How to unlock the Golden Pharaoh achievement in Microsoft Solitaire Collection - Definitive Guide

Note that boards in the Star Club and Daily Challenge modes (when you get the "Clear X boards" requirement) don't count towards this achievement unfortunately.

This achievement is a pain, because not only do the Star Club and Daily Challenge boards not count, which would make this way faster, but when playing Pyramid you aren't guaranteed a solvable set-up. This can make it very frustrating to work through a board to only find out that there was no way to solve it. I highly recommend reviewing each board as soon as you open it and see it there is anything obvious indicating it's not solvable. For example, if you see all four 8s are buried near the peak of the pyramid and there is a 5 under them, and there's no way to get to that 5 without removing all of the 8s, then it's unsolvable. Just flip through the deck three times and start a new deal.

As far as completing decks, if you have the Premium upgrade (which I highly recommend for the Daily Challenge badges), then you'll be asked at the start of each game if you'd like a wild card or an extra deal. If you don't have Premium, you'll be asked this every few games. Always choose the wild card. There is no point to an extra deal, since you can just start a new game and that's the same as a new deal. Save the wild card for situations where you only have one or two cards left in the pyramid, then use the wild card only if it will guarantee you a completed board. If you use it and you still can't complete the board for some reason, undo to back before you used the wild and save it.

As far as general strategies, this game takes a little getting used to for what works best and how to manipulate the cards. Here are some general tips:

  • Making matches with pairs on the pyramid should always take priority over using a card from the stock/waste pile.
  • Try to plan out matches on the pyramid. For example, if you have a 10 on the pyramid and two 3s to potentially match it with, look what's under each 3. If there is another 10 under one of them, match with that 3, and then make another match with the 10 underneath and the second 3.
  • This one seems minor but can be very important. As you're cycling through the stock cards, you'll often come across a card in the stock pile that is matchable with the card in the waste pile. When this happens, review the pyramid. If you don't see any places where you'll need these cards, match them immediately to get rid of them. For example, if you flip past a 3 and a 10 comes up, review the pyramid. If there aren't any 10s or 3s left in the pyramid, match these two cards in the stock and waste piles. It may seem pointless at first glance because it isn't helping remove cards from the pyramid, but eliminating unneeded cards from the stock pile brings other cards in the stock pile closer together, meaning that if you're matching stock cards with pyramid cards, if your matchable cards stay visible, it could save you another pass through the stock pole, and since you only get three passes, that could mean clearing the board. It's hard to explain this in words so I'll give an example: you have two cards left in the pyramid - an 8 on top of a 2, so you need to use a 5 and then a Jack to clear the board, and you're on your last pass through the stock. While going through the stock, you pass the Jack first, but you can't use it until you use a 5. Then you pass a 10, then a 3, and finally a 5. At this point it'd seem like it's too late, since you can't cycle back again to get that Jack. But if you match the 10 and 3 when they're on the stock and waste piles, now the Jack is on the waste pile and the 5 is on the stock pile, so you can match the 5 and 8, and then immediately match the Jack and 2 to complete the board. This situation may sound rare or trivial when you read this, but over the course of 100 boards and the challenges, this has saved me many times.
