How to unlock the Ghûls Gone Wild achievement in Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor - Definitive Guide

Hello,

as other guides might explain, this seems to be easier to get in certain story mission.
but if you had done it back then, you wouldn't be looking at chievo solutions, now would you? hehe.

So, this is my videoguide, it's ment to be done easily even if you missed it in story missions. This guide is ment to be done after you completed enough story missions to get the Ghul branding skill.

Hope it helps and hope you guys like it.

0) Has to be done in the "Lord of the Hunt" DLC in the storymode freeroam. Has to be done at any point after getting the Ghul brand skill (obtained through story missions progression)
1) go to the locations I show on the video and follow the video instructions
2) kill the Graug by dispaching your Ghuls to remove his last chunk of HP by pressing cn_down in the correct moment

I explain all I can on the video audio.

guide starts around 00:45

Before voting negatively, please let me know why. If you think there is room for improvement please let me know instead of just giving me a -1 and leaving me in the dark. Much appretiated.

Nice solution. One suggestion to make elf shot a bit less of an issue is to use dagger throws to build up your combo - instead of shooting the graug, you can throw daggers at it.

I have tried this method about a dozen times to no avail. Clearly it's possible as there's video proof, but many random factors must come together in order for this to work. I would recommend most people just replay the dlc for that one mission, it seems much easier. Glad you could pull this off though, maybe I just suck.

thx for your comment. if the other people who voted (both + or -) could comment on how it went for them, might help. but TBH i got it the first try after i got it right (had lots of failed tries because i didn't realize you had to actually kill the Graug by dispatching cn_down the Ghuuls)

Tried for hours can't get it to work, way too much random crap has to go your way. Far quicker to restart the dlc over and do it on the mission, props to you for getting it to work but it sure is not easy, or stress free

I won't lie, your solution is not THAT easy but it is CONVENIENT. You have the Graug and Ghuls at the same area.. All you have to do is clean up the area off enemies, get rid of the Caragors and then brand the the Ghuls. A good tip is that after you shoot the Ghul bait or whatever this thing is, the Ghuls will start coming from the ledge ABOVE you. So go up there and wait for them, you should be able to brand a good bunch of them.

I certainly prefer this solution more than restarting the whole DLC.

Hi all, this achievement took me a while to work out how to get, but in the end it was not that hard.

Further in on the DLC you'll come across a mission where you learn how to control Ghuls, follow the mission through and you'll have to fight a Graug. What i was doing wrong was letting the Ghuls kill the Graug and the achievement didn't pop, I then realised that you have to press cn_down to make the Ghuls explode.
So when you get to this bit stun the Graug with 2 arrows to the head and the Ghuls will start attacking it. When the health of the Graug is just over half press down to "Dispatch" the Ghuls and this will cause them to explode this should have then killed it, If not just press start and leave the mission and start again.
For those who have completed the story (like I had) start a new game under a different save slot and start lord of the hunt DLC.

Hope this helps someone!

EDIT

Honeycut1: You CAN unlock this in the overworld (if you've already completed the mission), but it's a bit of a pain in the butt.

well i tired my best, but i couldn't, i found that as soon as you hit the graug, caragors would come and mess it all up by either killing the ghuls or the graug or attacking you. plus i couldn't get enough ghuls to follow so i decided to play though again, it wont take long its a short dlc

duno iv not tried it yet, iv loaded it up tho , you have to kill 5 war chiefs 20 captains, then there is side objectives, complete it in 40 mins, kill 10 of the 25 with the beasts and one other but i can remember that one not sure if you have to do the side objective or just the main ones to qualify for the achievement

If you fail (you detonate your ghuls and it does not enough damage) let the graug kill you. (Do not press start and leave the mission! :) ) You can retry and start right before the fight! No need to play the whole mission again.

For some reason this achievement won't pop for me. I've dispatched ghuls and it killed the graug in the mission multiple times. At first I thought it was because I was redoing the graug portion of the mission instead of dispatching and killing him on the first try. I finally started the whole mission over again and did it the first try but no pop :(

Just a note. You can change to a new save slot at the main menu if you miss this in the story mission. I tried other solution in free roam but it was just too annoying. The hour it takes to go back through the first 4 war-chiefs is worth it.

