How to unlock the Rough Rider achievement in Middle-earth: Shadow of War - Definitive Guide
1. Caragor - unlocked using the Call Mount skill.
2. Dire Caragor - unlocked using the Dire Caragor skill upgrade.
3. Graug - unlocked using the Graug Call skill upgrade; level 30 required.
4. Drake - unlocked using Dragon Song skill upgrade awarded for completing the Carnan quests.
5. Poison Graug (Elemental) - Nurnen - Available near the middle fast travel point. Keep advancing time until it spawns nearby and them break and dominate it.
6. Fire Graug (Elemental) - Gorgoroth - Available near the cave/tunnels near the left middle. Keep advancing time until it spawns nearby and them break and dominate it.
7. Ice Graug (Elemental) - Seregost - Available near the ice lake caves on the left of the map. Keep advancing time until it spawns nearby and them break and dominate it.
After finishing shadow wars, few Nazgul masks are added to inventory. One of them is "Mask of the Fell Rider" (summon elemental Graug). Just equip it and use "call Graug" skill. Mount summoned Graug and achievement will pop up.
For poison summon it at Nurnen, fire at Gorgoroth and ice at Seregost.
Basically all mounts needed for achievement can be summoned by player.
To unlock this achievement you need to ride every type of beast and rare beast. Initially you will need to attack and hurt beasts to break them so that you can mount and ride them, however every beast can be summoned if you have the required skills if you can wait until the end of the game. You will ultimately need the following skills in the mounted category;
- Caragor Rider
- Graug Rider
- Call Mount and it's upgrades 'Dire Caragor', 'Graug Call' and 'Dragon Song'
- Dragon Rider
Dragon Song is unlocked after completing all of the Carnan quests while all the others must be unlocked by purchasing them with skill points. Once you have all of these skills apply Call mount without any upgrades and then summon the caragor. Mount and ride it around for a few seconds, then kill it and go into you skills and apply the Dire Caragor upgrade, then summon this and mount it. Repeat this with the Graug Call and Dragon Song upgrades for the Graug and Drake mounts.
Now you're going to want to summon the Graug 3 more times but you need to travel to certain regions so that the elemental version spawns. Travel to Gorgoroth and summon a Graug to get a Fire Graug, then travel to Seregost and summon a Graug to get a frost Graug and finally travel to Nurnen and summon a Graug to get a Poison Graug.
There are some missions where you have to ride certain beasts including the Drake and at least two of the three elemental Graugs but if you haven't unlocked this achievement by the end of the game summon the beasts you need to unlock the achievement.
There are a total of 7 beasts you need to ride for this trophy. 4 of the 7 can be summoned when you have the appropriate 'Call Mount' skills, the 3 you probably won't encounter naturally are the rare elemental Graugs, though 2 of them can be easily found in side quests.
List of beats:
- Caragor - Found commonly in the game, can be summoned with 'Call Mount'.
- Dire Caragor - Rarely found, can be summoned with Call Mount upgrade 'Dire Caragor'.
- Graug - Found fairly commonly, sometimes caged in outposts, can be summoned with Call Mount upgrade 'Graug Call'.
- Drake - Rarely found, can be summoned with Call Mount upgrade 'Dragon Song' (after finishing all Carnan quests).
- Poison Graug - These are green coloured and are rarely found in Nurnen. If you fast travel between the 3 Haedir Towers until you see 2 Graugs fighting each other below, there is a chance one of them will be a green poison graug. They can also appear in the forest area.
- Fire Graug - These are red/orange coloured and are rarely found in Gorgoroth. The Shadows of the Past quest 'Bellas' has you riding on one at the start. See video below for the specific location in the game world (5:02) as it's difficult to describe in text.
- Ice Graug - These are blue coloured and are rarely found in Seregost. 'The Scourge' quest also has Ice Graugs once Helm breaches your fort so you can just dominate one of these. See video below for the specific location in the game world (6:56) as it's difficult to describe in text.
See below video from PowerPyx for the specific locations of each beast:
- Three simple beasts can be summoned if you have the appropriate skills. But they just come across, especially if you shoot at traps.
- “Snowy” caragor is found. Not often, but it seems to be everywhere. It has a lighter color. Even in the plot it occurs from time to time.
- Three elemental graugs are found - each in its own region. Snowy in cold weather, fiery in a region with a lot of lava. And the poisonous one - as if not in Nurnen, I don’t remember exactly.
I didn’t even get to the mask, I just knocked it out, raising orcs and remembering that if I saw an elemental graug, saddle up, it will be more convenient to deal with the crowds.
