How to unlock the Survivalist achievement in Metro Last Light - Definitive Guide
Users are commenting that this achievement stacks with the other Ranger achievement.
Tips for Ranger Hardcore:
Go after level specific achievements. Completing chapters without breaking stealth will save you a lot of aggravation as well as ammo. Exploring the open environments will also let you gain lost ammo.
Always load up on ammo in the hub areas. Sell ammo you are not using. I played through with a shotgun and a kalash.
Play through the game at least once before trying this. You can't even see where to press X.
I made a full video walkthrough on Ranger Hardcore. Not all of the videos are live yet, but they will be http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLkofHfJ25Hvvuiwdbw8rrM...

on the chapter bandits you can go and stealthily or not so, retire all the bandits. now all their guns will be lying around and you can take them back to the travellers and sell them. this can be around 400-500 bullets that will help you through your hardcore playthrough. i also sold all my ammo and at least one gun everytime i had the chance knowing that through exploration they would be immediatly re filled at the beginning of the next area. this allows you to use military grade bullets through out the game i had 1140 upon leaving the bandits level.

The following is for those who completed the game on Ranger Hardcore and did not receive the cheevo. Literally just did this and got the achievements. If you have your checkpoint on Hardcore Ranger on D6 still available, follow these steps.
1. Delete Ranger DLC
2. Clear your System's cache
3. Re-download DLC
4. Continue from the last checkpoint on D6
4. Enjoy the Achievements

I can confirm this solution works. I only got Redemption to pop on first try. Did these steps and Continue last save, wait for cutscenes, and both popped at the same time. Thanks a lot!

Hello and welcome to the Metro:LL Hardcore Ranger "Survivalist" Achievement guide.
What the achievement requires of you: A full play-trough of the game on the hardest difficulty with Ranger mode activated.
What is Ranger mode?: It basically boils down to No HUD (you have no knowledge of how many items you pick up, money counter, ammo counter, total oxygen counter, and even quick time events indication of any kind), no cross-airs, only 2 weapons slots and your battery discharges more quickly. However your weapons deals a lot more damage than in easier difficulties, a shotgun blast kills almost all enemies in 1 shot.
With the above said the achievement is actually not that difficult.
Guide and tips:
1. DO NOT ATTEMPT on your first play-trough, the game gets way easier once you know the maps layouts, enemy numbers and behavior.
2. STEALTH is a must. You are not required and should avoid any unnecessary firefights against humans. There are only 3 sections of the game where you are required to shoot human targets:
1. The train chase stage with Khan,
2. The ambush at the Red Square,
3. The final D6 standout.
3. WEAPONS: The shotguns are your best friends, you get a double barreled one for free early on. They are cheap to upgrade and restock on ammo and one shell is all it takes to dispatch almost any enemy at close-medium range.
For long range kills go for Throwing Knife kills as they are accurate, fast, silent and renewable.
Pick up an AK-47 (Kalash as it's named on the game) for medium to long range firefights out in the open fields.
Sell any ammo that are not rifle and shells, sell grenades and claymores and instead upgrade the sight, laser attachment (which doubles as a cross-air), barrel extenders (for the shotgun) and ammo capacity (don't purchase any silencer as they lower the damage output).
I never used Military grade bullets other than to purchase, but its a good option.
4. Forget about the "good ending", if you find yourself between the exit and a guard use the knife either close or long range.
5. BOSSES and mutants: Spiders are killed easily by shining your flashlight, wait for them to show their belly, shoot one shell and they are down, Watchmen are also killed with 1-2 shells, medium Shrimps fall with 1 shell and avoid green Mantis and Demons.
There are 3 mutant bosses in the game and all of them can be killed without expending much ammo:
1. The green super Mantis can be killed by your comrades, just avoid the creature entirely.
2. Big Momma on the catacombs can be killed with 4-5 shotgun blasts after she destroys every pillar in both stages of the fight.
3. The Big Bear requires 2-3 shells to make it fall, then a few placed shots in the back rinse and repeat twice.
6. EXPLORATION: there are many small hidden areas filled with loot and more importantly Oxygen filters so it's up to you if you want to do it.
It took me around 6-8 hours on the Ranger play-trough and died around 4 times. The game is quite forgiving with its checkpoint system.
Hope that this will be of great help, Good luck Ranger of the Metro.

Sure like to know how you are thinking that because this is now my 3rd playthrough for the Ranger Hardcore and the other rangers over at the church never once took it down on my first Normal blind run or my last Easy run through of the game. I've wasted up to 30min of my filters running around in circles there and they do NOT kill him. They only focus on the smaller ones and very rarely target the large one. Just kill it yourself, your filters are more important than your ammo which you can easily restock as you go through the next level considering you can't hardly carry any ammo on this run anyway. You can also buy ammo as a last resort where filters are more precious and you need to build them up for some longer areas outside later anyway.

The mode is very hardcore, unlike the hardcore in Metro 2033. It has 2 times less maximum transportable ammunition, two slots for weapons, and, as described in the description of the mode itself, limited resources.
Stealth is recommended!
The achievement is buggy, tested on the Ranger (which also did not unlock), and the Hardcore Ranger.

I passed it on easy, although I thought it would be difficult
The only advice is, do not waste live ammunition and try to avoid clashes with people
Better yet, just play the entire game in stealth.

ATTENTION!!!! If you were not given this achievement, no problem! We go into the game, go to the store tab and download the Ranger pack again, exit the game, go back in and click continue, watch the video and ale-up, Achiv in your pocket
PS At the time of this action, the saved game must be completed on Ranger Hardcore, if the last save was on a different difficulty, I do not guarantee the accomplishment of the achievement!!!
Many thanks to CarlosSP for the tip and FenixDarc for the help
