How to unlock the Master of the Wilds achievement in Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor - Definitive Guide
Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor Hunting Challenges
Hunting challenges reward Talion up to five-hundred Mirian and range from killing simple arthropods to fierce beasts. You will also unlock Master of the Wild and Thrill of the Hunt Achievement/Trophies for completing all Hunter Challenges.
Challenge #1 – Kill Three Ungol Spiders
Reward: 100 Mirian
These arthropods can be found in various areas like cave openings and strongholds, both in Uldun and Sea of Nurnen. Get to one of these areas and go into the Wraith World to find these creatures scuttling on the ground. Use any tool at your disposal to dispose them away.
Challenge #2 – Kill Five Flying Creatures
Reward: 105 Mirian
There is hardly any area where you will not find these creatures drifting through the winds or sitting on their perches on top of tall buildings and structures. Enter the Wraith World and use your Focus to pick these creatures with your bow.
Challenge #3 – Kill Three Caragors
Reward: 115 Mirian
These lion-wolf hybrid creatures are the real deal when it comes to Hunting Challenges. You will often find these creatures behind bars in different areas like strongholds.
I would recommend getting on an elevated platform and swarming these creatures with arrows. You can also go in for a head-on attack, but this requires you to continuously dodge their rapid attacks which are pretty difficult.
Challenge #4 – Kill Four Mordor Rats
Reward: 130 Mirian
These creatures are somewhat like Ungol Spiders when it comes to size. You can find these creatures in areas like strongholds and encampments.
You can enter Wraith World to find these creatures as blue dots scuttling around the mentioned areas. Use any weapon you want and kill four of them to complete this challenge.
Challenge #5 – Kill Eight Ghuls
Reward: 150 Mirian
I like to believe that you will complete this challenge by the time you will finish the main story. The reason for this is that you will encounter these creatures throughout the main storyline.
If not, travel to any of the locations in Mordor at night and you are sure to run into them. In addition to this, these creatures will also pop-up on your world-map at random occasions.
Challenge #6 – Kill Three Morgul Bats
Reward: 180 Mirian
It is not killing these creatures that make this challenge hard, but actually finding them. In order to find these creatures, you need to travel inside a cave and keep your eyes peeled on the walls.
Also make sure to enter the Wraith World and use your Focus to make your bow shots count. These creatures will fly away as soon as they sense you closing in or hear the sound of your bow.
Challenge #7 – Kill a Graug
Reward: 220 Mirian
You will automatically complete this challenge by completing main mission, Hunting Partners. For a quick summary of things, you need to enter the stealth mode and get behind the beast followed by bleeding it.
Once you have done that, stun the beast by shooting in its face and finally grab the stunned creature to dominate and kill it.
Challenge #8 – Kill a Dire Caragor
Reward: 270 Mirian
You will find these creatures in wilderness of Sea of Nurnen. Do make sure that you have Shadow Mount ability to mount these creatures followed by killing them.
Besides, you can also complete the Graug Challenge during the main mission, The Great White Graug and kill the Dire Caragor at your disposal.
Challenge #9 – Kill a Ghul Matron
Reward: 330 Mirian
These creatures are extremely hard to find! The best way to find these creatures is to find a group of Ghuls and start killing them. You need to continue killing them and eventually a Ghul Matron will emerge from the ground.
Ghul Matron are very vulnerable to fire attacks and ranged attacks. Make sure to stick to these attacks as these creatures have insanely strong counter attacks.
*For the Ghul Matron, it appears you do not want to kill them all. As you get closer to having all of them killed one or two will have an exclamation point appear over their heads. DO NOT KILL THESE GHULS! They will return to the ground and a few seconds later, another wave of ghuls will rise up. During the third or fourth wave, the Ghul Matron should appear.* thanks to DemonRagnarok13
Challenge #10 – Kill a Horned Graug
Reward: 500 Mirian
Graug can be found wandering about different areas of Sea of Nurnen; Harad Basin, Cab-Gwanth Bluff, and Cape of Nurn are a few of these. You can complete the Great White Graug mission to complete this challenge.
Alternatively, you can also unlock Shadow Mount ability and grab one of these creatures. Once you have done that, kill the creature and complete the challenge.
1) Kill 3 Spiders
These little things appear all over Mordor, though frequently near caves. Use your Wraith view to spot them easier. You can kill them in almost any fashion you can think of, including just stepping on them. Kill three however you like.
2) Kill 5 flying creatures
Much like the spiders, you'll find these all over. You can find bats frequently around caves and some other creatures frequently perching near strongholds. You'll have to shoot these out of the sky, so make sure that you have Focus when hunting them. Also keep in mind that when your aiming at them, your reticle will shrink a smidge as it goes over your target, indicating that you've lined up the shot.
3) Kill 3 Caragors
Early on, this might be a little bit tough. Caragors are all over the place, including in cages and roaming the wild. Later in the game, you'll acquire an ability that allows you to mount one instantly. At the point, you can simply kill it while mounted by holding R2 and hitting Circle (I believe).
