I got this in the Mine area wheres there's 3 of them with one patrolling between them.
If you have the acid attacks or grenades use them to reduce its armour down to none, and kill the spawnlings quick as possible to reduce the attacking force.
I then attacked the Whisperer until it got down to 10 health and then threw a seed and it attacked and killed the Whisperer.
Save before you attempt this so you can reload and save your items.
This is also a good area to get the 5 grenade kills, the 5 shotgun kills, the 5 in one action and the 5 with an assault rifle with no reloads. If the spawnlings group up you can kill them easily with a grenade, a shotgun spread and you'll pop the relevant achievement. Save and redo with the achievement you need.

Unfortunately this is glitched for me. The sapling grenade does no damage for me and it doesn’t matter who they attack. It shows they melee enemies but they lose no health.

I thought it was glitched for me too, until I realized you need to deplete Whisperer armor first. Even if they have 5 or 10 health, If they have armor, they just stomp out the saplings.
