Select your plane. I used the Extra 330LT because it flies low and slowish. Rain isn't constantly falling so you want one that won't fly through it too quick when it does rain, and if you get to high you will see less rain.

Select a departure and an arrival airport that are far apart. I used EIDL Donegal in Ireland to KJFK Kennedy Int'l in New York USA. It's almost completely over water so their are no unexpected obstructions to fly into. Now under the airplane thumbnail you can change from VFR, to IFR (Low-altitude airways). (VFR stands for Visual Flight Rules, IFR stands for Instrument Flight Rules. The more you know...)

Set Flight conditions to Rain, and time to night. You will have to periodically adjust the time so it stays night during the flight.

You may want to save the setup at this point so you can easily get back to it.

Now you can go to the runway and get ready to fly.

Go to Assistance and Airplane Systems then turn Unlimited Fuel on.

As soon as you are on the runway, pull up the weather window and select the lowest cloud level. Raise the slider for "Altitude (Top)" up to 20,000 or so, this will keep you from flying above the rain level. Now slide the Coverage slider to 100 so there are no clear areas for you fly through. It won't rain all the time, but it will rain a lot. There is an upper limit for getting rain, but I rarely went above it using this method.

NOTE: If you are flying out of far northern airports (like Canada), you may need to manually raise the temperature in the Weather panel or your plane will ice up and crash. On the Weather Settings look for the 'Temparature MSL' slider and increase it to around 25 or higher.

Close the Weather window and pull up the AI Control window. Turn all 3 of these on and go do something while the AI does the work.

User KawiNinjaRider7 commented that progress is only saved when you land for this achievement. I had an issue where I lost hours of progress for all time based achievements when the game crashed after 8 hours of flying. So to be safe, land or exit to main menu periodically to keep from losing progress.

Just a note on this one, the achievement tracker (for me at least) didn't move up at all until I had landed and was back on the ground after each flight (even after satisfying the requirements of at least 1 take off and landing). Same for when it finally unlocked as well, my last 1% I flew for half an hour then was able to simply travel to "taxi" and the achievement popped immediately. This was specific to the IFR achievement though, all other time related ones have been tracking/unlocking mid flight.
Thanks, I'll update the solution. However, I just lost hours of time on all of the trackers when the game crashed mid-flight. I'm going to add a caution to land or drop to main menu periodically to all the solutions just to be safe.

+1 for telling what IFR even means. That's really all you need to know for this achievement so I don't know why people are being dicks about you not having it yet.
Eh, doesn't matter really. I understand the down votes because I don't have it yet. My main reason for posting was to let people know how to get it in IFR mode, and how to make rain more plentiful. Other than that the solutions are fairly common sense. That said, I've seen a lot of people try to do achievements like this one at a time without thinking "If I fly at night in the rain under IFR rules, I can do them all at once" so why not put them all together.

On series x it looks like it counts the time if the game is in resume mode. I paused halfway through a flight and popped 3 of these the next day
HI there! You mean Quick Resume? What you did? Just simply switched games in the middle of the flight and resumed the game in the next day?

How can you guarantee this works when you haven't won a single one of the achievements you are giving a guide for?

Because the game has a progress indicator, and all of mine are going up. Check back in a couple of days.

It's a general rule that people downvote solutions if the writer doesn't have the achievement themselves. People might not even have this game and they get their little gang together and hunt the solution writers down who don't have the achievements they've written a solution for. Don't worry about it. Always been like that in TA and always will be. I don't understand why they don't show the negative voters' names publicly and require a written reason for why they downvoted.

+1 from me

Stand corrected by earlier comment. Just for info it wasn't me that downvoted.

I don't really understand how the game tracks this. If I fly IFR routes in IFR altitude stratums (ie FL180-600 in the US) it doesn't count. Does it just count if I fly IMC? IFR and IMC are different things. I do IFR flights all the time but it's been at 71% for quite a while now.

