How to unlock the Greased achievement in Microsoft Flight Simulator - Definitive Guide

(IT APPEARS THAT A GLITCH OCCURS AND SOMETIMES CHALLENGES DON'T COUNT, USE YOUR ACHIEVEMENT TRACKER AND MAKE SURE IT GOES UP AFTER EACH CHALLENGE)

Landing challenges are located under 'ACTIVITIES' on the welcome screen. There are a total of 24 challenges, 8 famous, 8 epic, and 8 strong wind. There are more flight challenges available if you download the 'World Updates', I'm unsure if you download these that you will have to complete the 'new' challenges also for the achievement, so I advise you to complete the challenges before downloading any of them. Let me know if you did download them and didn't have to complete them in the comments, I'll list out the base game challenges, as the game doesn't tell you.

It doesn't matter what you score on them, you just have to complete them. I advise you to complete flight training before doing anything in the game, it will make your life much easier. (I completed all the challenges with just the flight training, so I highly recommend it before even reading this guide.)

I'm not the best pilot and almost all these challenges only took me a few tries, with all of them only taking a few hours. Some tips I can give you is look at the 'flight plan' that shows up while loading, it shows you the speeds that you should be at and where the landing strip is, as you don't get a mini map in flight, sometimes it's better to scope out where the strip is and then just restart, that way you have a better way of planning out your landing.

Before landing you want to line your plane up as best as possible with the strip, using 'LT' and 'RT', and keep lowing yourself as low as possible, while lowing your power with 'B' and using the up and down arrows on the 'D-Pad' to adjust your flaps, these will slow you down. When coming into land you want to keep lowing your power by pressing 'B', I turn mine all the way down when I'm a few hundred feet away. Once off, I switch to holding 'X' and keeping my plane steady, don't use 'LT/RT' when about to land, as you have no speed and will crash. Let your plane gently go down by itself, once touched down, press left on your 'D-Pad', while still holding 'X', to turn on your parking brake, it's essential on the challenges with small strips.

If my text tips didn't help you, I'll link this video that gives some great tips on landing. Only thing I would change is the view, press the 'VIEW' button on your controller to change to the 3rd person view, unless you feel confident to land the plane from the inside, I honestly don't know why your reading this guide if you can. laugh

Actually MikkDC, your comment is what made me get the achievement in the end after I got stuck on 83%. This game works in a weird way but I found out that it is totally possible for the game to track achievement progress only for the landing to either disappear in the log book or not be recorded (but achievement progress still remains).

Lets say that I play a challenge and it adds 4% to my achievement progress. That progress is saved in the achievement but for some reason not in the game. When you redo it, it's now added to the game but since you already progressed in the achievement, you wont see it move in your achievement tracker. But you may see it move in your in-game achievements via the pilot profile (you may have to do a couple until it moves).

If you're stuck, do as MikkDC said and review every single airport landing challenge 1 by 1 by searching for every airport in the logbook (use the 4-letter ICAO airport code). It's important that the 3rd number in the sequence is marked with the number 1. If it says something like 0000 then you have to redo it. If you can't find a record for an airport that you have landed on then the game has failed to mark it in the logbook and you also have to do it again.

I've found that if you bounce to much on a landing you'll see a takeoff as well as a landing in your Logbook and it won't count towards the progress percentage within the Landing Challenges screens but does seem to count towards Greased (however bad as long as you get the 'success' screen and even a C grade). I haven't worked out if you just need to get B's to get 100% in the landing challenges or a particular score. Mine were bad as I used an XBox controller!
For 'Greased' you can get any valid landing score, and, as of 21st August 2021 you only need to do the landings in the original game.
The progress doesn't always show immediately on the progress bar but gets there eventually. Today on the final group of 'Windy' challenges, progress went up after each landing and the achievement popped as soon as I'd finished the necessary 8.

This achievement seems to be bugged on Xbox. Completed every landing challenge and noticed I was stuck at 70%. Tried to redo a few of them but nothing changed.

Edit: under profile it shows 91% yet every challenge is completed and graded.

Edit 2: I highly recommend you reboot your Xbox and after each challenge you check to see if your progress goes up. I went back and did a few strong wind challenges and it finally popped. For some reason it stopped counting exactly after FUNCHAL.

I had no issues with progress, however the Innsbruck 747 challenge was a massive pain. Definitely the toughest one to beat.

