it was a bug, but: at the very beginning of the DLS I accidentally used a first aid kit and loaded, after completing the DLS they didn’t give me an achievement, so I think downloads don’t help...

There are practically no difficult moments. When you encounter large slugs at the beginning, you need to immediately shoot at them before they have time to attack and fry until victory. With proboscis monkeys and the last battle with the gorilla, the main thing is to choose the right moment to reload, i.e. fried all visible enemies, reload quickly before the next batch comes running. In the battle with the boss, the same scheme - you kill all visible enemies, reload, from the next batch you will kill one or two and you don’t have to waste ammunition, any hit on you triggers a cut scene.

If you didn’t manage to get the trophy during the fair playthrough, then you can get the trophy in a roundabout way. Go through the DLC for your own pleasure and make a manual save after the fight with the gorilla and picking up the story map. Afterwards, go to the main menu and start the dlc again in the same save slot, get to the first automatic save (personally, I got to the point where a leech from the water attacks you after opening the door). Afterwards, without leaving the game, load the manual save indicated above and go to the end of the dlc, after watching all the final scenes this trophy will drop out.
Digital version of the game (version 1.09).

nothing difficult, you can die or load checkpoints. But in fact, for the entire duration, only a giant leech can really deal damage to you.

I accidentally used a first aid kit, didn’t even have time to inject it, reloaded the checkpoint, but I don’t know if it was a glitch, the trophy didn’t drop, I had to replay it. At the same time, I completed “Master of Evasion.” Before the door (boss battle) I made a quick save, finished off this trophy, watched all the final videos and loaded the last save in the main menu and loaded the last save, changed it to reader and completed the gorilla.

The main thing is to select the difficulty level from the game menu - and not after the first cutscene. I completed the DLS and did not receive the trophy because... I chose the difficulty immediately after transferring control of the character.

If you use a first aid kit during the passage and reboot, the trophy will no longer count.
I completed the achievement of killing three proboscis monkeys with a blow, while I was doing it, I used the first aid kit, after that I rebooted, reached the credits, there was no trophy.
Therefore, you need to go through it without pressing Q.
