How to unlock the Wheels Up, Wheels Down achievement in Microsoft Flight Simulator - Definitive Guide

Just a couple of notes about this achievement to help others.

You don't need to follow a Flight Plan. Meaning you don't have to land at the airport you choose while plotting a route on the globe menu.

You can use AutoPilot for flying. I landed manually.

You can also REFUEL mid air by going to the fuel tab at the top of the screen.

You can have auto-pilot for the whole journey, I didn't even take off or land myself, just left it running and it popped.

How do you have it auto take-off and land? I did CNTRL-ALT-X after take off and it flew for me. But it overshot my destination and never landed.

My plane also overshot the destination without landing. Is there a separate setting you need to use somewhere to get AI control to do the landing too?

The slower planes will land themselves if the runway is long enough. I've had several land automatically, while others overshoot and continue flying. AI often runs long before setting down so you need a longer runway than you think if you want the AI to land for you.

My plane crashed after flying the 300+ nonstop miles and it gave me the achievement. So no need for it to be a successful landing.

Wow AI is buggy. First forget to land. On the second try crashed badly..

The AI is horrible when it comes to landing, it simply refuses to do so in a Flight Plan half the times. It's best to let it pilot all the way and then land it yourself, if you don't feel like piloting.

I flew from CDG to the Eiffel Tower, then tried to fly under it. I did a touch and go underneath with my gear down and it popped.

Point is that this is strangely buggy.

I believe the auto-pilot cannot control the power/throttle so if this is too high and you are not controlling this as you are coming in to land then it will overshoot and crash.

I could've cried when my plane randomly stalled and crashed just short of the runway after a 330 NM flight that took well over 3 hours (Paris to Manchester in a Cessna, which ironically I picked because they're easy to land!) but fortunately the achievement popped straightaway, so it seems that you don't need to land successfully, or even be on the runway, just near it.

Maybe people mix up Co-Pilot and Auto-Pilot?
