How to unlock the Ghûls Gone Wild achievement in Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor - Game of the Year Edition - Definitive Guide

This achievement is only available in the DLC Lord of the Hunt (which is included in this edition of the game).

Play through the game...

to unlock a Torvin question called "Hypocritical Oath".

Playing through this mission you will learn how to shadow blast Ghûls in order to command them (cn_X + cn_Y when you have a hitstreak).

Note: This is an ideal place to earn the achievement: O Mother, Where Art Thou?
Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor - Game of the Year EditionO Mother, Where Art Thou? The O Mother, Where Art Thou? achievement in Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor - Game of the Year Edition worth 78 pointsHave 20 Branded Ghûls at one time.

Towards the end of the mission you will have to down a Graug that appears. You should at this point already have many Ghûls under your command.

Fire two CHARGED head shots (Push cn_LT and HOLD cn_RT) at the Graug to bring him to his knees. The Ghûls will then jump onto the Graug automatically. Wait for as many as possible to get on and then hold cn_down to dispatch them - they will explode and take the Graug with them; netting the achievement.

Note: You MUST dispatch the Ghûls (cn_down) to win the achievement; allowing them to kill the Graug in combat is not enough.

A pain in the ass. Even on this mission. In freeroam it is nearly impossible.

This achievement is incredibly frustrating. The Graug will take more damage from the explosions while he is still stunned so if you wait to long the ghul explosion will do less. Also sometimes after you explode all your ghuls you can get more (that are in your control) to spawn.

Any location that's good to find both a graug and ghuls? I missed it during the mission.

If you miss it during the main mission there is a location near the south west portion of the map... a cave with a graug. The mounds for ghuls are nearby the cave.

Took me 4 or 5 tries but I finally got it. I had to let the ghuls wear him down a little bit before I downed him, then dispatched them when he was under half health while he was still down.

God what a pain in the ass! Can't seem to even get the Grau and ghouls in the same location. No Ghul mounds show up in the southwest.

@ Falcon...try this....

1) Fast travel to the Forge Tower in Cab-Gwanath (NE corner of the map)

2) Look to your right, you should see a Graug, if not, fast travel again and one should spawn, or you can use the Graug bait under the bridge left/west of the tower

3) There are THREE Ghul mounds here in this area, West, East and South of the Forge Tower!!! Get your Ghuls branded and either use the Gruag bait or attack one that is out already....

Hope this helps!!

@Warboy, thank you SO much - this worked way better than the video in the walkthrough for free roam.

This is a good guide, I got mine to pop on this mission. I was having a hard time maintaining enough dominated ghuls or I the ghuls would kill the graug before I could dispatch them. I found that if the graug dies and the achievement didn't pop when it tells you to return to Torvin, instead of restarting the whole mission you can just run the opposite direction as Torvin. It will tell you that you are leaving the mission area. Keep going, when it says you failed, just hit retry. This will spawn you with a fresh graug and 20+ dominated ghuls to try again. It took me 3 tries, giving me more dominated ghuls each time I respawned, but it was shorter than redoing the whole mission.

I did this over 10 times, and no achievement. On my 11th retry, the achievement finally unlocked. kind of screwed acheivement.

Want to add, if you fail to kill him with the ghuls, just run away. You will leave the mission area, and restart right after the Graug appears. Saved me some time after restarting the mission a couple of times.

I had problems getting it to pop, what I did was followed the guide. Let the Ghuls take the graug down 50% then dispatch, once dead hit guide then view all achievements, then select middle earth SoM now wait for it to pop.

seemingly impossible to get in free roam. if you miss this, you'll likely need to restart and replay the Lord of the Hunt- which will cost you a few hours. so, don't miss this one. thus, if you don't get the achievement at this exact point, run out of bounds and try try try again.

^ This method worked for me second try, no need to restart the DLC: https://youtu.be/_mj3MpwYXeM

I'll also add that the achievement did not pop right away. Frustrated, I fast traveled to the nearby forge tower and went to take a pee and heard it pop while I was in the bathroom.

ive done the story mode mission way, i did it in open world play.. ive done it multi times in multi ways an it will not pop.. Such a buzz kill, just another game thats a waste of time if you want the 100%.. No point doing anymore if this stupid little 10gs cheevo wont even work.

The achievement is pretty glitchy / finicky and in every meaningful way ***MISSABLE***.

I missed this in the story mission. Eventually I managed to kill a Graug twice in freeroam with the Ghuls but no achievement. From hours of trying. Trying to redo that in freeroam is just not reasonable. The game is extremely specific about at which nanosecond you press down on the D pad when it comes to killing / not killing / an enemy killstealing the Graug.

This requires a HARD warning for any future players that the achievement is 99,99% missable. You may need to kill the Graug with the Ghuls 10+ times for the cheevo to pop and the only way to manage that is to focus on retrying it over and over during the Torvin story mission. And only then.

After 40-50 tries I managed to kill 2 Graugs via Ghuls in freeroam, every other attempt died in the crib because the game spawned maybe 4-8 Ghuls per nest, all of which die instantly before one can even try to dominate them. Followed by 20 orcs and 3 Caraghars to make things more chaotic and impossible. And those aforementioned two successes gave no achievement.

I had to eventually redo the DLC, reached the story mission in a couple of hours and when I killed the Graug for the tenth-ish time the achievement unlocked.

Hard missable, plain and simple. There's a good case to be made to just flag this as such. A proper clear warning would be useful at the top of the guide. This one is possible to get in freeroam in the same way that winning the lottery possible.

I.E. it isn't possible.

Fast travel to the Forge Tower in Cab-Gwanath (NE corner of the map). There is a Graug bait in the square structure opposite, destroy it. Damage the Graug until low health.

You need to have one or better two Ghoul Matrons in - otherwise the damage will not be enouth.