I REALLY didn't want to do the DLC all over again, cause the first time I did it while goofing around and it took me like 8h (relax), but doing only the main quests it takes around an hour, the hardest part is to kill Ûgakûga, I was lucky, on my second try he just ran towards me all alone for no reason (after the Graug's death) while I was hidden where we launch the mission.
So if like me you need this achievement badly, don't worry, doing the DLC again is not that much work, except for the 20 Archers objective, that's really a pain in the arse.

Took a few goes but I got it. If the Graug dies and you don't get the achievement, just run out of the area and fail the mission. Then press A to retry the mission, it'll start you at the Graug fight with a full set of Ghuls!

Also I believe the Graug gets poisoned by Ghul vomit. So if it drops dead after you detonate the Ghuls then it's died from poison, not the detonation, so that may be why it's not unlocking for some people.

Waiting until just over half of the Graug's health was depleted didn't work for me. I would suggest you wait until he has about 30% of his health left, that did the trick for me.

Also easily combined with the "O Mother, Where Art Thou" achievement for having 20 branded Ghûls at one time.

to be honest every one was in the right place at the right time i was in the top right part of the map there was a caragor fighting with the graug so i mounted them both (they stop fighting then) then i just shot the bait hole and a ghul matron came out so i got my combo up using the graug and pressed cn_A + cn_Y by the ghul, sorry i cant help much more that's just how it happened for me

I too missed out on doing it during the first play so I had to repeat the DLC until I got to that mission again (even though I already completed the game once, currently I am playing the GOTY edition again)

anyway, you might wanna add to your description that you should dispatch all the ghuls as soon as they start attacking the graug. I waited 5 times until the graugs health was halfway down and the achievement never popped. when I clicked down right after the most ghuls jumped on the graug the explosion killed him and the achievement popped right away.

then again, I hardly doubt anyone is still playing the game anyway haha, just fyi

The easiest way to get this one is in the mission " Hypocritical Oath"

Near the end of the mission you will get hit with a final heard of ghuls. Once you complete the objective of getting 45 of them branded an Wretched Graug will appear. Hit him in the head with two fully charged arrows so they can attack him. Once he gets up his health should be half way or lower. Hit him again twice in the head to bring him down but this time press the down arrow on the D-pad to explode your Ghuls on him to finish him off.

To get this trophy, which is called "Ghuls Gone Wild", you will have to kill a Graug by dispatching your army of Ghuls on him.

First off, you won't be able to earn the ability to brand Ghuls until you get to the mission that's called "Hypocritical Oath." In my opinion, that's the best mission to get this trophy. Sure, it's possible to find a spot or two that has both a Ghul mound and Graug Bait nearby. Problem is that there are random monsters, such as Uruks and Caragaths, that will appear and kill them quickly, so I don't recommend that method.

Instead, play through the "Hypocritical Oath" mission. That mission, by the way, is unlocked once you have destroyed at least four out of the five warchiefs.

Begin the mission by branding your army of ghuls and getting as many as you can. You have at least two or three times to accomplish this. At the end of the mission, a Wretched Graug appears and challenges you and your army of ghuls. If you have a lot of them by your side, then it's a piece of cake.

When the fight starts, immediately put two Charged Shots from your bow and arrow into the Graug's head in order to stun him. Then let the Ghuls go on his body and start damaging him as quick as they can. If you don't have enough of an army and you only whittle him down for a bit, chances are that he'll regain his footing, which means you'll have to use two more Charged Shots on the Graug's head to stun him once again.

Once he is at low health and the Ghuls are on his body again, IMMEDIATELY hit cn_down on the directional pad and all of your Ghuls, including the ones that are on the beast, will explode and die. You do this correctly and the trophy unlocks.

For further information on how to do it correctly, I've attached a video guide with this solution I wrote. Credit goes to richard919 for the video. It's short, but it's to the point and shows you what you need to do at the very end for the trophy. Have fun and good luck!

This achievement is obtained at the end of the story mission entitled “Hypocritical Oath.” Towards the end of this mission, you will have already successfully dominated more than 45 Ghuls. After surviving the final swarm of Ghuls, a Wretched Graug will appear in the valley just ahead. At this time, Torvin will order you to kill the Graug with the dominated Ghuls.