Can confirm I had issues doing this too - my issues were with Lukla, Tegucigalpa and Saba. I also had a low percentage that jumped up by about 16% after I completed one of them. At the end, I was left on 87% and had to go back and complete each of these again to get the achievement to pop.

Does anyone else have an issue with landing the 747 at JFK because the landing gear won’t deploy, I’ve used the handle in the cockpit and pressed right on the D pad and nothing happens.

Yeah I had this issue many times. You have to restart it until it deploys properly

I don't think I ever had any issues with the landing gear. Sometimes I had to hold right on the D-Pad until they came out. Looks like the only solution is to keep restarting the challenge until it works correctly. Get closer to the airport and then try to deploy them.

The 747 landing gear bug prevented me from getting this , but yesterday it looked as if it was resolved. I had to retry it several times but the landing gear worked every time.
I had no problems whatsoever with progress , did not even checked in between but unlocked on the right time.

Can't seem to get the landing gear down on the 747. The knob in the cockpit shows the gear is down however the wheels are still up.

I've done them all, the game shows a C grade for all 25 of them, yet the tracker is on 91% and the ingame stats say 23/25

I went back and redid the ones that I had a low score of less than 100k for, assuming that they'd be the ones it may have not initially counted, some of them were a pitifully low score, but although the ingame stats now say I've done 24 when it said 23 before, the achievement tracker is still stuck at 95%. I have all landings on the list marked with either a B or C grade and a score of over 100k for all of them.

In-game stats have now changed to 26/26 landing challenges completed. But a day and several reloads later the achievement tracker is still at 95% and won't pop.

Update - it finally popped, randomly, as I was halfway through a 300 mile flight!

Xbox One user and stuck at 95%. Completed every landing challenge. Weird and annoying. Restarting my console did nothing. I'm certainly not doing every challenge over again just for one achievement...

MikkDC's method works. I had Paro showing that i'd completed it, but there was no record of it in my Log Book.

There's a full list of challenges with the Airport Codes so you can search them easily over at ; https://flight.fandom.com/wiki/Microsoft_Flight_Simulator_(2...)/Landing_Challenges

Just got this one - the main Landing Challenge page was showing that I had completed all of them, but the achievement was only at 66%. I went back and searched the logbook to see which ones showed a landing and re-did the ones that weren't showing. After that, I was still missing a few. I noticed that most of the ones that hadn't registered were the Strong Winds challenges, so I went back and did the last few of those that were already showing on my logbook. After redoing Sedona it went from 91% to 95%. Ok great, good sign. One more I must have to do, please don't let it be Nanwalek (this one was the hardest for me). Of course, it was Nanwalek that I needed to complete again to get to that 100%. Definitely a great feeling though when that achievement popped on the sad excuse for a runway at Nanwalek!

TL;DR : Go back and search the logbook for the airport codes and make sure the flight shows with the landing registered.

I'm also stuck at 95%, even though I've completed all the landings with a score of A,B, or C.

I guess I'll follow the advice above from DeepHouse910 to review my flight log and verify that a landing is recorded for all of them.

Edit: Looking at the log worked: the Aspen landing challenge showed a "B" grade (completed) on my Landing Challenge page; but when I looked in the log: there were no landings recorded for that airport. Not sure how that inconsistency happened. Then I flew that landing again (got a "C" grade) and the Greased achievement popped up.

I was missing a few landing challenges (New York and Inssbruck). Turns out it was because I had uninstalled the 747. Reinstalled and had to restart the game for those to show up.

@JJ DANG3R
The 747 landing gear will not deploy if you’re over speed.
Try landing around 160 knots.

Anyone who has completed the challenges on PC and it didn't unlock, if you happen to also have an Xbox Series S|X, I installed it on my Series X, and as soon as I launched the game all the "stuck" achievements unlocked for me (Greased and Uphill Climb).

I am stuck at 87%. One thing to check is to go into your logbook, type in the airport identifier codes one by one, and look for the short flights as these will likely be the landing challenges. What you want to be looking for is ones which have a 1 in the TAKEOFFS section - I believe this is what is making the landings not count. I have 2 airports which say 1 0 1 0 for takeoffs/landings and one which says 0 0 0 0 (even though I completed the landing challenge). All the others just have 1 in the landing section. So maybe bouncing too high on initial contact with the runway is negating the landing and counting as a take off? Going to retry these and check if the stats updates. EDIT: managed to get my SEQM landing to 0 0 1 0 but still stuck at 87%, so guess that doesn't make a difference :(
