How to unlock the World Traveler achievement in Microsoft Flight Simulator - Definitive Guide

Yes, 500 DIFFERENT airports. It's a lot.

- You can load up the World Map, select a destination, and choose to make is as your arrival destination with no departure. You will start on approach to that airport. This makes it easier to tick them off if you're so inclined.

- You must actually land at the airport. Crashing won't help for this one, I'm afraid.

- You can check the log in your profile to see which ones you've successfully landed at.

I'm slowly working my way through this, so I'm not quite there yet. Best of luck! toast

Edit: BladedShepherd posted in the comments that there is now a MUCH easier way thanks to the GOTY update. BladedShepherd said:

Wcbezoeker later elaborated on this.

I am playing on PC (faster loading compared to Xbox) and I can do approximately 45-50 airports per hour. To improving loading times, I have decreased my graphical settings to the Low preset and dropped the resolution.

The aircraft is the Volocity, it looks like a drone. Hold A to get it 10 meters in the air, wait 5 seconds, hold B to bring the plane down. Then the load/save icon should pop up in the lower right of your screen.

Note that it does not always works. Sometimes the logbook shows the arrival as a vicinity and sometimes the load icon does not pop up. If that happens, hold A again to get the plane in the air and drop down after 5 seconds. Usually the icon will show up then.
I have not tried these yet, but it seems like good advice. Thanks!! toast

I have the achievement unlocked now and I did the last 2% on Xbox. Like you mentioned Sasha, it works on both PC and Xbox. Like with all achievements in this game, it might take a while for the tracker to catch up and that the achievement pops.

Just pick the airport as your departure. I never selected a specific runway but that is probably unnecessary. Also, you can have one or two saving icons as you land.

In my first 250 landings there was only one save icon, the one that pops up two seconds after you landed. After that it was usually the case that there were 2 save icons. The first pops up while about 3 meters above the runway while you are landing. The second after you have landed. I always chose to go back to the main menu AFTER the second icon popped up. Don't know if that is necessary either.

Another thing to note is that the engine of the VTOL will stop working after 30 to 75 minutes or so. The blades do not want to spin and turning the engine off and on does not help. The only solution I could find is to restart the game.

From start to finish this achievement will take 10 hours. Doing the landing challenges and bush trips first will shave off an hour or two.

at least with over 37,000 airports, there's no shortage of options. If you're really lazy, You can also have the A.I do the entire landing, and it will still count!

As of now the AI Flight Assistant is quite unreliable, but I found it functional, for the most part, flying the Daher Turboprop.
Tip: Do a reverse thrust + parking brake to stop on a dime.

Mine has actually gone up right at 5 each. Usually increases on the runway after the fifth landing.

Do you have to request landing or just successfully touch down and come to a stop?

By ReaperShadow666 on 10 Aug 2021 22:08
Simply landing and coming to a stop is enough - no need to request landing.

You'll see the little "now saving" circle in the lower right corner of the screen appear once you are about to come to a stop and that will be the signal that the landing was successful and progress is saved/updated.

Can confirm, you need to completely stop the plane and see the saving icon for it to count. What I've been doing is assign a parking space for arrival so that the landing counts, but also makes progress for the taxing achievement!

I found early on that AI Pilot landings didn't count for me or at least it felt like they didn't as i must have done around 30 landings with a mix of manual and AI Pilot landings but when i checked Pilot Profile i had something like 12 airports landed at so been doing them manually since (AI Pilot does most of approach but i do the final part of landing on runway)

Always stop the plane and then quit out to main menu and had no issues with tracking, always going up 1% every 5 landings. Up to 300 as of now so beyond the half way mark

Question: What counts as an airport? I've landed at airfields and airstrips and military bases and not seen any progress. Ireland has a lot of airfields actually labelled as 'airports' and they did give progress.
Struggled with progress in South West UK tonight. Lots didn't seem to count. I later checked progress in my profile/achievements on XBox and it said 18% but the XBox tracker didn't update and neither did the progress in the XBox App which still say 16%..
Gets VERY annoying when you've got so many to do and good full stop landings in a 172 don't count.

Pretty sure every labeled location is an airport. When you go to the menu, look at your profile, then your logbook. It will show your trips. If you landed at a place, it will list it. Otherwise, it'll say [Vicinity].

