You can get this while idling, along with the other achievements for 500 hours and 1000 hours. This one specifically will take just over 4 days worth of flying.
To idle this while you're sleeping, at work, etc., make sure unlimited fuel is on and then head to the world map. Plane choice doesn't really matter here, but I'd choose a prop plane just to extend your flight time. Then, choose any two airports on opposite sides of the Earth. For example, JFK and Tokyo. Some flights with slow planes will give you upwards of 50 hours of flight time between landing!
Once in the game, turn on the co-pilot and let it do its thing. The main issue I've had with this method is that the game likes to crash at random intervals for no apparent reason. So it's a good idea to check on it every so often. If you're nearing the end of your flight and don't want to set it up again, just pause and restart.
500 hours will take close to 21 days, 1000 hours will take about 42 days. There isn't really a way to move time forward on Xbox that affects the progress bar. Trust me, I've tried.

Since I achieved 50 hours, it's not adding up at all anymore. Sometimes my total hours are even REDUCED. Anyone else with the same problem or a fix for this?

Unable to go any further than 50hrs aswell. Bugged achievements.