However, because some of the later hunts are a little tougher to find, you'll want to kill these earlier. Just find Caragors near some Orcs and use the Orcs to help you kill it. Do this three times.
4) Kill 4 Rats
You'll tend to find these around strongholds and large camps. They'll scurry about low to the ground. They aren't generally difficult to find, but the proximity to Orcs means you usually have other things on your mind. Just stay hidden and keep your eyes peeled. You'll find them eventually
5) Kill 8 Ghuls
While not plentiful in most of the open areas of the world, they come out in droves in some areas. If you find one, remember where it is so you can return later in the game for this.
If you don't find any places, there's a pretty good one by the Forge Tower
6) Kill 3 Bats
You'll find bats by/in caves. Check out the caves and you'll eventually find some. Much as the previous "flying creatures" challenge, make sure you have Focus when you go hunting.
The two points I've had the most success with were in the Sea of Nurnen area (the second area). On the far right side, just north of the eastern Forge Tower in (Harad Basin) is a cave nestled in the cliffs from which you can zipline down. I've found some near the mouth of this cave.
There's also a cave on the far western side of the area that is useful. From the western most Forge Tower (Tirith Mesas), go north to the cave in Celon Poros. You should find a cave with a large horned Graug in it (you'll come back for him later). Sometimes you can find a huge swarm of them by the mouth of the cave.
7) Kill a Graug
You can kill any Graug for this. The aforementioned cave in the previous challenge works. You can also sometimes fine them spawning near Forge Towers, so you can hop from one to another to find them. I've had luck with the northwestern most Tower in the Sea of Nurnen (Cape of Nurn)
This can also be done by partaking in the main story. There will be a set of missions involving a dwarf named Torvin. During one of the missions, you'll take down a Graug.
8) Kill a Dire Caragor
The easiest way to do this is the final story mission with Torvin. After you kill your first Graug with Torvin, you'll set off to kill a horned Graug. After this mission is complete, you'll find yourself already riding a Dire Caragor.
If that option isn't available, head to the Sea of Nurnen after it becomes available through the story. Find a Caragor and just ride around the area until you come across a Caragor with a health bar. More than likely, you'll see the health bar before you ever see the Caragor. Once you find it, kill it however you like.
9) Kill a Ghul Matron
This is regarded by some to be the toughest to find. It really isn't. By the southern most Forge Tower in the Udun (Udun Crossing) is a great place to get this. There's a small pass SE of the tower. Jump down and start going through the pass (at night) to be attacked by Ghuls. Kill one or two, but leave some alive. Eventually, they'll begin to run away while showing the "about to sound the alarm" flash above their heads.
When this happens, let them go. They'll run away, dig into the ground. It might seem like something went wrong but after a few moments of quiet, more Ghuls will come. Kill them slowly so that each group might send more Ghuls to raise more alarms. Keep killing and letting Ghuls go until eventually a Matron appears.
When the Matron appears, kill her. She's a pretty able fighter so you might want to just shoot her with charge shots. Otherwise you have to jump over her, hit her twice, and jump over her again.
10) Kill a Horned Graug
You may be able to find these wandering around in the Sea of Nurnen, but you can also find one frequently in the cave in the in Celon Poros. There's not much in the cave. If you don't find it, leave, advance time, fast travel back to Udun, maybe run some side missions, then return.
Otherwise, grab a Caragor and ride around the Sea of Nurnen until you find one.
That should help you get all 10. Unfortuntely, some of these are very dependent on a measure of luck, and there isn't any way to over come that. If you keep an eye out while doing other things, however, you can cut down the amount of time needed for this considerably.
the guide of Drorelith is superb, but still I had some problems finding the locations. That's why I used the video below. The video contains locations of all the hunting challenges in chronological order.
So this solution is meant as a visual support to the excellent guide of Drorelith :-)
I hope this helps you guys :-)
Any improvements? Please let me know in the comments!
Hunting Challenges are never clearly presented via an icon on the world map, however when the world map is open, you will notice these challenges on the left side of the screen. Here, your progress towards your current Hunting Challenge will be displayed, which is a great way to stay updated on your progress for this achievement.
These challenges revolve around hunting down and slaying the various different types of creatures and beasts around Mordor. Such creatures include spiders, birds, caragors, and bats. Overall, there are only ten Hunting Challenges and once they have all been successfully completed, this achievement will finally unlock.
For a visual aid in locating certain spawn locations for the different creatures and beasts of each challenge, don't hesitate in using the video guide below!
The 10 Hunting Challenges and their walkthroughs are as follows:
Hunting 1
Kill 3 Spiders
You can find spiders in many caves throughout the game. They are very tiny, crawl along the ground, and blend in quite well with the environment. To locate them you should either go in to Wraith Mode () until you stumble upon some. Then use + to focus them down.
There are 3 spiders in the cave to the East of The Black Road Forge Tower. Head east and then take your first right from the tower until you reach the cave. The spiders will be inside.