I've found that sometimes when I land, for whatever reason it doesn't always register as properly landing based on where I stop my plane. Not sure what to say about that, but that's how I check.

My progress updated overnight, but I have the progress tracker not updating again today. I've been checking after every landing to see if I can work out what might be happening. It looks as if you MUST touch down after the marked runway threshold line otherwise it does count as 'Vicinity' 😢. That, plus come to a full stop on the runway.
It's going to be a long slog.

Can you alter the Sim Rate to get down near the airport faster?
Edit: Yes, you can.

SincereSeeker6: Thanks for that, it helps enormously. It would be even better if the assisted flight controls didn't fly into the ground, so only recommend X4 and drop to normal for landing 🙂
I've bound 'Increase Sim Rate' and 'Decrease Sim Rate' to buttons on my Trackball.
XBox Achievement tracker doesn't always keep up regardless of sim rate increase or not. If you check your Profile/Achievements you can see your actual progress and eventually the Tracker will catch up, possibly at your next session as just happened with me.

Yeah, it's extremely helpful. I use the Cessna 172 and hit the increase button twice. Then just before landing I decrease it twice and hit the engine idle key. I can go from the starting position in the air to stopped on the runway in about 30-45 seconds. I land at 130-140 KTS sometimes and I'm still alright.

Does anyone know if I start a flight and add a way point at various airports and land there turn around and take off onto another airport will this count all the airports I’ve landed at instead of loading the game up constantly ?

...wow. This is awesome. I'm having some problems with it. Sometimes it registers as a landing, sometimes not. Sometimes the tower clears me to land and then still says I'm not cleared. I can't figure out exactly what to do to get credit in my logbook every time.

That's odd. I've done about 60 landings this way and only two didn't count in the log book. I'm not getting clearance or anything, as soon as the game loads I ascend and hover for a few seconds and then land and it seems to register the landing for me.

It just isn't working for me, at least on console. I've set it as departure, departure/arrival, I've held it in the air for 30 seconds, I've moved down the runway. I get the takeoff, never (well, almost never) the landing.

I have no clue.

Okay, so I tried it a bit more, and I learned something.

The log book lies.

I started going to different airports and doing the up/down with the VTOL, and the tracker is going up.

Fantastic tip! Also, ignore the log book as far as landings go. toast

The VTOL doesn't seem to work anymore. I'm picking airports at random and according to the tracker, none of them are counting.

EDIT: Figured out the problem. Tracker only goes up 1% at a time. It take 5 airports to go up 1%. So every 5th airport is when the tracker will move.

Take off, hover, land, turn the craft off, wait for saving icon, go to log and see it recorded, then go to next airport. This is going to take forever, lol, but it does work.

I did it straight up, yiu should use a spreadsheet to track your airports, and check every five as sometimes it just doesn’t count it. I probably did closer to 550

When I go to Marketplace ingame and then Airports, it shows a V marker icon with the airports on the map you get. Feels pretty much like it V's the airports you landed on and maybe also those you took off from. Weird they have this not for the regular world map.

What...? Those are the airports you downloaded.

The VTOL trick seems its not working, it doesnt even count as a take off, and I tried elevating a lot.

Definitely got mix results from the VTOL so far.

It started off well, with 3 leading to 9%. Then 7 later (3 of which I didn't see the save icon) got 10%. Next 5 went smoothly and got to 11%. After 5 more save icon landings I saw the tracker go up, but when I went to check it still said 11%. another 3 more and still 11%.
Also a little concerned only 2 appeared in the log book

I completed this achievement this morning. I tried used the VTOL, but it never registered the landing, so I did the last few flights by setting the desired airport as my arrival airport and then landing.

Anyone else having a harder time getting VTOL to register (besides guy above)? Its counted about maybe one or two out of 10+. Before it was the reverse, with only a handle not counting.

PS I also hate the volatility of the in-game tracker. Usually lose a few percent when reloading the game, more if the game crashed. Still, at least we have the in game tracker as a source of truth

I reopened the game and I think the tracker went up, def this update seems more wonky but I'm thinking it still tracks. Also for the VTOL I seemingly had to land ON THE RUNWAY, not just go up and down as sometimes you spawn off the end of the runway

I switched from doing this achievement on my XSX to my PC. It doesn't even have a dedicated GPU and I play most things with GPX turned way down, but even on that the loading is far superior to my XSX. Additionally it's more reliable in terms of registering as well as fewer crashes and less progress loss

I'm in the process of flying around the world and landed at 8 different airports and so far only 1 had registered.