TL;DR: Weather conditions do not matter. This counts the same whether you are flying in clear skies or in the clouds. You must be on an active IFR flight plan with ATC and actively talking to ATC for this to be counting (If you pull up the ATC window and see 'Cancel IFR' as the last option to talk to ATC, you are actively on an IFR flight plan). Starting an IFR flight plan and canceling IFR will only count the portion up to that point. If you took off with an IFR clearance, you shouldn't lose the portion up to that point if you cancel or even close out of MSFS. If you pick up an IFR clearance once already in the air, only the time from that point to landing will count, but it will not count until you land, so if you close out of this one early, you will lose progress. As the Achievement description says, you must have at least one takeoff and one landing, so I recommend making sure your first flight doing this has both a takeoff and a landing. I don't know how it counts if you had a partial first flight (or all previous flights) as I cannot test this. As of writing this, I am at 88% on completion and should unlock this today. I will update if I find something changes.

I did some testing on this while doing my 300+ mile flights in each aircraft and used the Game Bar tracker to see when this was and was not counting, and I think I have a pretty good idea of how this is counted. As the solution suggests above, you must choose IFR (low- or high-altitude) before you start the flight. If you want to go direct, you can click on each waypoint to the right of where you selected IFR and click 'Remove' on the map below. This does not affect the Achievement. You should also click on Nav Log in the top-right below the Weather icon and change the altitude to something reasonable for your aircraft. For the city pair I used (KDAL-KCRP), it selected 22,000' regardless of the type aircraft, and the prop planes are not going to make it up there. The AI Copilot will likely stall the aircraft trying to get up there. Unlike previous versions of MSFS and other sims, I do not know of a way to plan an IFR flight mid-flight, so you will have to exit to the main menu and start a new flight this way if you are just flying around VFR and change your mind.

Once you are in the flight, you must pick up an IFR clearance from ATC before departing in order for it to start counting from takeoff. If you loaded directly on a runway, this already done for you, and you are essentially cleared for takeoff as soon as you are loaded in. To confirm this, you can pull up the ATC window and read the past messages. If you loaded in a parking spot, you or your AI Copilot will need to request it. This is important, and it will not count unless you picked up an IFR clearance from ATC and are actively talking to them. If you miss an ATC frequency change or do not respond to their messages and they cancel your IFR clearance, the Achievement will stop counting. If this happens, you can pick up the IFR clearance again, but the tracker will stop counting until you land, and you lose whatever time you were off the IFR clearance. If you are not paying attention to the sim or need to walk away for even a minute, I recommend letting the AI Copilot handle the radio so you don't miss a frequency change. To do this, click on the AI Control icon from the in-game menu (looks like a Pilot with a hat on), and toggle on manage radio comms. I also recommend toggling on Control Aircraft from this same menu because ATC will cancel your IFR flight plan if you don't comply with one of their instructions after a few attempts.

I did test and log some time on this by starting a flight from the West Coast US to Hawaii in a C172 (be sure to turn on unlimited fuel in the Assists menu), turning on the AI, and going to bed for the night. The time had counted overnight. I closed out of the flight mid-flight and started a new one, and the Game Bar tracker picked up where I left off.

Sorry this is so long. I know a lot of people are new to this game and genre may not be able to understand some of the technical aspects. I've been playing flight sim for 23 year and am a real-world Pilot, so let me know if something needs explained in more detail. Feel free to add this to the guide or point to it. I didn't want to create my own and undo all of the work you did on combining Achievements.

These achievements are on the verge of understanding. I have been playing for a week, in the first days they increased: IFR, rain and night but for two days they have not done so anymore and I have not changed anything. Today they started to increase rain and night but not IFR, could anyone tell me why?

progress work in active pause for me, but it's hard to start counting. Already got an IFR landing and departure, but new flights doesn't registered towards the progress.

Just wanted to mention that I never did an IFR landing and still got the achievement. People whom are saying you need to land for it to track progress, I think that is a thing from the past that has been fixed.

On PC you can get in an IFR plane, set AI flying, and go into windows to change the time ahead 4 days. It popped right then for me. I did not have to take off or land in an IFR plane.