Hunting 2
Kill 5 Flying Creatures
Just southwest of the Udon Crossing Forge Tower there is a cave. It is right below the “Nameless Things” sword mission. At the mouth of the cave are roughly a dozen bats. They only take one quick arrow to kill them, so there’s no need to charge it. Pick off five to complete the challenge.
If you are unable to kill all 5 before they fly away, simply go back to the Forge Tower or Advance Time and return to finish the challenge.
Hunting 3
Kill 3 Caragors
The easiest place to get the three kills very early on is just to the southwest of the Udun Foothills Forge Tower. Jump off the left side of the tower and head straight across the bridge. At the end of it you will find a cage among some ruins.
Jump on top of the cage and shoot it with + to release the Caragor, then immediately jump on its back using . Beat the mini-game and tame it and proceed to kill it by pressing +.
After it dies, you can either fast travel to back to the Udun Foothills tower or advance time. It should respawn immediately, but if it doesn’t, simply fast travel/advance again until you have your kills.
Hunting 4
Kill 4 Rats
Rats are most frequently found in dark, dirty, and muddy areas. There are an abundance of them in the East Garrison Stronghold and virtually all Eastern Strongholds in Udun. They can also be found spread throughout the Black Gate and a myriad of other areas.
Two spawn directly underneath the “Deathly Whisper” Dagger Mission in the East Garrison that can be easily farmed. Simply fail the mission by leaving the area, restart it and kill the rats again.
Hunting 5
Kill 5 Ghuls
This challenge will not become available until you complete the main story mission “Shattered Memories”. At the end of the mission you will awaken from the cutscene to discover that Ghuls are ambushing you. You will also have gained a new ability called “Wraith Flash” which is activated by pressing +.
If you have already completed the previous 4 hunting missions you will immediately begin this one. Simply kill the 5 Ghuls while clearing the mission to complete this. If you have already completed the mission and are just now reaching Hunting 5, please refer to Hunting 9 for the best Ghul location.
Hunting 6
Kill 3 Bats
Just southwest of the Udon Crossing Forge Tower there is a cave. It is right below the “Nameless Things” sword mission. At the mouth of the cave are roughly a dozen bats. They only take one quick arrow to kill them, so there’s no need to charge it. Pick off five to complete the challenge.
If you are unable to kill all 5 before they fly away, simply go back to the Forge Tower or Advance Time and return to finish the challenge.
Hunting 7
Kill 1 Graug
Graugs are gigantic troll-like enemies that wreak havoc on everything. They always have a red claw symbol over their head whenever they are within range, which can help you find them. They are really formidable until you gain the ability to mount and bleed them in the main story mission “Hunting Partners”.
At the end of the mission you will be told to kill your Graug mount by pressing +, which will instantly slay the Graug. Although it’s very possible to kill a Graug prior to this, it will take exceptionally long and be very dangerous. You can take one down with the assistance of numerous Caragors and Uruk but if they get the finishing blow it won’t count for the challenge.
If you are already beyond the “Hunting Partners” mission you can always fast travel back to the Tirith Mesas Forge Tower in the far west of Nurn. Just to the northwest of it is a cave that often has Graug in or around it. Keep fast traveling back until it appears.
Hunting 8
Kill 1 Dire Caragor
A Dire Caragor is the strongest type of Caragor. It has a whiter hue and are far more rare than the normal variant. They don’t appear until you reach Nurn and can be most commonly found outside the northern cave in Tirith Mesas, or wandering nearby. Keep fast traveling back until one appears.
The best way to kill one is to mount it, tame it, then use + to finish it off in one blow.
Hunting 9
Kill 1 Ghul Matron
Ghul Matrons are the larger, white, spiked variants of the regular Ghuls. They spit poison and take a lot more effort to kill just like the Dire Caragor. Unlike the other enemies in the game, Ghuls only spawn during the night, so you must Advance Time at a tower until it is dark outside. Luckily you can get them to spawn endlessly once you find a spawn point so the Matron will eventually spawn. Just kill with regular attacks and never use Wraith Flash until it shows itself.
The way you keep them spawning is to let the fleeing Ghuls, with the red alarm symbol, run back into the ground. More Ghuls will continue to spawn until the Matron inevitably appears.
A great location to farm them is in the far western corner of Udun outside the Durthang Wastes cave. If they don’t appear just fast travel back to the nearby tower and run back until you find them.
Hunting 10
Kill 1 Horned Graug
Horned Graugs are similar to Dire Caragors in the sense that they are simply a stronger version of the former. They are almost indistinguishable from a regular Graug except for some additional horns/spikes covering their body.
You will encounter one during the final quest in Torvin's chain, "The Great White Graug", so being on this step upon reaching the quest will knock out two birds with one stone (credit to Mastadon for clarifying that it counts towards the Hunting 10 quest as well). However, if you are past that specific quest, the best way to find one is to fast travel to Tirith Mesas Forge Tower in the far west of Nurn. Just to the northwest of it is a cave that often has Graug in or around it. Keep fast traveling back until it appears.