Mine is definitely working right now. I've been using the VTOL, up/down. Went from 22% to 28% today with 147 unique airports. If it means anything, I'm currently using the Insider build, so that may make a difference.

This is very inconsistent in its tracking. The achievement tracker should go up once every 5 landings. My past handful of increases have come after 11, 8, 13, 5, 6, 8, and 8 landings. It's been a mix of AI/Manual control, varying type of airports, parking, etc. No clue what makes it count or not.

I figured out the inconsistency I was having. To ensure the landings count, land at the airport then come to a complete stop on the runway where you landed. After that, if you want to taxi to parking (to work on the 100 miles of taxiing), or do anything else go ahead. Coming to a complete stop on the runway you land on is the only way I can get them to count 100% of the time.

Done 20 landings in a row that haven't counted in my stats - they're in the logbook as landings, but in the profile/stats page the number of unique airports landed at hasn't moved from 156 and the progress tracker hasn't changed. And yes I did fully stop the plane, and no I haven't landed at those airports before!

You have to land on the runway, not before it and taxi onto it. You also must stop on the runway. Do not taxi to a parking space before stopping. DO NOT use AI for this achievement. It will not count.

**Update: I have landed on the runway and then flipped the plane several times and it's still counted. It still counts as a stop if you wheels down on the runway and then stop moving. If you go off of the runway it will not count. Keep up with your tracker so you know that it counted.

First, do all the landing challenges and bush trips needed for achievements. Some of the bush trips are annoying and you may have to land outside of the runway and it will not count. Since these take so long, don't bother trying to land on all of them for the achievement. Just take what you can get. If you want to do the activities that come with the world updates, those will help with this achievement but are not needed for anything else. They are slower than the method below, but having some objectives to go to might make this a little less boring.

The world updates will add more airports to the game. I waited on downloading them until I was done with the all activities and Jack of all Planes achievements. I'm not sure if this matters or not, but I had seen where there were a few issues in the early days of the PC versions and did not want to risk any issues with those achievements. Another reason to do all the activities and 300 mile trips with each plane first.

The Grind:
You can just click on the airport and choose it as the arrival destination and it'll put you on the approach for what ever plane you have selected. I used the Flight Design CTSL. Most planes take the same time to approach, but many of the faster ones will crash before getting to the runway. The CTSL stops very quickly and is easy to land.

I turned on all assists in the options and turned off all notifications. This will mostly guide your plane to the runway. In most cases, I had to pull up a little bit at the end to make sure I landed on the runway itself. When you touch down, just hold X to stop and watch for the little save circle at the bottom right of the screen. Wait for it to stop spinning and return to the main menu for the next one. It'll take 2-4 minutes with loading for each airport. Expect to spend 25-30 hours just doing this method. It'll take much longer for normal flights.

Pick an area of the world you want to focus on. Pick something a little easier to keep up with such as New Zealand or the UK. Have a piece of paper or notepad on your pc and keep up with what you have landed on in that area. You can start another list when you move to a new area, so that it's easier to keep up with.
You will need to zoom in a bit to see a lot of the smaller airports.

Check your achievement tracker every 5 airports. It should move up 1%.

**Note**Out of the 50 or so I've done in the UK with this method, 2 have not counted. If you landed on it and stopped and don't think you did anything wrong, just move on. You could have another 2-5 done by time you figure out something is wrong. Just mark it on your list and move on.

The most fastest way to get this achievement is to enable slew mode with everything set to hard for assists.

You can enable the airport poi's to see the airports easier on Xbox consoles.. but on pc you can use a program called LittleNavMap to navigate even faster between airports.. Just put yourself on each runway with slew mode and go to the next one without even having to fly manually to all 500😁

Every time you put your aircraft with slew mode on the runway you see in the bottom right corner of the screen a loading circle appear.

When that icon is gone it is counted to your 500 landings airport achievement and you can go on to the next airport asap with slew mode!

You can than get the achievement in a day if you're really dedicated XD or in a day or 2 to 3🙂

also if doing on pc and with LittleNavMap its good to look at major cities as most of the times they have tons of smaller airports right next to each other.