To have the Ghuls successfully attack the Graug, you will need to shoot two fully charged Bow shots at the Wretched Graug’s head. This will stun the beast for some time, allowing the Ghuls to jump on the Graug’s head and attack the oversized creature. Continue to stun the Graug until the health bar above its head drops to about a third and when the Ghuls are on top of the Graug, hold down on the d-pad to dispatch your branded allies. This will automatically kill the Graug, thus unlocking the achievement.

While not technically missable, for your own sanity you really do not want to miss the very easy opportunity that occurs during the storyline mission: Hypocritical Oath. This is to the degree that I recommend backing up your game save data on a USB stick or in the cloud before playing this mission.

In free roam, it is possible to find a Ghûl mound near a Wretched Graug but you will probably need 2 mounds to get enough Ghûls to successfully kill the Wretched Graug. I'm not solid on a minimum number of Ghûls but you'll probably want 12-15 of them; with 6 I only took out half of its life. You just might pull your hair out trying to do this in free roam.

It should also be noted that you cannot attempt this trophy until you have begun Hypocritical Oath as this is the mission that unlocks your ability to perform a Branded Ghûl Dispatch. The Wretched Graug must be killed using this ability. If you let your branded Ghûls simply kill the Wretched Graug through melee and ranged damage, the trophy will not pop.

The trophy will pop immediately if you successfully kill a Wretched Graug through a Branded Ghûl Dispatch. The spoiler below is more specific on how to do this:
The following is what occurs in Hypocritical Oath and how you can achieve this trophy.
  • Your ability to Dominate (Brand) Ghûls is unlocked through a tutorial: press + when your Hit Streak is red and you will perform an Area of Effect brand (this only works on Ghûls).
  • The mission then requires you to go to three different areas to "recruit" Ghûls. The first two areas do not give you many Ghûls, but the third area has lots. In fact, the third area will keep spawning until you satisfy the sub-mission goal of 45. This does not mean 45 at the same time, but 45 individual successful brands overall.
  • Note: If you successfully reach 20 actively branded Ghûls at the same you will pop a different trophy. See O Mother, Where Art Thou?.
  • Once you reach the goal of 45, the mission spawns a Wretched Graug and then unlocks your ability to perform a Branded Ghûl Dispatch.
  • Hit him in the head with two fully charged arrows (Wretched Graug Stun)
  • Order your Ghûls to attack (you should have at least a dozen)
  • Once they are all over him, press to make them explode.
  • The trophy will pop immediately if the Wretched Graug dies in the explosion.
There is also a fail-safe that you can use in this mission. If the trophy does NOT pop and the Wretched Graug is still alive, immediately run out of the mission area. Keep running until you fail the mission and the game asks if you want to Retry. Press to Retry. The Wretched Graug will respawn and you will have 19 branded Ghûls to try again. You can keep repeating the cycle as long as the Wretched Graug is still alive.

The trophy is very easy to get in the quest where Torvin will offer us to learn how to subdue the ghouls, in this task you can get another trophy for subjugating 20 ghouls at once, to do this, fully charge Urfael’s sword and when you get to the 3rd point, do not kill the ghouls, but let them come to you as much as possible, after which turn on the Sword of Urfael and Press the buttons to subdue the ghouls, after which the Vile Graug will appear, shoot him 2 times in the head and order the ghulams to attack, do not blow up the ghouls right away!! It’s better to shoot the graug in the head a second time and again order the ghouls to attack after they climb on him and blow them up!

If you screwed up like me and forgot to make the trophy on time. So in order not to restart the whole “DLC plot”, I made a trophy in the upper left part of the map. You can summon a graug there, and there are ghouls hanging out there and there is a nest.
As the ghouls begin to spawn, I summoned the graug (it may also be that he will sit there in the cave) - I shot at the graug 5 times and then I branded the ghouls and baited the big man (I kill the acidic ones - they get in the way). When 5-7 animals are destroyed, about half of the life is demolished.

At first I missed this trophy because... the condition is not quite translated correctly. I waited until they stupidly ate him up and the trophy didn’t drop, but I definitely need to blow everyone up when the vile graug has few lives left. In other words, as soon as he has few lives left, we blow up all the ghouls with the button .

If you encounter problems, I advise you to upload your save to the cloud and try again.
